View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.
Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:

Ubuntu 9.10. System has been running fine for months. Today, tried to run Synaptic and get the following error: 'Failed to run /usr/bin/synaptic as root - unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file' Where invoking synaptic used to ask me for my password, it now gives the above error message. What I did today was change grub so that I boot to the command line instead of the gui. That worked fine and I can invoke the gui with startx as a normal user. sudo apt-get works OK from the command line.

Whenever I try to install any new software using package manager, software center or apt-get, it gets stuck at Downloading for almost a minute and then the download starts. No problems with the net connections-a high speed connection to backbone through a firewall. It occurs even while updating the package repos.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAnyone know what it's listed under?9.10 Karmic Koala..I'm customising all my preferred aps and use the amazing VLC for videos, I don't want 'Movie Player' there, but I can't find it in Synaptic to delete it and want it gone, not just the shortcut deleted.
Whilst discussing preferred aps, I can also highly recommend ditching Firefox and Evolution for Opera; more features, faster browsing, handles plugin videos better (no greying out), has a built in mail client so everything's in one place, etc. Tried just about every other browser, always go back to Opera.
Is it possible to install a local .deb package with synaptic package manager? I managed to trash network-manager-gnome removing it by mistake instead of a package with a similar name..... oops. So now have no network connections. I downloaded the following file network-manager-gnome_0.8~a~git.20091014t134532.4033e62-0ubuntu1_i386.deb via a computer with a net connection. and now have it on a usb key. Can I point the synaptic package manager to the local package and install like that, or do I have to do it via the console. I also have my original Karmic 9.10 disk, which I imagine has the package on as well. Is there a way to add it via the system installer?

I am a relatively new user of Ubuntu and I have a question about Django 1.2 (and now we're up to 1.2.1). I currently have Django 1.1.1 installed via Synaptic.
-Generally, how long would it take for 1.2.1 to appear in a package that I can download via Synaptic?
-If I were to uninstall ver 1.1.1 and manually install ver 1.2.1, would it get installed in the same location that Synaptic installs it?
I recently installed the KDE and xface desktops out of curiosity but now I'm left with a massive amount of extra Apps, some that I want and some I don't. When I try marking some to remove in Synaptic, it comes up with a bunch of others that will be marked. Is it possible to remove them just one by one with out any extras being marked for removal as well?

I'm having all kind of problems with my ubuntu 10.04 which I updated to from the 9.10. I'm doing a clean install so I'd like to have this very clear. Right now I have three users:
1-the administrator
2-the one I use for music production
3-a general one.
The only one in which I can access synaptic is user 1. My question is: is there a way I can access to synaptic from the other users? I thought that you picked an admin password and if you were on a non admin account, by typing it you could use synaptic.
With Synaptic I can not "Mark for Removal". In terminal I tried "sudo synaptic", "gksudo synaptic", it doesn't work. What is wrong?
