I did a fresh install last night everything is fine but my sound will not play through speakers, but will play through headphones. My video and sound come out of hdmi video card.
View 1 RepliesI have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a Pentium 4. I'm currently using the LXDE desktop environment but the problem is the same in GNOME. I have new Altec-Lansing BX1220 speakers. They didn't come with a driver disk and a Google search didn't return any drivers, so they should be plug-and-play. When I plug them in, the light turns on, and with the volume high enough it returns feedback. However, they don't actually play what the computer is playing. I went into alsamixer and made sure all the volumes were turned up; it didn't help. It was plugged into my microphone jack.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have onboard sound, and have a blue jack that can be used for input sound wise. You can plug a device in and then just play it through your speakers. This works for me in Windows 7, but I'm not sure how to get this to work in Ubuntu.
I went to my sound settings, but didn't see anything to make my input jack active. I'm just basically using my pc as a pass through to play through my pc speakers.
It was so close to a perfect install. The only thing really missing is this issue with the sound. I've searched all over the forums and i found one thing where you get the model and codecs and write them to a file, however, I can't seem to find what my "model" is because none of the postings have anything about Lenovo laptops. Here is the command they all asked for:

With that info, how do I get the model and how do I get my speakers to stop playing when headphones are plugged in. Also, I don't have any software installed like pulse audio either, so it's not that.
I have tried to find a solution for this problem, but i haven't found one yet. I have a mediabox with no speakers, and a desktop with speakers. So I want the audio from the mediabox played through the speakers of my desktop. Is there anyone who knows the best way to achieve this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.
This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't know what I did but I lost all audio. I'm running F15 with gnome 3. By opening system settings and then sound I don't find anything muted. Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.

I have a motorola Droid, and it's pairing via bluetooth to my thinkpad just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit.What I want to do is pair the PC to my phone and have the PC act as the headset, i.e., the audio from my phone comes out my PC speakers. Ultimately I'm trying to record audio from my phone, voicemails from Verizon that I'd like to save to audio files. A couple years ago I was able to do something like this with a Thinkpad in WinXP, and record audio using Audacity. I'm not seeing how to make the PC work as a headset.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy friend and I have a problem. We both wish to listen to songs at the same time. But the problem is that our choices of songs are different. So, I suggested that he listen to his favorite song on the speakers whilst I listen to my favorite song via headphones.
But, whenever we do try this idea the speakers won't play when I plug in the headphones.
Anyway so we can make both speakers and headphones play different songs at once?
After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I own a netbook (samsung nf210 to be exact) which has Linux Mint 10 installed. What I want to do is to make both, headphones and speakers, play the same output at the same time. I believe it is possible to make it since many people are facing such condition and treat it as a pulseaudio bug (or smth like that) And it would be perfect if it was possible to easily switch between the modified configuration (dual output) and original configuration. I've noticed there are some profiles (analog output, duplex, surround etc.). Is there any way to modify those profiles? If it was, I could modify the Analog Surround Output 4.0 profile and assign rear speakers to headphones and front speakers to internal speakers of my computer.

The rear two speakers play audio simultaneously i.e running the terminal sound test "front left" and "front right" come out of both the rear speakers at the same time. I am running Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 with all of the latest updates. May be unrelated, but also there seems to be a very large amount of lag when playing system sounds. Takes a few seconds after the event has occurred for the associated sound to play.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu 10.10 OS in a VMware player in which I am unable to get any sound at all. The host windows os plays sound so it can't be the sound card.
The default player is rythymbox and I also have VLC media player installed. Neither will produce any sound. When I press the "test speakers" button on the sound preferences hardware tab, there is no sound.
Since I bought my computer and I installed Linux on it, I had this problem...
Back in the day I never Found a REAL Solution and finally my "solution" (in Fedora)
was installing "pavucontrol" to choose the Devices when I needed to Switch.
Via the Pulse Audio Volume Control I was able to Mute speakers or Headphones
at my will, even if I had both connected, this thing worked from F12 to F14 very well...
(The same problem is present in every distro I tried and sometimes it was solved the same way in other distros)
But Now, I'm in F15 And my magic workout doesn't work anymore... it doesn't matter
wich device I choose as output, the PC simply don't mute one or another and my headphones and speakers sound at the same time.

Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP laptop. I have installed Ubuntu on 2 of my computers with no problems whatsoever, but this laptop is just a problem. I already had to install the driver for my wireless card, and now I noticed there are no sounds coming from the speakers, but if I plug headphones into the headphone jack, there is sound.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with a Realtek HD sound card. When I plug headphones in, the sound comes out of the headphones AND the built-in speakers, instead of the speakers muting as they should.
This happens on both the live CD and the installed OS which i'm running. I've tried every fix I can find on the Internet, including a setting changed in the text-mode ALSA Mixer, installing a package from synaptic, and other fixes for older versions of Ubuntu that can't be done on 10.04.
Before I upgraded to 10.10, I would hear sound on both my PC speakers and on my TV. The speakers are connected via the standard speaker out, the TV was connected via the line-out, through a stereo to RCA adapter. Video is supplied to the TV via HDMI. Now that I've upgraded to Maverick, however, I no longer get sound on the TV. This isn't the usual "sound stopped working completely on upgrade" issue, because I get flawless sound via the PC speakers just as before. I've tried most of the debugging steps recommended in other threads about audio, with no improvement.
The weird thing about all this is, when I plug other speakers or headphones into the same port, I hear audio. So I'm starting to suspect that the problem has to do with the HDMI audio out capability on my video card (an nvidia GT 240), which might have suddenly come alive (if not fully functional) with Maverick's new version of ALSA. I don't know what signal(s) my TV thinks it's getting and have no way of troubleshooting things on that side, but it seems possible that the HDMI it's getting video through is also sending a null/silent audio stream, and that stomps the analog audio signal it's getting from my sound card.
I see two output devices in Sound Preferences, "Internal Audio" and "High Definition Audio Controller". "Internal Audio", ie my onboard sound, is what's producing audio via the speakers. HDMI has never produced any audio, and I don't really need it to if I can just make it work the way it did before. I've tried completely disabling that device, even adding the "snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi" module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist - no change.
The solution for this could be one of two things: one, I could try to get the HDMI audio out working and let that be what my TV receives, two I try to make the audio setup work as before, with analog audio going to both speakers and TV. Thoughts? I'm leaning towards the latter, ie not bothering with the HDMI audio, as having another audio source would probably mean messing with PulseAudio which has otherwise worked 100% fine for me up until now. If need be I can supply more details on hardware, CLI output etc.

My headset is doing a fine job, using the standard audio connections, but I'd like to be able to use speakers as well. Someone's given me a very basic "soundball" ‒ only visible identification, the word 'goobay' ‒ that's been doing well on another O/S. When I plug it in, it's on speaking terms with the USB port as far as drawing power goes: but doesn't play anything.
The options from Sound preferences don't include anything as obvious as "use USB port/ use audio connectors". Is there an easy answer?

When I plug my headphones in, the speakers go silent as they are supposed to do. But I can't hear anything in my headphone. I do have two headphone-line-outs on this laptop, but it's the same effect on both.Does anyone have an idea?
