Ubuntu :: No Internet / Get It To Work?

Jul 31, 2010

I have just installed 10.04 on Acer laptop 5630.

I can not get my Internet going when I connect to my Dlink DSL 502T.

The network indicator changes from little arches to up and down arrows when I plug the router in which leads me to believe I have a connection.

I can ping addresses ok.

But when I open firefox i just get "connection has timed out"

I have tried changing various network settings but nothing seems to work.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Internet Does Not Work

Apr 18, 2010

Last night I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu. This morning I could connect to my wireless network, but not access the internet. I tried several things like manually setting my IP address, but nothing seemed to work, then I found a solution on another site:

Code:

sudo dhclient wlan0

After I performed that action, I could access the internet.I then spent an hour and a half downloading and installing updates, before being prompted to reboot my laptop. I did so, but then could not access the internet again.I have now spent my entire afternoon browsing the internet (on another computer), trying to find a solution. I tried that command again, which now does not work. I have also tried different DNS settings and even plugged an ethernet cable into my laptop, but the internet still doesn't work.

Ubuntu :: Internet Connection Won't Work?

Apr 19, 2010

I just changed my wireless connection over to wired and my computer claims it's connected but when I try to open and webpage (or even ping) it can't connect.

Keep in mind I am plugged directly into the router. Also I'm not sure if this is helpful but, I did have connection sharing for my xbox when I had wireless. I'm typing this on windows 7 which is driving me further into insanity by the minute.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Internet To Work

May 6, 2010

When I click on the network connection sign at the top of the screen on Xubuntu (even on Ubuntu--I uninstalled it to see if that was the problem but the problem persisted on Xubuntu), it will say wireless network 'device not ready'. i tried running a command from the Xubuntu Troubleshooting and it said that my device was turned off for some reason. This is not true as I made sure that I turned it on. I've tried everything else and I am all out of luck. I also do not have a boot-up CD for Xubuntu/Ubuntu and I'm not sure of how to do all those commands in the terminal
.
About my network card...

Hardware details:

Board: Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card Rev 5.8
Chipset: BCM4312/BCM2050

I forgot to mention at the bottom that it won't let me look at my hardware drivers and it says I don't have the correct things properly installed and then it won't show any drivers (so this problem probably cannot be solved using ndiswrapper).

Ubuntu :: Ufw Causing The Internet Not To Work

Jun 24, 2010

i recently switched from windows vista to ubuntu 10.04, so i am a complete noob at this stuff... i enabled the ufw a few days ago and ever since then my Internet connection has been pretty spotty. i connect to the wireless network fine, and there is nothing wrong with the actual Internet connection (other computers in the house are using it fine) it is very frustrating and i was wondering if there is a way to stop this, do i need to forward some ports, or do i really even need the firewall at all... i don't really do many things that would allow me to get hacked in the first place..

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Wireless Internet To Work

Sep 4, 2010

I'm a first-time Ubuntu user. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop, creating a dual boot in combination with Windows XP. Unfortunately, I can't get my Wireless Internet to work. It looks to me that Ubuntu somehow doesn't accept my Speedtouch dongle, seeing as the little green light on it stays off. The Ubuntu Help function simply suggests to go to Windows and "turn it on", but when I'm in Windows, it IS on... Also, in the network manager, there are NO wireless networks to choose from.

Futher down is some output from some commands that I see mentioned on forums discussing similar problems.

I think I should stress that I'm using a desktop, not a laptop, and that "hooking it up with a cable" is not an option, due to the distance between the desktop and the modem and the size and weight of the desktop. I would also like to stress that I have no experience managing my own Ubuntu system, so try to keep any instructions as simple as possible.

Ubuntu Installation :: Find On The Internet To Get To Work?

Mar 19, 2010

for the past 3 days i have tried everything i can find on the internet to get ubuntu to work. I am running a brand new Hp Dv4 laptop. I have downloaded, and installed Ubuntu. When i go to boot it, it takes me to a page where it says it needs to finish the install, and counts down from 5. If you let it complete that, it will go to a black page and sit there forever. Push ctrl + alt + del, and it will take you back to the page where you can choose Windows 7 or Ubuntu.

Go back to ubuntu, this time when it counts down i push Esc, and i have several choices. I have tried them all with the same results, except Demo mode. In demo mode, i get a black screen, and the sound of drums. But it still just sits there. I have tried doing ctrl +alt + f1 in each of the different modes, nothing. Just a black screen.

Ubuntu Servers :: Ssh Doesn't Work From Internet

May 2, 2010

I can't connect to my ssh-server (on ubuntu 10.04) from any external address. The error in putty is "connection timed out". From my internal network, everything works fine, even if I select my external IP address and port in putty as the destination.

This is what I have done so far:

installed open ssh with the ubuntu server 10.04 cd
set up port forwarding (11041) in my router (seems to work ok, port is open according to "shields up")
configured ssh to use port 11041 in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
changed tcp and udp ssh port in /etc/services to 11041
enabled UFW and did sudo ufw allow ssh

Ubuntu :: Internet Won't Work Without Restarting It After Startup

May 16, 2010

After upgrading to 10.04 I've had to run /etc/init.d networking restart to get my internet connection to work after startup on my desktop computer. Any ideas on how to find out what's wrong and how to fix it? I didn't uprage my laptop yet and it still works just fine so I'm thinking this is related to the upgrade. Softwarewise the only relevant networking related difference between my desktop and laptop is the ubuntu version and that I have openvpn set up on the desktop for work related stuff.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Access Does Not Work At All

Jun 21, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and it appears to be working fine except for one problem: the internet access does not work at all. It is supposed to connect through a wired LAN and can talk to the router but when it comes to opening a webpage or pinging a server it doesn't work. Firefox says that it can't connect and the ping does nothing.

The computer can connect fine when booting Windows XP, but on Ubuntu it can't. Here are some details about the two OSes:
XP: Connects to network and internet
Ubuntu: Connects to network but can't mount the 'Windows Network' folder which is the only thing in the Network directory. Can't connect to internet.
I'm on a Dell Dimension 2400.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get The Internet To Work On Laptop?

Jul 12, 2010

I just installed the latest ubuntu (10.4 or something) on my computer, and it seems nice, but it won't connect to my wireless internet. Shouldn't it just automatically detect it? It doesn't seem to.

I'm not very computer savvy, but I figured that it may need to have drivers downloaded so it will work with my computer's wireless internet hardware.

But I don't think I can get any drivers if I'm not connected to the internet.

I do have another little USB wireless receiver, but that has an installation disk with an EXE file, which apparently does not work on ubuntu.

Note: My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525. Ubuntu is installed as the only operating system. It is freshly installed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Doesn't Work After Upgrade

Jan 4, 2010

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. When I restarted, I admired the new login menu, then went to Firefox. I noticed that my wireless didn't work (it did in 9.04) Thinking I'd just need to reinstall the drivers, I plugged in the computer to a working Ethernet outlet with a working cord. I noticed that Ubuntu didn't tell me that Auto eth0 was connected. It didn't tell me anything. And then I went to Google and realized that the wired connection didn't work either. Then I came here on an iPod Touch and you know the rest.

Edit: And other devices work too on the network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Internet And Webcam Does Not Work

May 12, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 inside Windows 7 (demo version) for 2 weeks or so now and I really loved it. So much so that, last night I decided to burn the boot cd and put a full installation of it on the computer, instead of using Windows 7. After doing so, I started getting some small problems.

First problem was with aMSN, the webcam doesn't work anymore. It used to work when I was using the demo version of Ubuntu, but not anymore. I had to use meebo to get it to work, don't think that's a problem with Ubuntu though.
Secondly, Firefox is running really terribly. Whenever I try to watch a video, it stutters REALLY bad, as if it's maxing out my CPU.

Third, I'm getting an error message whenever I start Google Chrome, it says:
"Your profile could not be opened correctly. Some features may be unavailable. Please check that profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents."
It plays videos well but half time the audio doesn't work and I have to restart Chrome. (I tried uninstalling and reinstalling through synaptic, but that didn't work, the problem was still there).

Fourth and finally, the internet is just really really slow. Since the moment I installed the full version of Ubuntu it's be REALLY slow. I tried a download through bittorrent and the speeds were terrible, I ran a speed test while downloading (upload was limited to 5 kb/s) and I was still getting speeds of just around 10kb/s. So I closed bittorrent ran a speed test again and I had 1mb download and .75mb upload with 31 ping. I ran the test again and got 42 ping with same download and same upload. While I was downloading, the ping was 309. My normal speed is supposed to be 6mb download and 1mb upload

I guess version 7.0X had internet issues aswell because, when I did a google search for a solution, it turned up several results on how to fix it for 7.0X, which didn't work because the alias list didn't have anything in there. (the fix had something to do with ipv6). I tried direct connecting my internet and the speedtest results were normal, so I've concluded that it has something to do with my router. However, I don't know how to do a firmware update or troubleshoot the issue on Ubuntu. I finally decided to give up on Ubuntu and switch back to Windows 7. However, my drive is currently formatted into ext4 and I need to go back to NTFS, how do I do that? Could I just use gparted?
