I'm using ubuntu 10.04. I installed SMplayer from this repository. But I cant hear any sound in this SMplayer when I tried to play .flv files (other format are playeing nicely) But these flv files are playing nicely on vlc (theres no sound problem on vlc). So what should I do to get sound when I play flv on SMplayer?

smplayer won't play any of my online radio stations in .asx format. vlc and totem will play them so it is not a big deal, but I would like smplayer to work.

Now I can play back these files perfectly with mplayer from teh command line but when I open them with smplayer there is no video, just (choppy) sound. Xine also plays them back now although it didn't before. I know the first time I ran smplayer on this installation I had to choose which version of mplayer it was running with but don't know if I can do this again to tell it to use the installed medibuntu mplayer. Press to resume fails, but only if you have watched a fair bit or have moved on in the movie.Interestingly the pause symbol comes off as if play has resumed but it's not actually playing. You can press pause again and it shows it as if pausing again.

In Opensuse 11.3 I was able to play files on my NAS drive from within smplayer over samba shares or ftp. I would simply use dolphin to browse to the file on the nas drive (either through samba or ftp protocol), double click the .avi file and it would load smplayer and begin playing immediately.
In 11.4 I have samba set up using the same smb.conf file However, if I double click the .avi file it copies the entire contents to the local computer before launching smplayer. If I use smplayer's file selector and navigate to the file on the samba share I get the message "you can only select local files" This is a different behaviour to that from 11.3 However, using the ftp protocol from within dolphin smplayer launches immediately and begins playing. smplayer is launched using the shortcut command

However, sound keeps disappearing in smplayer and won't come back until I reboot. Sound is still present in all other players including mplayer.
Running smplayer from the command line gives no output so I don't know what night be wrong. Volume is at max and not muted.
Had ubuntu 10.10, sound worked fine. wiped that, installed xubuntu 11.04, sound worked fine with banshee. had some stability issues, so i then installed xubuntu 10.10. now, on the fresh install, i only have sound from smplayer when playing videos. NO sound from banshee, vlc(videos or otherwise), parole, or exaile. neither when IEC959 is active no disabled.
here is a screenshot of alsamixer showing that volume is up, and un-muted. and the xfce4-mixer as well.however, the upper right panel indicator looks like a mute symbol, or at least a no volume symbol. ive tried removing, purging, then re-installing banshee multiple times. ive checked the other sound cards listed in xfce4-mixer; they are all un-muted (found this on a couple forums, fixed this problem for a few people, but not me!). I have been using VLC to play downloaded files which have been .flv because that was the player that started when the files were selected and it just worked. I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.
I have a weird problem where the playing any track from Amarok results in no sound being heard from the speakers. However, from everywhere else - YaST audio configuration, openSUSE startup, VLC, SMplayer et al - the sound is heard fine. I have no clue as to how I can go about fixing this. whenever I try to play something on Amarok I'm running on openSUSE 11.3, KDE 4.5 ( though this problem existed on KDE 4.4 as well).
i'm running 11.2 kde 4.3. i'm having issues with both smplayer and vlc. first, when i play an audio cd through smplayer, it pauses every 14-15 second. by pause i mean that the sound and time counter stops, and i actually hear the disc drive make a sound, the *typical disc-read sound. i tried a few discs, in case it was a specific cd; same thing for all. i also looked through the preferences to see if there was a setting that addressed it; nothing i see seems to address the issue.
playing the same cds in kscd works fine. but kscd really sucks....excuse me, it really really sucks. with vlc, whenever i start vlc, it will appear in my taskbar, but there is no other sign of its existence besides this. no system tray icon, no gui or any other sign of its presence besides the taskbar.
I have 11.2 installed on a dual core 64 bit system. The sound works when I use Yast to look at the sound device and select "play test sound". I haven't gotten anything out of Amarok or SMPlayer. The interesting thing is that if I search my system for libdirect, I find that I have libdirectfb-1.2.so.0. Is this a newer rev or a different library because of my platform?
After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Prior to kernel 2.6.28 audio works on this Samsung Q1 Tablet PC. Any kernels from 2.6.28 onwards will not recognize my sound card and therefore won't play sound no matter what. I've proved it running different livecds (Suse, Mandriva, PCLOS, etc.) with kernels 2.6.25, 2.6.27, etc., all with audio. Now, how can I use/import a suitable kernel for Lucid Lynx 10.04 so that it will recognize my sound card (snd-hda-intel) on this Q1?

I'm currently running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a Pentium 4. I'm currently using the LXDE desktop environment but the problem is the same in GNOME. I have new Altec-Lansing BX1220 speakers. They didn't come with a driver disk and a Google search didn't return any drivers, so they should be plug-and-play. When I plug them in, the light turns on, and with the volume high enough it returns feedback. However, they don't actually play what the computer is playing. I went into alsamixer and made sure all the volumes were turned up; it didn't help. It was plugged into my microphone jack.
