Ubuntu :: Files Left Behind After Uninstall?

Jan 3, 2010

I'm a recent migrant to Ubuntu from windows xp, and I definitely love linux. but, after years of windoze, I'm left with a few questions. today I tried installed kde, but it didn't work on my hardware, so I uninstalled it. i also tried to put google earth on my system, but it kept crashing so I removed it. after removing kde I had to reinstall a couple programs. all said, after doing all that, do I need to scan my system to remove trash files, or is that not a problem in linux?I'm also having some problems finding software after I've installed it in synaptic. when the package shows to be installed, I can't find any way to launch it through the menus. I don't have that problem if I use the ubuntu software center.

Ubuntu :: Uninstall NoScript So No Trace Is Left?

Dec 14, 2010

I installed NoScript and Allowed some pages. I clicked RESET and then uninstalled NoScript via the Firefox AdOns window. But when I "reinstall" it it still has sites from my previous browsing Allowed plus settings from my old install. How do I completely erase all its settings so that when I reinstall it it is like it is a fresh/brand new install? I used to be able to do this with CCleaner for Windows.

I uninstalled Google Earth and the "grey" icon remains no matter what I do. Also I had wine to run an MS application I uninstalled wine, before uninstalling the application. The icons remain, do I need to re-install wine again, uninstall the application then uninstall wine? The file that held the application I deleted, first because I had a brain fade.

Ubuntu :: Files Get Truncated On Write When No Space Left

Aug 3, 2010

If I run low on free space, and I/system need to write something, then the files are just truncated. With no way to revert to their previous content.

First I installed the Windows on the VirtualBox, it sucked up all free space, so I couldn't even login to the system afterwards.

Then I, once again, silently ran out of free space, and my php editor broke. Later I discovered that it tried to write its config files, but failed, truncating them all. I lost a half a year of configurations, custom color scheme and custom code snippets.

Then one day the system just froze. Later I understood, there wasn't enough free space for it to run.

Today I was working on my php script, for like the second day, when, again, free space ran out, so with another file-save, I got a wonderfully impressing blank php-file. It was auto-reloaded from the external change, which was failure to write to file, obviously, so no ctrl-z worked, leaving me with two days work wasted and an urge to hit the monitor

My questions are:
1 How can this be fixed? Besides the obvious awesome fix "watch your free space, buddy".
2 Could somebody explain why these sorts of things happen, just so I know why the ultra-safe and durable 'nix operating system wants to destroy itself sometimes?
3 Anyone else encountered this issue?

Ubuntu :: Mouse Intermittently Double Left Clicks / When Single Left Click

Jun 15, 2011

I'm not sure if I should post this question in "hardware & laptops", or "Desktop Environments", because this is a hardware problem on a desktop computer.

Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread. As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.

Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.

Ubuntu :: Uninstall ATI Drivers And Reinstall Original Files

Jun 12, 2011

I am running a recently installed minimal install. I am having some fun building the system up but trying to keep things slim. I have installed the ATI catalyst drivers working from the tutorial here under 'Installing the Restricted Drivers Manually': [URL]... After successfully getting the ATI driver running, I realise I really don't need or want it and am wanting to uninstall it completely and return the config to the way it was. Some of that I can do with the aid of some of the links I have found but installing the ATI drivers no doubt killed some of the packages that were there in the first place (graphics was fine in the first place incidentally). Question: What might these squashed packages be so I can reinstall them and have graphics setup as it was before I installed the ATI drivers and how can I remove all trace of the ATI drivers?

General :: Combine / Merge Left And Right Video Files?

Jan 11, 2011

How can I join the two parts of a stereoscopic movie to get a side-by-side one?

I can expand the left file, that way all I'll need is to paste the second one on top of it, with something like this:

mencoder left-file.mkv -o side-by-side.avi -oac copy -ovc lavc -of avi -vf scale=1280:720,expand=-1280:0:0:0 -sws 3 -lavcopts vbitrate=16000

Any idea which tool should I use on a Linux system?

Programming :: Implement Left-associative Operators In Parser That Does Not Allow Left Recursion?

Jan 20, 2011

The first is about implementing function calls. The way I currently have it is that functions are called with a C++ std::vector of nodes as the parameters. How would I turn a comma-seperated list of expressions into a C++ vector in the grammar?Second, how do you implement left-associative operators in a parser that does not allow left recursion?

And third, what would be the best internal representation of integers? A C++ int seems simplest, but limited. Using GMP seems more versatile, but I'm afraid it might seriously slow down the interpreter compared to C++ ints.

Ubuntu :: "Swap Left Alt And Left Win" Keyboard Layout Works Intermittently?

Jul 10, 2011

When I swap my left alt with my left win key using the gnome keyboard layout options, the swap only works intermittently. I have an aluminum Apple keyboard with no numpad. No matter what layout options I choose, I can't seem to get it working.I also have the same setup on my laptop and work desktop and it works without issue. I've ensured my .Xmodmap doesn't exist. When I say "works intermittently" I mean when I'm trying to use "alt+b, alt+f" navigation in emacs or bash, it doesn't work but if I click around a bit then try again, it works. Also, I use alt+arrows to switch workspaces and that always works

Ubuntu :: Right-Left Click On Touchpad?

Jun 30, 2010

I finally got 10.04 installed and I am loving it so far! Very quick! But I do have some nuance 'problems'. Here is one for I can not find a solution. In previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to click on my touchpad with two fingers that replicated a right-left click to open a link in a new tab. Now it raises a popup menu in the browser asking how to open the link.

I have tried this in Chrome, Opera and Firefox and have the same issue in all browsers, which leads me to believe this may be a Gnome setting. How do I change this behaviour? There was nothing in the mouse preferences to change this.

Ubuntu :: Left Shift Key Is Ignored For Some Characters

Jan 19, 2011

I've been having a strange problem with my keyboard lately. certain characters aren't capitalized when I hold the left shift. Right shift covers these buttons, but then ignores some itself.I know that it used to be fine, as I set a password on my router with a capital letter which then did not work, and in my AWN terminal, I would use ctrl+shift+v to paste in lines of code.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, on a Compaq Altec Lansing. For a demonstartion, here is the alphabet as typed holding the shift keys.

Left Shift
ABcDEFGHIJKLmNOPQRSTUvWxYz
Right Shift
ABCDeFGHiJKLMNopqrSTuVwXYZ
Both Shifts
A B ce D ce F G H ,i J K L mu N .o /p zq vr S T mu vr xw xw Y zq

Also, I noticed now that I cannot use the right shift with the Left arrow key to highlight text...
