Mac OS X has it in the form of Cmd+, and KDE also has it, although I dont remember what the default is for that. Does our beloved GNOME have it? It would be so rat if it does, or if it is possibly to enable.

So the key keyboard shortcut is:
CTRL+ALT+TAB
With it you change the focus from the desktop to the panel, and vice versa When the focus in in the panel you can move from icon to icon with TAB (to the right) or SHIFT+TAB (to the left). Then Enter key (sometimes F10 instead) makes the same as left-clicking with the mouse, and SHIFT+F10 makes the same as right-clicking with the mouse. ESC key (sometimes Enter instead) takes the menus out.

I have a maverick box plugged into two monitors, using the open source radeon driver and randr. Each monitor has a top and bottom gnome panel, with various widgets in each. There is no /etc/xorg.conf. The Problem: If I 1) remove both monitors to plug the box into my HDTV, or 2) connect to the X server remotely from a laptop, the panels all get shoved onto the one display. Do you have any advice on how I might specify different gnome panel 'profiles' for the different uses of this computer?

However, I'm looking to remove the top panel and have only the bottom panel like I have set up on my machine. The gconf settings seem to be pretty complex and I'm not sure which keys I should be changing to remove the top panel and include the settings I have currently for the bottom panel (e.g. Menu Bar | Shortcuts | Window List | Notification Area | Clock)
I installed avant-window-navigator and followed these instructions to remove gnome-panel from startup: URL...However I have since uninstalled AWN and now cannot get gnome-panel to load at startup.I think I have put my settings back where they should be -- looking at them in gconf-editor:
1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]
2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"
Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.
Is it possible to delete a panel and move the remaining one in the Fallback Gnome 2-style mode? When I tried it everything seemed locked down.

When I closed Rhythmbox, a bunch of little musical notes appeared in the top panel; see pic: Notice the little musical notes on the top panel. Also, whenever I click on Applications, Places, or System; it opens a song.

If I:
1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.

I'm new to Linux. I'm running openSUSE 11.3 with both the Gnome and KDE desktops installed, but so far I'm only using Gnome. I was looking for a way to assign sound volume increase/decrease to some keyboard keys instead of having to click on the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. I found what I included in the Title of this message. Under the Global Keyboard Shortcuts was an item for each increase and decrease sound volume. These were set to (I believe) meta+ and meta-, respectively.
I changed them to F12 and F11, respectively (to match my Apple keyboard). After the changes, I started a game which takes over the entire screen (which is why I wanted to assign the volume to keys in the first place) to see if the changes worked. They did not! So, I tried to go back and change them to something else and now I can't even access Global Keyboard Shortcuts at all. I keep getting the following error:

I installed Slackware 13.37 current 32 bit (kernel 2.6.38.7-smp) last saturday and almost everything works fine. I don't understand why I cannot use Ctrl-Ins and Shift-Ins shortcuts for copy and paste in console terminal. Shortcuts works fine in X terminal (fluxbox) Konsole... but they don't in text console.

If it's done at the command line, that would be just fine. I'm very familiar with working at the command line.
Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior
View 3 Replies View Relatedyesterday I was moving some launchers in the menu editor, going a bit too fast, and I accidentally hit delete on the "Internet" menu. In an attempt to get it back, I deleted ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.gconf/apps/panel, assuming they'd be automatically replaced. I ran the updater today and it updated gnome-panel, so I $ killall gnome-panel 'd just in case, and once again nothing. I have all the custom launchers from ~/.local/share/applications saved onto my desktop, but right now I need all the original launchers back. I don't even have the software management launcher! It just shows me a little tiny black stripe because it's completely empty. BTW, I'm running Lucid 64.

I have recently installed Kubuntu Maverick on my netbook and have decided that I now like KDE again The one bit of functionality that I am missing is the keyboard short cuts of Gnome-Do. So if I type Windows key Em, return and Emacs launches.
The search box in Kubuntu sort of does this. However, I have to click in the box and when I have typed the first few characters I have to click on the icon with the mouse. Is there any way I can do this just using the keyboard and not the mouse? I have searched the help and Googled without much success.
I installed gnome-do to see what it was like (useless - doesn't work properly with Unity as far as I can tell). After trying it out for a while I noticed that my browser and email keyboard shortcuts didn't work anymore. I have a Microsoft Ergo 4000 keyboard with dedicated browser and email buttons that I always used to start Firefox and Thunderbird. Now the browser button starts the browser, but instead of starting my home page it attempts to load a non-url number. All settings, like keyboard shortcuts, software preferences and in the browser are still set correctly, but it doesn't work anymore.The email button doesn't do anything anymore.Once again, all settings like keyboard shortcuts and software preferences are still correct, but the button no longer works.

View 5 Replies View RelatedKarmic there was a tab inside "System->Preferences->Appearance" called "Interface" which allowed me to modify the keyboard shortcuts. I had <Backspace> to move backwards in Nautilis and <Shift><Backspace> to move forward.
Without this tab can anyone tell me how I can modify the shortcuts to do this? I have spent some time looking at gconf-editor but nothing is jumping out at me, particularly with regards to the back and forward browsing.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, but wanted to use Banshee instead of Rhythmbox. After running Code: sudo aptitude install banshee I wanted to bind my "Media" button on my keyboard to run banshee; unfortunately, it still wants to run rhythmbox. Where can I change the default command executed by these keyboard shortcuts? I can't seem to find them in gconf-editor under apps/metacity/* and googling has proved fruitless in finding where this configuration file is located.

Update: I deleted the ~/local/share/gnome-do folder and still no success
I don't know when this started happening, but my shortcuts such as Super+D to minimize all and go to the desktop and Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal, etc, have stopped working.
Other shortcuts, such as Alt+F1 and Alt+F2 work correctly, as well as the compiz ones.
I've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.
PD: My grafic card is a Matrox G550.
