I'm looking for a way to get a Mac OS X style dock on Xubuntu, I tried cairo and it was ok but I just got a black border around the dock which was annoying. And I tried looking up how to fix it and most places recommend turning on compositing which I had already had on in xfce. I'm not necessarily looking for animated stuff, just an icon based dock like that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone knew if there is an KDE-style app launcher for XFCE, preferably in the repos. I'm using KDE on my main system, and would love to have the same ALT+Space launcher on my laptop. Only without having to install (and run) all of the KDE libraries.
Closest I came was a couple of Mac-OS style docks.
I use a few KDE apps in gnome, and I like them to look as in KDE with elegant qt style buttons and controls,however they look like whatever but what qt applications look like.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Creative ZEN Style 300 player is not recognized in Ubuntu 10.10 through media players (Rhythembox, Banshee, Gnomad2...etc) . it is recognized correctly as a removable media like any flash drive ,but not as a media player though.
I've searched a the issue and found some solutions to other Creative ZEN models ,but none worked for me.

Several times now I've for some reason had a different style on my desktop when I boot until I power the computer down. Frames still look the same but applications look different and the panel at the top changes. I tried changing the appearance but the frames are the only things that change. I've attached some screen shots. It should look just like it does after a fresh install.

I went to preferences>appearance>themes>customize>pointer, and changed it back to DMZ White, yet the pointer still looks like oxy-white. I tried it with all of the different pointer options, but none of them will override oxy-white.

Anyways here's the issue, some windows File Menu bar is like the classic GTK style and doesn't look anything like the other windows, even though its an updated version. For example this happens on Gnome Terminal (3.0) and Empathy (3.0) and Nautilus (3.0) and a few others, but Firefox is fine, etc.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I go to the appearance preferences in Ubuntu 10.04 w/GNOME and try to select a cursor different from the default, nothing happens, the cursor refuses to change. Logging out and in doesn't work. Over the weeks I've played around with this machine a bit, installing and uninstalling various DEs such as Kubuntu and LXDE; I have a feeling something messed up my cursor config while I was changing stuff, but I don't know what or where. Is there any quick way to troubleshoot why the cursor isn't changing?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have deleted the mime directory under /usr/share/icons/Humanity, and many files' icons have changed to the gnome style. Then I restored the mime directory back, and typed command sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity. But my action doesn't work. The files' icons remains the gnome style.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn Windows, you can go to a file's permissions and it's clearly stated who can do what. You can choose between individual users or groups such as 'everyone' or certain types of users such as 'domain users'. You could create a clear cut list of every single user/group on the system and what their permissions for a file are and have it neatly displayed in a list.On Unix, we have octal permissions and sticky bits. I understand the whole concept of rwxrwxrwx (777). The first three are what the file owner can do, the second is what the main group the user belongs to can do, and the third is what other users can do.
But, when you view a file's permissions you are only getting the permissions as they apply to the user that owns the file. For example, as I understand it, if I viewed a file that only the root user had rwx permissions on and everyone else could only read. The permissions would show up as rwxr--r-- (744). But, those same permissions would show up to any user as 744 as well. Since the last 3 characters are what applies to "other users" (pretty vague). How would someone know what users in particular those permissions apply to? There could be one "other user" that can rwx that file and another "other user" that can't.Also, why just stop with the main group? What about other groups? A the user Foo's main group he belongs to might be Foo. But he could also belong to the groups Boo and Zoo, which belong to other users and would give him full rwx permissions over Boo and Zoo's files just as if he were Boo or Zoo.
Then you have the whole sticky bit thing that makes it so that files can be owned by the same person and at the same time be made use of (to varying degrees) by other users. To chmod the UID you'd chmod 2777 or for GID 4777 (just an an example). I did this for a file and it allowed a standard user account who was previously unable to run the command to be able to run it. But, how can that work when I didn't anywhere specify what particular user (or groups of users) that sticky bit applies to?
I'm confused about this whole thing to the point that I'm not even sure exactly what questions I should be asking or even if my examples are even 100% correct. I just sort of ranted about some specific things that floated to the top of my head. Permissions are easy to understand when your running a Unix-like system on a single user desktop. Because the only users/groups you have are root, the single user, and various system users/groups that you don't really need to worry about. So a file with rwxr--r-- means that only the Root user (not even members of his group) can edit the file and you can't unless you use sudo. Because the "other user" in the last 3 characters always just means you. But, things seem to get a whole lot more complicated when you start adding in multiple users. Can someone explain this or link to a "for dummies" article that can explain all of this to me in a way that someone who's used to Windows style permissions can make a connection between the two OS families and their way of handling these things?

I'm curious if anyone has made any of the above work under Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
The Bayer Contour USB plugs directly into the USB port so no proprietary cable is necessary. Their listed specs show that the software works under Windows and OS X, so maybe their headed in the right direction.
If I can access the data on the meter and make sense out of it, I should be able to at least put it in a spreadsheet even if I have to copy and paste or manually enter the data.
So, if anyone has made either of the above work, or knows of a brand name meter that will work, it would be helpful.

Since Unity and Gnome 3, the desktop interfaces are really changed. I really like the Gnome 2 (classic) interface. I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.
Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.
For the 2nd time in a year. I really need v3.xx because 2.4 breaks formatting when opening v3 files. Why did i go back to 2.4 ? 3.1 was slower with calc. Now I'm stuck with 2.4 because of the ongoing stupidity in backports.org.

I'm upgraded F13 to F14 and now all the GTK+ apps have this "white end" style in the menu. My question is, is that the new GTK+ style or is something wrong? [URL] I'm using KDE in F14 with QtCurve style for GTK+ apps.

follow the instructions in the 'Install' document closely, i found after installing a different package manager called 'Yum Extender' which made things simpler for me, i installed the 'Gnome tweak tool', 'gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme'' and 'gnome-shell-extension-common'', but i also had to install the latest 'Murrine GTK2 engine' for the 'Zukitwo' theme to be recognised in the 'Gnome tweak tool', the location i chose to copy the Zukitwo folders to was.. /home/your username/.theme I'd like to now change just the style of the Fedora 15 login window(as in username/password popup box), but without changing my background wallpaper that being used, i have found a 'login' box style from a website below which i'd like to use.
