OpenSUSE :: Smplayer And Vlc Nuttiness - Sound And Time Counter Stop

i'm running 11.2 kde 4.3. i'm having issues with both smplayer and vlc. first, when i play an audio cd through smplayer, it pauses every 14-15 second. by pause i mean that the sound and time counter stops, and i actually hear the disc drive make a sound, the *typical disc-read sound. i tried a few discs, in case it was a specific cd; same thing for all. i also looked through the preferences to see if there was a setting that addressed it; nothing i see seems to address the issue.
playing the same cds in kscd works fine. but kscd really sucks....excuse me, it really really sucks. with vlc, whenever i start vlc, it will appear in my taskbar, but there is no other sign of its existence besides this. no system tray icon, no gui or any other sign of its presence besides the taskbar.
I have been using VLC to play downloaded files which have been .flv because that was the player that started when the files were selected and it just worked. The sound device is just shown as "default" but I have no idea what that is.I have just downloaded another file and when I clicked on it SMPlayer opened and started to play but there was no sound.
Wondered why SMPlayer started instead of VLC and saw that the newest file was .mp4, however SMPlayer doesn't give any sound with the .flv videos either, on the other hand VLC plays .mp4 files too with sound.However when I searched for the suggested file I couldn't find it but before I go any further, is this a real problem or could it be due to having the sound turned off from the keyboard? .
I have a weird problem where the playing any track from Amarok results in no sound being heard from the speakers. However, from everywhere else - YaST audio configuration, openSUSE startup, VLC, SMplayer et al - the sound is heard fine. I have no clue as to how I can go about fixing this. Hoping someone could assist me with this. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520. I have 11.2 installed on a dual core 64 bit system. The sound works when I use Yast to look at the sound device and select "play test sound". I haven't gotten anything out of Amarok or SMPlayer. I followed the guide listed in other posts to update the system although I could not seem to solve all the dependences. When I use SMPlayer to play an MP3 file, I get a message saying that I am missing libdirectfb-1.1.so.0
I tried the following: Code: ldd /usr/bin/mplayer | grep libdirect libdirectfb-1.1.so.0 => not found This seems to be the only missing library. The interesting thing is that if I search my system for libdirect, I find that I have libdirectfb-1.2.so.0. Is this a newer rev or a different library because of my platform?
I have a linux router box with ubuntu which routes internet for several people. There is no extra traffic shaping, so everybody can get the whole bandwidth when its free. What I would like to have is a real time traffic counter per ip, just like a program called "iptraf" but on a per-ip basis. Iptraf can only count on a per-connection basis and thus cannot display a bandwidth that a certain ip has taken (because a single ip can start several onnections). So a console program with text interface like iptraf would be perfect - does anybody know about such a program? After some googling I came to the conclusion that such a program does not exist (which must be wrong - i think that per-ip real time traffic flow information is the first thing every router owner would like to know).
my friend is having major sound problems when she is trying to play counter strike 1.6 on her ubuntu (latest version). she can only play it trough wine emulator and wine itself is updated to latest version.
from what she told me and i seen - most of the times she doesn't have sound at all. can you maybe point me on what should we do about it? i googled some "solutions" like disabling oss and etc. but it doesn't make any difference (killall pulseaudio for example removes all of her sound like videos sound and etc.).
I'm using ubuntu 10.04. I installed SMplayer from this repository. But I cant hear any sound in this SMplayer when I tried to play .flv files (other format are playeing nicely) But these flv files are playing nicely on vlc (theres no sound problem on vlc). So what should I do to get sound when I play flv on SMplayer?
Had ubuntu 10.10, sound worked fine. wiped that, installed xubuntu 11.04, sound worked fine with banshee. had some stability issues, so i then installed xubuntu 10.10. now, on the fresh install, i only have sound from smplayer when playing videos. NO sound from banshee, vlc(videos or otherwise), parole, or exaile. neither when IEC959 is active no disabled.
here is a screenshot of alsamixer showing that volume is up, and un-muted. and the xfce4-mixer as well.however, the upper right panel indicator looks like a mute symbol, or at least a no volume symbol. ive tried removing, purging, then re-installing banshee multiple times. ive checked the other sound cards listed in xfce4-mixer; they are all un-muted (found this on a couple forums, fixed this problem for a few people, but not me!). What can I do?
Installed 11.3 with KDE, actually it is working good with 512MB RAM. But there is not loud, but annoying noise, coming from speakers, some electronic noise. No such sound in XP. code...
In the older version of firefox the tabs are right above the browser window. In this version there in the wrong place. It's counter-intuitive to not have it right above the browser window. How do put it back? Else, how do install the older firefox.
i have a little problem i use ubuntu on my htpc, which is connected to a LG Plasma 42 the playback from smplayer is ok, but after some minutes, let's say, 30 the TV goes to black and shows "no image detected", then i have to move the mouse in order to recover the image imagine that in the middle of a movie (a great movie, like THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS) what can i do?
When I started to play songs, I have the normal sound. However, after some time, the songs are still being played but there is no sound anymore. It is not for music player so I don't think it is a player problem. In addition, after I delete and reinstall the audio card, the sound comes back. I have another problem about sound card disturbing me. When I watch ..... using firefox, there is no audio from the video. However, I do have the audio when the chrome is used. What could cause that? I kind of believe those two problems are related. The problem happens after I upgrade my 10.3 to 11.2 and now I am using 11.3. Does that come from the new configuration conflicts with the old one?
I wish to know how to install smplayer, I just downloaded from SMPlayer - Downloads and I choose the file smplayer-0.6.9.tar.bz2 (1.64 MB) and the problem is I can't install it. I have OpenSuSE 11.2 with KDE.
Using smplayer from Packman in 11.3 - If I play a video (.avi, mp4...whatever) Use space bar to pause. Press to resume fails, but only if you have watched a fair bit or have moved on in the movie.Interestingly the pause symbol comes off as if play has resumed but it's not actually playing. You can press pause again and it shows it as if pausing again. Darn, this hard to explain.I switched to VLC and it's fine but I can't seem to get that to pick up where I left off (enqueue).ie; if you have the same experience I'd be interested to know.or you know the setting in vlc to resume a movie where you left off..

Does anyone now if SMplayer is able to disable screensaver when playing video? There is an option to have SMplayer to do so within the settings menubut that does nothing, screensaver is still being activated after 5 min. Anyone managed to have the player do this? I am on KDE4 by the way.Kaffeine does disable screensaver but I do not like the KDE4 Kaffeine.
I can't get any of the video equalizer controls to work. Hue, brightness etc. If I run mplayer the brightness works but not the hue. Xine does better. Brightness, contrast and saturation work but not hue. I installed using the instructions in the multi-media post.
SMplayer plays every .mkv i have but i cant seem to hide the top gui bar when it goes full screen. smplayer seem to be the only player that i know plays any .mkv. while others i get a 264h errors and vlc can play most .mkv files but not all the ones i have.(tried Banshee,wine, totem) So i'm just looking for a quick fix Are there any other players that can play .mkv files (fullscreen with no annoying bars)or how do i hide the tool bar in smplayer when it goes fullscreen? (because i can't seem to find a hide option for the gui)
I don't really want to fix the 264h.errors it just.. bleh i've been surfing the web for a few hours trying to find a fix and it's been very time consuming.
Few days back I changed the video playing speed to faster,since that day,SMplayer keep playing video at high speed even I've change the speed to normal...
I think I selected the wrong time during the installation and now at the top right corner, my time keeps changing back to one hour ahead. Not sure why.I've went into the Preferences of the Time/Date > Time Settings > and set an hour back manually. I check back in 30-45 minutes, it's back another hour ahead. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1545.
I have mentioned this in another thread elsewhere but perhaps this is a better location. In Opensuse 11.3 I was able to play files on my NAS drive from within smplayer over samba shares or ftp. I would simply use dolphin to browse to the file on the nas drive (either through samba or ftp protocol), double click the .avi file and it would load smplayer and begin playing immediately.
In 11.4 I have samba set up using the same smb.conf file However, if I double click the .avi file it copies the entire contents to the local computer before launching smplayer. If I use smplayer's file selector and navigate to the file on the samba share I get the message "you can only select local files" This is a different behaviour to that from 11.3 However, using the ftp protocol from within dolphin smplayer launches immediately and begins playing. smplayer is launched using the shortcut command

i recently switched to ubuntu 9.10 from win vista, i am having a problem... in ubuntu when ever i do any changes it asks me for my password, i know that its for my own PC's securiety but now i am really annoyed with this.
I recently bought a Shuttle XS-35 Mini-Barebone-PC and filled it with a 2GB Corsair RAM and a 1 TB WD Scorpion Blue Drive.After assembling all the parts I simply wanted to install Ubuntu but it simply doesn't work. However then I had the idea it would be good to kinda get the drive to a completely clean state and used the tools to safely wipe the whole HDD (by writing zeros everywhere as the tool tells me). The tool ran good for around 30 minutes but suddenly the write speed showing in the console window would go down to 0B/s (meaning basically nothing at all I suppose). I tried it 2 more times and it always came to a halt at the 10-20GB mark.
So this lead me to belief that that is also the problem while installing, that my drive doesn't want to wark anymore but rather just sleep a bit.What could be the problem? Is it a hardware error? Is there some linux system setting that could whip my HDD whenever it gets lazy? Did I do something else wrong?
If I use Gnome, is "gnome-power-preferences" the only place where I can configure the system to stop or not to stop spinning HDD as a power saving tool? Is there any other option outside GUI?
Just installed F15 using preupgrade (from F14) and now, every time I reboot, time jumps backwards 4 hours. If I reboot twice in a row without correcting the time, time will be off by 8 hours. Time zone is set correctly (Eastern Time). "Synchronize date and time over the network" is unchecked.
Since the difference between GMT and Eastern time is 4 hours, there appears to be some confusion over that but I can't find anything in the "Date & Time" app relative to that to try to play with to see if I can correct this. II do remember a similar issue many releases ago but I can't remember how it was dealt with.
I'm trying to develop a system that records different desktops at the same time. I have developed a audio-videochat system and I want to be able to record what happens in every room, so my starting idea was:
1) Open a graphic terminal for each room. I have succeeded using vncserver :NumberDisplay. 2) In each terminal, run firefox at each URL. I succeeded too because firefox lets me specify in wich NumberDisplay I want it to be open 3) In each terminal, run recordmydesktop to record. It allows too to specify the NumberDisplay.
My problem now is that it seems that the sound card is "shared", so the sounds recorded in the display 1 includes the sound generated in all others firefox windows. I havnt found an analogy for the sound as the display is for the graphics.
I have thought some ideas but I havnt been able to materialize anyone. Im tried to create virtual sound cards and specify one for each vncserver, I tried to redirect the sound of each firefox window to one "channel" (read firefox delegates the sound so that might not be an option), I read many things about pulseaudio, jack and several stuff that I just havnt been able to work.
