I am using debian testing on my office pc, but i need to access it's desktop from time to time. So i need No machine/teamviewer software that can provide me with possibility to interact my desktop. The problem is, that i want to run shadowed session type, because teamviewer is not good for me. So, when i run no machine in shadowed mode, it crashes with message "The connection with remote server was shut down, please check your network settings and try again." The log is here:

I recently purchased a linux VPS from [URL] just to learn and play around with. I currently ssh into the machine via Putty from various Windows boxes. Is there anyway to throw some mp3s on the remote server and then have them play locally? Server is currently running Ubuntu Server 10.04.1.

Where is a good tutorial on how to set this up?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server.So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

I ran an apt-get install php-pear command and everything went smoothly, but now i cannot access the website as it says 'can't establish a connection to the server' and in firebug, it shows the status 'aborted'. I even tried adding the pear path in php.ini file and restarting the apache server but no luck.

I want the server machine to connect to a VPN providing a secure connection. Then, I want all the machines in the house (windows based) to connect through the server onto the VPN connection. Hopefully this makes sense. Would it be better to stick to Windows Server 2008 or switch to Ubuntu?

How do you transfer a file from a local Mac to a remote Linux machine
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Ubuntu server hosted on Amazon EC2. I need to create an automated backup scheme so I created another Ubuntu instance on my local network which is hosted in a virtual environment. I managed to transfer the necessary files between 2 machines on the same network using the rsync command:
rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/path/folder1/ remoteuser@remotehost.remotedomain:/home/path/folder2
How can I do the same thing but transferring files from my Amazon server to my local server? Is there a way I can achieve this with port forwarding, or by VPN, or anything else? It doesn't have to be rsync. If you know about a better method, kindly let me know.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor the life of me I can not figure out what I am doing wrong with scp to copy a directory and its contents from a remote machine to my local host. I have no issues with getting a single file but would like to just save time and get the whole folder in one command.
Here is what I have tried:
scp user AT remoteMachine:/home/username/folderIwant user AT localMachine:/folderIwant this gives me a permission denied error and try again and received disconnect from localHost to many authentication failures
scp user AT remoteMachine:home/username/folderIwant . says can not find file or folder
I am sure this is something easy that I cant remember, and searches gives me local to remote not remote to local and trying to make the local to remote suggestions I read to work remote to local have not worked.

I have had a look at the the information on the ubuntu forum about this but am having trouble getting the server to do what i want it to do.
I have a VPS running ubuntu 9.10 and i am trying to set it up to redirect port 25 to a remote machine via a VPN connection (remote machine connected via VPN)
i have tried setting this up in the firewall using webmin but it is not working.
I have recently installed fedora 14 and configured vpn to access my work network. I need to access some windows machines which although I can ping I cannot remote desktop into. When I go to Applications>Internet> Remote Desktop Viewer and put in the machine name (either just the machine name or the FQDN including the domain name) I get an error "Connection to <machinename> was closed".
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there any software that will do full mirroring between a local and a remote file system. I have a server (9.04) and a laptop (9.10). Each user has shared a shared directory on the server, and on the laptop. Updates to files may be done on either system. I want to keep both copies syncronised. Currently I use a script based on rsync (scheduled by cron) to keep the local and remote copies in sync.
The problem with this approach is that rsync only seems to be able to handle deletion of files if one file system is the master, which is not the case in my set-up. If I move a file to a different directory, rsync will reinstate the old file as well as copying the new one. I was hoping there was some software that could do proper mirroring between the 2 systems, but6 so far I cannot find anything.

I set up a print server with a USB printer attached. I can remotely bring up CUPS and print a test page, but I would like to be able to add a printer in windows like I normally would. Add printer, network work printer and so on, but I am not sure how to implement this on Ubuntu server. Do I need to use IPP or do I have to share it out using Samba? Oh, my server does not have a graphical desktop, it is strictly console based.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe issue is that my CentOS workstation is in a vlan from where the Intranet's DNS servers are unreachable. For browsing the web there is an ISA proxy server, which I presume resolves DNS for my firefox. However, wget, host, ping and aria2c fail to get any sort of DNS resolution since they're being run from command line.I have exported HTTP_PROXY value, which provides me internet access on console, but,only when I connect using IP address. It fails on name resolution.
My question is:May I redirect the DNS queries to my home PC which would be running a DNS server on a non standard port?I was thinking of putting nameserver 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf and then put iptables rule to redirect 127.0.0.1:53 UDP to a.public.ip.address:3535 UDP..I don't know if I am shooting blanks or what, I am not very much aware of this kind of setup.My main need is to provide DNS resolution to console apps.I want to utilize my company's idle bandwidth for bulk downloads, so, using proxy, SSH tunneling through my Home PC is out of question.
I have a remote drive mounted on my system(ubuntu 10.04 x64), and i have the contents of that drive backed up to dropbox. the problem is, if i unmount the drive, the files disappear from dropbox. is there a way to mirror the contents of the network drive to a localfolder(preferably in such a way that all changes and file deletions are changed on the local folder instantly, but unmounting doesn't delete it all)? It looks like rsync would work, but im not sure how to make it work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs many developers probably do, I have a Windows based machine on which I run XAMPP locally to test my code and a Linux machine with Fedora as my remote server.As I sometimes use .htaccess as a way to authenticate some parts of the website, I end up having two .htaccess files: one with the local path (something line D:My_Webs) and one with my remote path (something like /var/www/html/) to the password file.I have searched high and low, but I cannot seem to find any trick so that I only have to maintain one version of the .htaccess file which can work on both Linux and on Windows machines.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it
i have installed ubuntu 9.04 and desktop xubuntu. i want access the sever from my windows xp using either rdp or vnc. i am able to use the ssh but thats only command line. i need the gui desktop. i have installed x11vnc,tightvnc etc. but whenever i try to connect from my vnc manager,its giveout error.machine actively refused it. i havent configured any port or anything like that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen ever i run ssh -p <port> <user>@<remote IP>, i get a connection has timed out error. (i use the -p <port> part because i'm using a custom port). does anyone know what could be causing this? i know of a few *possible* problems, but i don't know how to test them all.
- I am on the same network as the server (I'm trying to test using remote IP to make sure it works before i go out an try it somewhere else)
-The router could be blocking it (i'm using linksys)
-IPtables may not be set up right (i think it is though. the only thing i've run is "sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT". I have changed the port for the server since then. maybe i have to restart it or something for it to recognise the change? I know very little about IPtables though).
-maybe i have to change something in my client or server config files? (the only config file i've changed is the sshd_config file on the seerver, and that was to change the port to my custom port).
thats all i can think of for now. It may be none of those. I do have the sshd_config and port forwarding in my router set to the same port, so thats good.
I have a problem while copying files from a remote computer to my local one using the scp command. I am sure that I am using it correctly, please check it below:
---
blah@blah.com:~/g4work> scp blah2@blah2.com:IndirectMethod_Spher...s/H_1.mac.root .
---
What I get in return (instead of the statement saying 100% of file copied) is:
---
On this machine the G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
---
The interesting point is that the above returned statement is one of the Environment variables set on both the machines that are necessary to work with a toolkit called Geant4. Here is what I get when I type 'printenv | grep G4' just to show you (note the statement in bold):
---
G4LEVELGAMMADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/PhotonEvaporation2.0
G4INSTALL=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02

The other thing that I would like to mention is that these Geant4 Env. Variables are loaded each time a new (bash) shell is started as a result of the bash login script.
I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?
