View 4 RepliesI have been looking for a piece of software that can do the following; however, I am unsure what category of technology it would fall under. In addition, I am not sure if I am describing it correctly. I am looking for a piece of software that will allow a Bluetooth connection between my desktop, and cell phone. I then can place a Internet based call (SIP software, Skype, Google Talk) via the cell phone, which has been connected to the desktop system by Bluetooth.
I want to be able to receive and send calls via the cellphone, but use Internet for my calls. What got me thinking about this is a house phone I have by Panasonic, which has the capability to pair your cell phone via Bluetooth to the main base-station. This allows the option to answer calls to my house number, via my cell phone.
What is the real difference between system calls and normal function calls. Ultimately function calls too would be passed to kernel for some or the other work.

In which, the 2nd part commands need to run under another bash shell environment. The enter_antoher_bash_env.sh will setup a new shell environment, call "bash". The rest commands need to run under the new env. (I cannot change this script too. )If I run these command one by one manually, it works of course. If I put them into a script, enter_another_bash_env.sh won't return because it calls "bash" command inside.
View 10 Replies View RelatedLast night I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu. This morning I could connect to my wireless network, but not access the internet. I tried several things like manually setting my IP address, but nothing seemed to work, then I found a solution on another site:
Code:
sudo dhclient wlan0
After I performed that action, I could access the internet.I then spent an hour and a half downloading and installing updates, before being prompted to reboot my laptop. I did so, but then could not access the internet again.I have now spent my entire afternoon browsing the internet (on another computer), trying to find a solution. I tried that command again, which now does not work. I have also tried different DNS settings and even plugged an ethernet cable into my laptop, but the internet still doesn't work.
I have just installed 10.04 on Acer laptop 5630.
I can not get my Internet going when I connect to my Dlink DSL 502T.
The network indicator changes from little arches to up and down arrows when I plug the router in which leads me to believe I have a connection.
I can ping addresses ok.
But when I open firefox i just get "connection has timed out"
I have tried changing various network settings but nothing seems to work.
I while back I tried installing Skype form the software centre but for some reason it wouldn't work. Now, with a fresh install of Lucid, I see that Empathy comes pre-installed and allows video chatting. Is it worth setting up a account? Does anyone have experience with Empathy?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just changed my wireless connection over to wired and my computer claims it's connected but when I try to open and webpage (or even ping) it can't connect.
Keep in mind I am plugged directly into the router. Also I'm not sure if this is helpful but, I did have connection sharing for my xbox when I had wireless. I'm typing this on windows 7 which is driving me further into insanity by the minute.
When I click on the network connection sign at the top of the screen on Xubuntu (even on Ubuntu--I uninstalled it to see if that was the problem but the problem persisted on Xubuntu), it will say wireless network 'device not ready'. i tried running a command from the Xubuntu Troubleshooting and it said that my device was turned off for some reason. This is not true as I made sure that I turned it on. I've tried everything else and I am all out of luck. I also do not have a boot-up CD for Xubuntu/Ubuntu and I'm not sure of how to do all those commands in the terminal

About my network card...
Hardware details:
Board: Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card Rev 5.8
Chipset: BCM4312/BCM2050
I forgot to mention at the bottom that it won't let me look at my hardware drivers and it says I don't have the correct things properly installed and then it won't show any drivers (so this problem probably cannot be solved using ndiswrapper).
i recently switched from windows vista to ubuntu 10.04, so i am a complete noob at this stuff... i enabled the ufw a few days ago and ever since then my Internet connection has been pretty spotty. i connect to the wireless network fine, and there is nothing wrong with the actual Internet connection (other computers in the house are using it fine) it is very frustrating and i was wondering if there is a way to stop this, do i need to forward some ports, or do i really even need the firewall at all... i don't really do many things that would allow me to get hacked in the first place..

I'm a first-time Ubuntu user. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop, creating a dual boot in combination with Windows XP. Unfortunately, I can't get my Wireless Internet to work. It looks to me that Ubuntu somehow doesn't accept my Speedtouch dongle, seeing as the little green light on it stays off. The Ubuntu Help function simply suggests to go to Windows and "turn it on", but when I'm in Windows, it IS on... Also, in the network manager, there are NO wireless networks to choose from.
Futher down is some output from some commands that I see mentioned on forums discussing similar problems.
I think I should stress that I'm using a desktop, not a laptop, and that "hooking it up with a cable" is not an option, due to the distance between the desktop and the modem and the size and weight of the desktop. I would also like to stress that I have no experience managing my own Ubuntu system, so try to keep any instructions as simple as possible.

After I installed Lucid on my Netbook, I have different problems with ekiga.
First of all, some information about my ekiga account:
In ekiga I created a SIP-Account with a usual landline phone-number, my voip-provider is 1&1 (in Germany). In ekiga the account is named "Standard%limit", because I cannot register my sip-account without the "%limit". If I leave the "%limit" out, I get the message "Could not register (Forbidden)", but here on ubuntuforums (or maybe on launchpad) I read about the "%limit" as a workaround. Maybe it has something to do with my problem, I don't know.
Now, this is my problem:
Ekiga does not accept incoming phone calls after a few minutes after launching ekiga. Well, let me describe it this way: Usually ekiga plays a ringtone and shows a message whenever there is an incoming call. However, ekiga only behaves as described and expected just after launching ekiga. A few minutes later, lets say five or ten minutes, ekiga does not accept incoming calls anymore. I tested it with my mobile phone - when I call myself on the landline with my mobile phone, I expect ekiga to play the ringtone and show a message that there is an incoming call. However, ekiga does not do anything and after a few seconds the call is terminated automatically. But it is not the same as if ekiga is not running because if ekiga is not running I get the message that the subscriber is not available.
I've been receiving a ton of calls from telemarketers and political callcenters. What would be the simplest way to use Ubuntu to automatically drop calls incoming from blacklisted numbers?
I have Comcast Digital Voice service, which is technically VOIP but I think it interfaces with modems themselves just like any other phone service would.
I have a dedicated Ubuntu server sitting next to a phone jack already, so I'd like to use that if possible.
I've seen FreePBX and Asterisk, and hear that they can do the job. However, I haven't been able to tell just how easily they could be set up. It sounds like they might require me to get rid of all my phones and use soft phones instead... Does anybody know if it is as simple as buying a voice modem and configuring a PBX software to interface with it?
I am building an android, from the source using make command. I want to achieve simple logging while this make is happening.
Aim:
I want to look/log for internal system calls that are being made after i do 'make' command in bash terminal. So that after the make is done, i can look and study the internal method/file calls made while make was happening. In this way i will come to know how the actual building process works.
I would be getting calls from customers who'd require the service I provide. The issue here is I may not always be around to take the calls so I was thinking if there is way by which I can connect my phone to my ubuntu desktop and keep a track of number of calls and simultaneously record them.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use the video calls with skype. The person can see me but I cant see them or myself on the video call box. I have tried the download version from skype and inside my ubuntu software center and each had the same problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've implemented a few custom system calls in my Ubuntu kernel, but I'm having some issues with the return values. Each function returns a variety of non-negative integers depending on which error is encountered. However, when I'm testing the system calls, the only negative value that gets returned to the user program is -1, regardless of what I have in the code.
Is there some special path I have to take to get the proper return values?
for the past 3 days i have tried everything i can find on the internet to get ubuntu to work. I am running a brand new Hp Dv4 laptop. I have downloaded, and installed Ubuntu. When i go to boot it, it takes me to a page where it says it needs to finish the install, and counts down from 5. If you let it complete that, it will go to a black page and sit there forever. Push ctrl + alt + del, and it will take you back to the page where you can choose Windows 7 or Ubuntu.
Go back to ubuntu, this time when it counts down i push Esc, and i have several choices. I have tried them all with the same results, except Demo mode. In demo mode, i get a black screen, and the sound of drums. But it still just sits there. I have tried doing ctrl +alt + f1 in each of the different modes, nothing. Just a black screen.
I can't connect to my ssh-server (on ubuntu 10.04) from any external address. The error in putty is "connection timed out". From my internal network, everything works fine, even if I select my external IP address and port in putty as the destination.
This is what I have done so far:
installed open ssh with the ubuntu server 10.04 cd
set up port forwarding (11041) in my router (seems to work ok, port is open according to "shields up")
configured ssh to use port 11041 in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
changed tcp and udp ssh port in /etc/services to 11041
enabled UFW and did sudo ufw allow ssh

After upgrading to 10.04 I've had to run /etc/init.d networking restart to get my internet connection to work after startup on my desktop computer. Any ideas on how to find out what's wrong and how to fix it? I didn't uprage my laptop yet and it still works just fine so I'm thinking this is related to the upgrade. Softwarewise the only relevant networking related difference between my desktop and laptop is the ubuntu version and that I have openvpn set up on the desktop for work related stuff.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and it appears to be working fine except for one problem: the internet access does not work at all. It is supposed to connect through a wired LAN and can talk to the router but when it comes to opening a webpage or pinging a server it doesn't work. Firefox says that it can't connect and the ping does nothing.
The computer can connect fine when booting Windows XP, but on Ubuntu it can't. Here are some details about the two OSes:
XP: Connects to network and internet
Ubuntu: Connects to network but can't mount the 'Windows Network' folder which is the only thing in the Network directory. Can't connect to internet.
I'm on a Dell Dimension 2400.
I just installed the latest ubuntu (10.4 or something) on my computer, and it seems nice, but it won't connect to my wireless internet. Shouldn't it just automatically detect it? It doesn't seem to.
I'm not very computer savvy, but I figured that it may need to have drivers downloaded so it will work with my computer's wireless internet hardware.
But I don't think I can get any drivers if I'm not connected to the internet.
I do have another little USB wireless receiver, but that has an installation disk with an EXE file, which apparently does not work on ubuntu.
Note: My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525. Ubuntu is installed as the only operating system. It is freshly installed.
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Inspirion 1501 and I can't get the internet to work. I've tried configuring a DSL connection from System> Preferences> Network Connections and It doesn't recognize the password. On Windows it works just fine.

I remember having a similar problem with Ubuntu 9.10 on an different computer but I never found a fix to it. I tried searching for fixes to similar problems but none of them seemed to work.
I no longer have a Auto eth0 connection. I am running 10.04 and have not done any major changes. Here is my ifconfig -a:
