Ubuntu :: Getting A RDP Connection To Machine At Work
Feb 2, 2011
Windows (XP and 7 at least) come with a RPD (remote desktop) software already installed.Can I connect to that somehow?I though that NOMACHINE was the answer, but I think that it requires an independent server app to be on the remote machine. I just want to be able to use the one already there if possible.
I CAN run my virtual XP box inside my Ubuntu, connect via work's VPN and then use its Remote desktop app, but I'd rather go though Ubuntu instead if possible.My machine is a Ubuntu 9.10 x64 box. Not sure what other information is you need, so feel free to ask.

I have a really weird one. This may be a putty issue, or it may be a config issue in Ubuntu. I've no idea who to blame. I have four machines involved in my little issue that has me scratching my head on where to even BEGIN to diagnose what is going on. The computer I'm attempting to connect to (For identification purposes, I'll call it the main machine) is running a relatively new install of KUbuntu 10.04, stock install of openssh daemon. ufw is disabled, firewalls are off, etc, and I can prove that later.
The machine acting odd is a Win XP 32 bit running Putty. Haven't had a problem until this reload of the previously mentioned machine. A Work machine that is running RedHad of some flavour. A Virtual Machine running a headless setup of Ubunto 8.04. Now that the introductions are over, here is a quick map of the machines that can successfully connect with. My major problem is that I cannot get SSH (And ONLY SSH) to work between the XP machine and the main machine.
Work -> Main = Works
Work -> VM = Works
XP -> VM = Works
XP -> Main = Fails
XP -> VM -> Main = Works
Main -> Main = Works (IE: "ssh localhost")
VM -> Main = Works
When I try to get the XP machine to connect to the Main machine, I get an error with Putty saying:
"Server sent disconnect message
type 2(protocol error):
baad service request ssh-connection"
I've changed Putty to try using SSH Protocol 1 only, but it says the protocol isn't installed on the Main machine, which is true. I've tried setting just 1, and it gives me the error, and I've tried setting it to "2 only" and it again comes up with the error. I went into /var/log as root on the Main machine, and did a "tail -n0 -f *" and then tried to connect, but nothing relevant shows up.
As for the proof that the firewall is disabled, three of the machines are working with Synergy, I am able to swap between all three of the machines without a problem, I can get to WebAdmin from the XP machine to the Main machine, and I can open a Samba share from the XP machine to the Main machine without a problem. This sounds like a protocol issue, but I can't see anything in WebAdmin that'll put me in the right direction.

I have a number of Ubuntu machines running. Our NAS is FreeNAS. I am typing this on an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop that is successfully connects to an NFS share on the FreeNAS box every day. In addition, we have 3 10.04 server machines that also stay connected to the share successfully, Yesterday, I installed a new 10.04 server machine using IP 192.168.0.11. Everything works except connecting to the NFS share. It always returns with: mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.0.13:/mnt/amrd0s2/public-NFS' failed: timed out, giving up
Here's what I have checked: I can ping 192.168.0.13 (obviously) The NFS export mask is set to 192.168.0.0/16. The other machines are all on the same subnet as this problem machine (192.168.0.*) nfs-common, nfs-client, and portmap are all installed and running correctly. portmap is running correctly showmount -e 192.168.0.13 give the proper response:
Export list for 192.168.0.13: /mnt/amrd0s2/public-NFS/ 192.168.0.0 iptables isn't even installed (these machines are segregated in a private network behind a hardware fire all) There is nothing related to NFS is any of the syslogs. dmesg has one entry: [6.025966] FS-Cache: Netfs 'nfs' registered for caching which is insignificant. how to at least debug the nfs-client short of downloading the source and actually stepping through the code.

I want to share my internet connection with my netbook which has a Win 7 starter OS. This is what I did: in Network Connections I set the IPv4 Setting of my network card to shared with other computers, plugged in the network cable into both machines, and now they both see a connection. Win 7 only sees the connection as Unidentified network with "No internet access". What should I do?

I have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:
eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 001:aa0:91:a7:51
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets: 0 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0
collisons: 0 txqueulen: 1000
RX bytes: 0 (0.0 B) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 B)
[Code]...
If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.

During set-up of a home server (running Kubuntu 10.04), I created an admin user for performing administrative tasks that may require an unmounted home. This user has a home directory on the root partition of the box. The machine has an internet-facing SSH server, and I have restricted the set of users that can connect via SSH, but I would like to restrict it further by making admin only accessible from my laptop (or perhaps only from the local 192.168.1.0/24 range). I currently run Win 7 and want to upgrade my computer to a server to accomplish the following... I have a VPN Service. I want the server machine to connect to a VPN providing a secure connection. Then, I want all the machines in the house (windows based) to connect through the server onto the VPN connection. Hopefully this makes sense. Would it be better to stick to Windows Server 2008 or switch to Ubuntu?

I have a Fedora machine that was installed with Linux LVM. I took the drive of that machine, connect it to disk enclosure, and connect to another Linux machine via USB connection. I can see that the drive /dev/sda is there:
Code:
[root@dd ~]# /sbin/fdisk -l
Disk /dev/hda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes .....
I want to copy files from this drive. I try to mount it, but it didn't work. The /dev/sda1 is mounted fine, but it has only boot stuff.
Code:
[root@dd ~]# mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/drive
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
How I can mount the drive and copy my files from this drive.

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition on Virtual Box. When I start the virtual machine I do not have connection to my home network. The router I have does not assign any IP address to this machine. Now I have some questions which I am finding hard to find answers for over the internet and other forums.
If I do have a network interface (I checked this using ifconfig -a) then is there a command to actually make the operating system connect to that network (something like repair on windows)?? Also what is the difference between a network interface with alias eth0 and eth5? I know that when it was eth0 the virtual machine used to connect to the network automatically. Now that it is eth5 it does not! I do not know however if this is related.

I have a network of 100 machines, all with ubuntu Linux. Is there a limit to the number of machines that can connect to one single machine (at the same time)? For example, can I have 99 of my machines maintain continuous ssh connection to the 100th machine? Can I have every one of my machines (every one of the 100) maintain a continuous ssh connection to all other 99 machines? How much memory does each such a connection take?

I got a Ubuntu machine running a local web server. It is connected to an archaic 10mbit hub, and I'd like a little bit faster network. I got a new 100/1000mbit switch connected to my router. I have 3 other PC's running off it, no problems at all. No configuration was necessary, and all existing cables worked fine.
Since the router and hub are located at the opposite end of the house, and the switch is in my PC room, I made up a new cable to connect it to my Ubuntu machine. It's just a straight-through cable, just like the other cables connecting the switch to other PC's. Okay so, when I plug the cable in to the machine I get no ethernet lights on either the machine nor the switch. But here's the kicker: I plug the cable into my laptop (running Windows 7), and it works perfectly. I restart the machine with the cable in, and get a green light. As soon as Ubuntu loads up, no lights, no connectivity. It shouldn't matter, but I'm running a static IP on the machine. I also have static IP's on the other PC's connected to the switch and nothing had to be changed.

New subversion user here. I've run into a nasty problem. It seems that nautilus chokes any time it tries to display a directory containing .svn files. There seems to be some sort of timeout involved per object under version control. The larger the directory, the longer it takes to display. I'm talking minutes here for a fairly ordinary sized directory.
Now I know that nautilus is painfully slow even at the best of times, but this is just ridiculous. These delays are crippling. I have no problem with nautilus and svn files on my work machine, which has centos. So it looks to me like something is misconfigured somewhere. And it is something specific to .svn files.

I have a bunch of old machines that a Client has asked us to convert into Citrix terminals. We installed Ubuntu 10 and Citrix Receiver on them, but about 5 of them are connected to new widescreen LCD's and they boot into console mode (older monitors are fine). If we unplug the cable during the boot process and then plug it in, the monitor works fine. It's only when it's auto-detected during boot that it will not load the GUI. I believe it's an old TNT64 chipset.

When the machine name is used to ping itself it will resolve and the ping completes. When the machine name of other computers on the LAN are used they don't resolve. You have to put in the raw IP numbers (192.168.1.x). I have a router at 192.168.1.1 that seems to be configured fine. It uses the MAC address of one of the machines (cloned in) to keep the cable modem happy. Everything else works fine on the network, it's just that I can't use the names. The router sees those names, btw, and lists them as "attached devices".

I have some strange problem with dns resolving. I am working on computer and suddenly, out of nowhere dns resolving stops to work on my machine. Sometimes networking restart solves problem, sometimes not. It happens randomly two-three times in a week, and at random time. Network in virtual machine on same computer works perfectly even if dns resolving stops on host.
I have tried everything but I can't find what causes it. How can I troubleshoot to find out what causes problem? Ten minutes ago it happened again and I have solved problem with networking restart.

- eth0 is connected to a 'Green" interface of a smoothwall router.
- eth1 is connected to a 'Orange' interface of the same smoothwall router.
The smoothwall router is setup to forward port 80 to the address of the eth1. I can ping eth1 from the smoothwall router so there is that connection.I have a web server running on port 80 and I have opened port 80 in the firewall and made eth1 a trusted interface.In this configuration, when accessing the outside world all the traffic goes through eth0 and DNS is snappy and faster. The problem is that anyone outside can not access the web server with a timeout error.If I disable eth0 and set DNS info on eth1( DNS servers are the QWest IPs ), people can access the web server, but DNS is very poor often taking more than a minute for a look up.Is there any way to get the two interfaces to work together?

Today I finally could install Fedora 15 i686 in my now aging (2005) desktop computer (although I will always think of it as my "new machine", as long as I don't assemble a new one for me):
AMD Sempron 3100+ (1.8GHz)
1GB DDR400
120GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 (128MB)
After I installed F15 my initialpression was that it worked really good on that hardware: everything went fine with GNOME 3 for example,except for some lags in graphics rendering, which I thought would be solved after the graphics card's full power were unleashed with the proprietary NVIDIA driver.For starters I am not sure which Nvidia driver is right for my card (Nvidia 173.X or the regularvidia).I managed to get "working" the 173.X driver but the desktop is even less responsive to begin with, and there appears to be a lot of activity on the hard disk side.So, my question is, which could be causing the performance loss?
A. The "small" RAM.
B. The vintage graphics card.
C. Some problem in the hard drive.
D. A known bug.

(are there ram requirements that could cause such a thing?). It currently has windows xp (and probably loads of viruses).
