Ubuntu :: Stable Are The Updated Versions?

Jan 15, 2010

Trying to get the thunderbird localization working I briefly checked thunderbird 3, to see if it had the same issue. Now, the problem is, I accidentally installed new versions of Firefox 3.5 and XULrunner. If I remove them, then many other packets get removes due to dependencies. Same if I try to force version. If I simply remove the repos, then synaptic reports them as broken. Is there anything I can do to solve this? How stable are the updated versions? How often do they get updated?

Fedora :: What Is The Timing On Updated RPMs For New BOINC Versions

I've just recently started using Fedora again and have a question about BOINC.I see that Fedora 13 is using 6.10.45, but the latest recommended release is 6.10.56.What is the timing on updated RPMs for new BOINC versions? Or is there a guide to updating manually, which I've been unable to locate?

Ubuntu :: Difference Between LTS Versions And Other Versions?

Jun 30, 2011

I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.

So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS

Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Less Stable Than 9.X?

May 25, 2010

I've never really had a problem with ubuntu 9.4 and 9.10.In 9.10 I even used KDE 4 and even that went quite well (for being KDE 4). I have never had a freeze or crash in Ubuntu 9.4 and 9.10, and had been using those for 9 months or so. But ever since I upgraded to 10.4, many things went wrong. I think it's less than a month ago since I upgraded. Remember that I've never had freezes or crashes in 9.4 and 9.10.

Now so far I've had:

-2 times suddenly the mouse lags and I have to reboot

-1 time the screen went black and I had to reboot

-1 time KDE4 was acting strange, constantly giving messages about that it was going to disable composite rendering due to being slow. Yes, the system was slow indeed. Had to reboot.

-less stable KDE4.4 than the KDE4.3 of ubuntu 9.10: the new KDE4 version did more weird things like moving around icons when never asked for and being generally unstable

-many, very many, problems and obvious slowness due to nepomuk and virtuoso-t
-I installed KDE 3.5 after the KDE4 problems above happened. But in KDE 3.5 I've ALSO had mouse lag (after pressing "ok" on a window about installing updates).

-I use this OS mainly for Java development. The upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 ruined all JDK 1.6 related packages and provided no easy way to install them, so I had to do it manually.

With Ubuntu 9.10, working productively went much better than with 10.4.I mean, ever since Windows 98, I've never seen anything as unstable as KDE4.4 on Ubuntu 10.4! I mean it, with what I've encountered, this comparison is really fair imho.Did anyone else experience that Ubuntu 10.4 is less stable than 9.X, or am I the only one?

Ubuntu :: Is 10.10 A Stable Version

Nov 10, 2010

Why does update manager doesn't tell me that ubuntu 10.10 is out? I'm running 10.04.1 LTS. I have to do alt-F2 "update-manager -d" in order to see the 10.10 message even if ubuntu is config to notice me of normal releases.And then just before the update begins, the official readme says that 10.10 is (at the moment) a RELEASE CANDIDATE version. Just an old not-updated readme?Why does Ubuntu official home page annunces 10.10 as a stable version?

Ubuntu :: Firefox 4 Stable In Repos?

Is this in a PPA yet? I see a tarball on the Mozilla site but hate tarball installs if I can do it through a package. I just ran the Update Manager and the Firefox (Namoroka) link in my menu is 3.6.x.

I'm running Minefield right now from the bleeding-edge repos and would prefer to switch to FF4 stable... is there an (easy) way to do that and keep my settings and add-ons?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wpa2-aes - Can't Get A Stable Connection

May 16, 2010

Does anyone have a way to use this type of encryption? I have read many posts but have not gotten a solution yet. I am trying to get this to work at a friend's house. I know the SSID and the super-long ascii code (with symbols?). gnome nm and wicd have been useless. I have been connecting to my school's wpa2 using wpa_supplicant + dhclient directly, so I tried adding it in there:

network={
ssid="name"
scan_ssid=0
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP
group=CCMP
psk="horribly long thing"
}

What happens is a string of connects and then immediate disconnects when runnign wpa_supplicant. It says "CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - disconnect event - remove keys" then starts all over. Can't get a stable connection but I must be close?

Ubuntu :: Stable On Livecd Crashes After Installation

May 22, 2011

I can boot off of the Natty LiveCD, run it for days fine. Install, everything's smooth. Boot up and run some updates. That's where it hung the first time around. Display froze, cursor and keyboard would not respond, audio was stuck looping. This was a pain because it corrupted some stuff with apt. Any point from power-on onward is "eligible" for a crash. It seems to be random, but there also seems to be a trend of it crashing earlier on as time proceeds. This is a custom built computer, and I've tried other Linux distros like Debian and 9.04 UNR, they all crash somewhere in the install. Leaves me thinking it's a hardware fault, but why would it run perfectly fine off of CD but die when installed then?

[code]....

Ubuntu Security :: 64 Bit Kernel Would Be More Stable Secure And Reliable Than A 32 Bit One ?

Jul 7, 2010

Since all what I can find on google is about benchmarks I'd like to ask you if a 64 bit kernel would be more stable , secure and reliable than a 32 bit one.

I ask this question because apparently the 64 bit instruction set offers more advanced security features (i'm saying apparently because I'm not able to give details since it been a really fast read) which would be used by a 64 bit Operating System (Apple also stated that 64 bit applications are less likely to be "attacked").

I have to assume that a 32 bit one does not use them right? Should I stick to 64 bit? (to be honest that "not for everyday" thing on ubuntu download pages made me wonder lol, because since intrepid i ALWAYS used the 64 bit version)

My "lowest" computer has a pentium processor (1,6 ghz dual core) according to lshw I have NX enabled and my ram is 2GB (might seem useless using a 64bit kernel on 2 GB but i'm more concerned about security now)
