View 4 RepliesAfter upgrading to 11.04, it takes ~24 seconds to get to the login screen. I unchecked the startup programs I didn't want to load, but that didn't help.
Also, I can't figure out why the Login Sound doesn't play. I've set everything I know of except for where you unmute the startup audio. thought it was in /etc/init.d/alsa(something).
I have an Acer Travelmate 630(14.1" model) running Ubuntu 11.04 and I have experienced a frequent amount of freezing. Usually when I log in, the login sound effect doesn't play, the cursor turns into a wheel which changes back to the normal cursor, then changes into the wheel, but frozen. At this point the computer has completely frozen, nothing moving, no input of any kind responisive, and I have to hard reboot. Several times after that the problem goes away and I am able to log in and use it normally. I also experienced freezing when loading up Ubuntu Software Centre and using Firefox.
Sometimes after leaving it for a while, the problem is gone, but after an hour or two completely freezes again. Everything on the machine is stock, apart from upgraded 1GB RAM and 60GB HDD. And I use an external monitor because the internal one has a damaged cable(replacement coming soon). Are there anyways I can track down the problem? I have already uninstalled compiz and am running Ubuntu Classic mode. I am happy to downgrade to 9.04 as that is compatible with my USB WiFi adaptor without doing complex stuff, but would like to solve the problem on 11.04.
I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.
I hear no login sound when I login to my ubuntu. I checked at startup applications and found GNOME login sound is enabled. The command used there is
Code:
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"
.
Its not only this, but there is no other sounds enabled - for mouse clicks etc
After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?
pc specs:
Pentium 4 2.6 ghz
512mb ram
ati radeon 9600 graphics card
And i installed it using wubi.
i have uninstalled and reinstalled alsa and made sure its not muted, in pulse audio it displays sound is coming out when i play a song, but no sound is actually coming out.. i dont want to go back to windows, but if i cant get sound im going to have to
View 1 Replies View Related10.04 will not play sound. It's definitely a kernel issue and I am not the only one from what I read elsewhere. Prior to kernel 2.6.28 audio works on this Samsung Q1 Tablet PC. Any kernels from 2.6.28 onwards will not recognize my sound card and therefore won't play sound no matter what. I've proved it running different livecds (Suse, Mandriva, PCLOS, etc.) with kernels 2.6.25, 2.6.27, etc., all with audio. Now, how can I use/import a suitable kernel for Lucid Lynx 10.04 so that it will recognize my sound card (snd-hda-intel) on this Q1?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a network of about 25 computers. All of them running either Ubuntu 10.04 or 9.10. I can ssh into each machine with no problems. I want to type a terminal command and have an audio file play in the speakers of the user at the remote machine. The users have soft phones..... all sound is pushed through their headsets..... If I wanted to say.... play a cat meow in their ear or maybe a dog barking.... how would I do this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedKill me, but) I log into root on my machine, and I downloaded an flv file. I tried to play it with Totem, but it, for some odd reason, kept showing up with big black boxes in it. When I exited Totem, my volume went mute and I can not un-mute it. This only happens to the root account. What should I do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu 10.04. I installed SMplayer from this repository. But I cant hear any sound in this SMplayer when I tried to play .flv files (other format are playeing nicely) But these flv files are playing nicely on vlc (theres no sound problem on vlc). So what should I do to get sound when I play flv on SMplayer?

I have "ubuntu-restricted" extras and "w64codecs" installed but no luck.
I'm running on Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64.
Tried to play those same files on Linux Mint 64bits with success...
I did a fresh install last night everything is fine but my sound will not play through speakers, but will play through headphones. My video and sound come out of hdmi video card.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed wine and spotify.
When I installed it, it played from my speakers.
I set up wine audio config to OSS Driver.
However after reboot, sound does not come out from the speakers.
could anyone tell me how to fix the problem please.
I'm currently running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a Pentium 4. I'm currently using the LXDE desktop environment but the problem is the same in GNOME. I have new Altec-Lansing BX1220 speakers. They didn't come with a driver disk and a Google search didn't return any drivers, so they should be plug-and-play. When I plug them in, the light turns on, and with the volume high enough it returns feedback. However, they don't actually play what the computer is playing. I went into alsamixer and made sure all the volumes were turned up; it didn't help. It was plugged into my microphone jack.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting my logout sound to play. All my sounds work, the window sounds work, as well as the login, but I cannot get my logout sound to play. I have looked at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...io/+bug/214370, tried many of the solutions(ex. installing esound package) there, but to no avail. could pulseaudio be the problem? could it be just some code in a file? Has anyone figured this out?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get our 32 bit application, which uses wxWidgets and libgstreamer, to play media on 64 bit Ubuntu (and Kubuntu).
The application itself runs fine, but no media play at all, neither music nor videos.
I have installed "ia32-libs" but no joy.
I have also verified that the machine itself plays sound fine; the same media my application does not play, do play fine using the native 64 bit applications. And before you ask, yes -- the application runs perfectly on 32 bit *buntu
i've installed ubuntu studio on my old pc and it's barely working. (sorry for my language) when i put on player to play a song everything is ok but when i try to make an other program to play sound it doesnt... i saw about the jack server but i can't unterstand what am i suposed to do. the programs that succsessfully play sound are: media player, chrome, mozilla, some games.

i am not able to play any music files, in Linux but
it plays well in Windows
Configuration of my Desktop PC is as follows;
a. Redhat Enterprise Linux 4
b. Kernel version 2.6.9-22.ELsmp
c. Output from lspci | grep -i audio command :
"00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)"
I'm on Kubuntu 9.10, using Totem to play .wmv files, and certain of them cause the player to search for an audio codec (wmap?) that is never found. The video played without audio after that. So I followed advice to remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10, and reboot. A new .gstreamer-0.10 directory appeared, but now, Totem will not even play the video. It recognizes the audio codec however. The video codec shows up as "Windows Media..." but resolution is 0 x 0, and nothing ever appears in the window. I tried uninstalling and re-installing w32codecs and non-free-codecs, and removing the registry files under ~/gstreamer-0.10 and using gst-inspect to rebuild the database,
but nothing helps.
I have onboard sound, and have a blue jack that can be used for input sound wise. You can plug a device in and then just play it through your speakers. This works for me in Windows 7, but I'm not sure how to get this to work in Ubuntu.
I went to my sound settings, but didn't see anything to make my input jack active. I'm just basically using my pc as a pass through to play through my pc speakers.
I am using Kubuntu 10.04 When I play any media file, I am not able to hear any sound. A few weeks ago, except DragonPlayer and Amarok no other app on my system was able to play sound(vlc etc.). A few days ago, even they stopped working and I saw a message related to Phonon and HDA Intel card of my system that it is not working properly. I also have dual boot with winXP and it sound play very well on it. Searching the net, I have tried these:
[Code]...
It was so close to a perfect install. The only thing really missing is this issue with the sound. I've searched all over the forums and i found one thing where you get the model and codecs and write them to a file, however, I can't seem to find what my "model" is because none of the postings have anything about Lenovo laptops. Here is the command they all asked for:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC269
Codec: Intel G45 DEVIBX
With that info, how do I get the model and how do I get my speakers to stop playing when headphones are plugged in. Also, I don't have any software installed like pulse audio either, so it's not that.
