Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area
Both, the network manager and volume control are mentioned in the "Start-up programs"

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?

Jan 16, 2010installed F12 and noticed that the volume control applet is now all Pulseaudio rubbish, not Alsa like gmixer used to be. So now I don't seem to be able to mute my speakers when I'm using my headset, which in F10 I could do by just muting LFE/Center.Note I don't want the speakers to be disabled when I have the headphones plugged in (like Jack does) I just want to be able to control volume of the mixer channels individually - as sometimes I'll be playing music through the speakers and will receive a Skype call and want to mute the music, but also don't want the Skype sound coming out of the speakers - just the headphones.
I've tried setting up 4.1+input, 5.1+input, 4.0+input etc; but for some reason, even though the PulseAudio mixer thing has 5 individual sliders, they do nothing as they "jump" back to 100% when you slide them - even with the channels unlocked. gmixer and alsamixer do the job, but pulseaudio is the applet and only seems to control the master volume, not the individual channels. Any ideas - or perhaps a way to make gnome-volume-control revert back to actually being gmixer?

However, when I try mount those folders this error occurs (OSX): 'Volume X could not be mounted'.I checked that smb as wells as xinetd is running and that the firewall ports are open (also tried deactivating the firewall with no success).

Whilst transfer rate from the server 16 MB/s
If I mount it from Places>connect to server. Both to and from speeds are 16 MB/s. Why is it so slow when mounted through fstab?

Mar 2, 2010I had trouble connecting to a wireless network with openSUSE, so I tried the YAST network manager to see if that fixed it. Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.

Feb 5, 2011For some reason, I can't get network-manager to appear on the task bar so that I can edit the connections. Also, network manager doesn't appear in system/prefs menu. if I try typing at the terminal 'sudo nm-applet" it says "An instance of nm-applet is already running. ** (nm-applet:9074): WARNING **: <WARN> constructor(): Couldn't initialize the D-Bus manager." If I inspect the system | preferences | startup apps , network manager is selected with the command "nm-applet --sm-disable".
I can see "network-manager" shown in /etc/inid.d but "sudo network-manager" gives "command not found". Anyone know what I have to do to get it working ? Uninstalling and re-installing hasn't worked. I have tried installing Wicd and that shows Lan & wireless connections ok but it *doesn't show my usb data-dongle* which I've just got working using the very useful application UsbModem_Switch by Draisberghof .
So the workaround for me is to call that connection manually ( if I need to use the usb data-card dongle ) with the command "sudo usb_modeswitch -W -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/0471:1210". However, if I can get the network-manager applet thing to show up and use that it would be easier. Or is there a better alternative to Wicd which can handle usb data-card modem connections ?

Mar 28, 2010On a small network i have 3 WinXP computers and i've just installed a two new ones with Win7 pre-installed. As server i'm running OpenSuSE 10.3 and Samba with only one share. As i mount it to WinXP computers all get same volume serial number:

Volume Serial Number is 8CD5-975C
...and all Win7 computers get a diffrent one:

Volume in drive V is AppDrive
Volume Serial Number is A0D3-975C
We use application witch somehow only works when one/same volume serial number on a mounted drive is used.

since the Ubuntu pc is (almost) always turned on it would be no profit to have it mount the Win PC at startup, indeed I could have a cron.hourly script to check if the Laptop is connected to the network and to back it up once a day, thus by checking a small text file with written the date of the last backup BTW how do I check if the Win PC is connected to the network? How do I mount it via samba? Do you suggest to backup stuff simply moving files, via tar (as I already do with my web host) or with rsync?

May 23, 2011After update 11.2 to 11.4 copy jobs from netware 5.1 volume to local disk linux system does crash after a couple of seconds. I might have to do if there a allot of small files in that job. If happend system reboot is required because unmount netware volume nor delete copied files to the local linux system is not possible. Recompiling ncpfs package not possible because error free source package ncpfs version 2.2.6 might not be availble.
