I've destroyed my desktop.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and I would much like to uninstall (including any config files) and reinstall the windows manager.
Is there a set of commands I can run to achieve this?
I have ovpn configuration files for Windows from SwitchVPN. They do not provide configuration files for GNU/Linux. They said I can extract the certificate and key files from the ovpn files, but I'm confused about how to do that.First of all, I don't know which Authentication Type to choose: "Certificates (TLS)," "Password," "Password with Certificates (TLS)" or "Static Key."
Second, I don't know what to put where from the ovpn file. I see a <ca> � </ca> section and a <tls-auth> </tls-auth> section, but I don't see how those correspond to any of the Authentication Types. "Certificates (TLS)" and "Password with Certificates (TLS)" require two certificates and a key, "Password," requires one certificate and no key, and "Static Key" requires a key and key direction but no certificate. When I connect to SwitchVPN in Windows, it asks for a user name and password.Here's an example of the ovpn files (certificate and key contents removed):

I am running a recently installed minimal install. I am having some fun building the system up but trying to keep things slim. I have installed the ATI catalyst drivers working from the tutorial here under 'Installing the Restricted Drivers Manually': [URL]... After successfully getting the ATI driver running, I realise I really don't need or want it and am wanting to uninstall it completely and return the config to the way it was. Some of that I can do with the aid of some of the links I have found but installing the ATI drivers no doubt killed some of the packages that were there in the first place (graphics was fine in the first place incidentally). Question: What might these squashed packages be so I can reinstall them and have graphics setup as it was before I installed the ATI drivers and how can I remove all trace of the ATI drivers?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI built out a headless VMWare v2.0.2 Server. I managed to work all that out but now I'm having some trouble getting my virtual machines on the server. I installed both proftpd and vsftpd but neither server lets me log in. 'Login Failed' is always returned (using the only account on the machine - created during the install).
So I decided to install samba, but samba chokes on large files. I tried over and over again to copy a 10GB VMDK file over samba and it gets to 5% or so and suddenly tells me there is a network problem and dies (which there is no network problem as these machines are all on the same subnet plugged into the same gigabit switch).
So now I'm back to FTP. Unfortunately when I ran apt-get remove proftpd, it didn't remove any of the config files (/etc/proftpd/*) so I manually deleted them. Now when I try to reinstall the FTP servers they won't start because the config files are gone. What's the apt-get syntax to completely uninstall these servers as if they had never been installed so I can start clean? I really don't want to have to do a complete system re-install just to fix 300KB FTP servers.
I've deleted /etc/apache2 and did run:

to get the default config back.
But starting the server via:

The funny thing is that the exact same definition is in a debian lenny server config on another server. So why did this install a not working config?
I just removed apache2 via:

sudo aptitude remove apache2
sudo rm -r /etc/apache2
and reinstalled it via:

sudo aptitude install apache2
which also did not fix the config bug?
For testing I installed apache2 on another ubuntu 9.10 and did just copy the folder /etc/apache2 to my local installation - this fixed the problem. Still, why cant I reinstall apache2 with a working config?
My Ubuntu Remex Notebook had been install in windows7 by wubi, I want to reinstall it to solve some problems, but how to save my personal files in Downlads folder?

I recently installed opensuse 11.2 on my laptop which also had windows vista and windows 7, i created a new partition and the installation went smoothly, after i went to boot back into windows 7 i got a blue screen of death, strangely vista boots perfectly.I could just reinstall windows 7 but its a pain to reinstall all my programs and such
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm on Slackware 13 and use XFCE (no KDE or QT) as my DE and Exaile as my music player. I try and install all my software using slackbuilds. Recently I came to know that Exaile 0.3.1.0 was out and so decided to upgrade from my current 0.3.0.1 . So I downloaded the source package and the slackbuild, and after changing the version number in the Slackbuild script, went ahead with the installation. The install went fine but exaile wont start up as the new version required a newer version of gtk+.
Since, I was not ready to invest my time in that, I uninstalled the newer version through pkgtool. I had the precompiled library left from my previous 0.3.0.1 install so, I installed it using installpkg. Now the problem is that when try to launch exaile, the splash screen shows up, but quickly disappears (this was also happening with the newer version, when it required newer gtk+). The error I am getting is:

I was having issues with the mic or line in on my onboard sound card, while trying to get my tvtuner patched in, later I gave OSS a try, I could not get it to work and decided to go back to Alsa, now my soundcard is not functioning.I have followed quite a few different guides, one of which is the sticky, please forgive me for not remembering which guides. I'm going nuts over this.As you can see below it looks like it is still using the oss driver.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:

I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.
So I recently installed openSUSE KDE (latest build, don't know the number?). total linux noob, been a windows user all my life. right now i'm dual-booting between win 7 and opensuse KDE. i originally alotted for a parsley 10gb only to use as a backup whenever my windows inevitably starts having problems and i have no access or means to repair it/ use as a secure place to scan my windows partition and external drives for viruses. i want to expand my opensuse partition.
so my problem is this: i have a 200gb windows partition, a 15 gb partition (U) i set up to do file swapping cross-os (which i couldnt figure out how to work, btw. formatted it in FAT32). and my 10 gb suse partition (O). i tried using the built-in KDE partition manager to shrink or completely do away with U, and expand the suse partition. the problem is my suse partition is ecapsulated by an extended partition, whatever that is, and suse has its own 1.5 gb "swap" partition. after shrinking U i tried expanding O, but it said i was already at max size. tried expanding extended, also didnt work, same goes for the 1.5 gb suse swap partition.
i read in another post that i could do the resizing via some sort of bootable disc, the only problem is that i have no access to cd or dvd blanks, and i have no usb thumb drives just 2 external hd's - 1tb and 250gb. so how can i go about expanding my opensuse partition? the easiest way i could think of is to just reformat/repartition from windows, and reinstall opensuse from my boot dvd. only problem with that is i cant SEE my suse partition from windows...
i imagine i could also just boot from the dvd and run the installer again, and use the partitioner built into the installer, but i didn't really feel comfortable with it the first time around. im know my way around a computer but all of a sudden it blindsided me with a ton of options i know nothing about, it was a little too complicated.
I use slackware 13.1-current on desktop with 4gb ram, nvidia geforce 210, and AMD cpu.
I have problem with my X starting using 40-50 MB of RAM and after some hours suddenly rises up to 400-500 MB. I have tried KDE ( with and without desktop effects ), LXDE, 3 different nvidia drivers ( the one made from the slackbuilds ) but no luck.
I decided at last to use the default slackware's driver. I uninstalled the nvidia driver and do startx, but it says code...
I have no idea about GPU and drivers, it was a mistake to install a driver for my nvidia just to have desktop effects. I just want to bring the things back as at the beginning of the systems installation and the default drivers.
Do you have any idea how to do it?
I seem to have lost my show desktop widget. There is just the red x as shown in the screen cap. I did try to uninstall and reinstall it but no luck. Does anyone know how i can get it back?

Is there a way to not use the "#include" directive to include the entire header, but rather to just load only the stuff I need? For example, I just want to include 'sprintf' and 'printf' from stdio.h, not the entire header. Is this possible? Or am I misunderstanding some fundamental element here?

The HD has been partitioned so that the computer can run Red Hat Scientific Linux. Using Grub I can dual boot to either Windows 7 or Linux on start up. I want a simple way of backing up the entire contents of my HD (both partitions - everything) - so that in the event of my laptop being damaged I can reconstruct my set up and data as before with all my files and settings in both Windows 7 and Linux intact. Is there a simple program that will enable me to copy everything to an external HD for back up. Can anyone recommend a package that will do this?

This server will have Vsftp, VPN, Samba stuff , many other added packages +many printers, many users + data. I know I can use tar for the data /u no problem. 1. I was testing tar on the /home directory on a few user directories. I then created a new directory and did a restore of the users directories on it. I noticed the /home/user owner and group were root. The files in each directory remained the same. This gave me concern. If I had a crash and had to restore these to a new HD. I would have to change these, what else would I need to change? 2. Since I have many config files, how do I back up them? I know I can do a dump, but then users shouldn't be on the system. The system files will change as they add users, printers, etc, and asking users to not work, is not really an option while dump is running. I thought I could do a tar on whole system. (cron late at night .. not as many users) Then in event of crash of HD.
1. Boot from live cd
2. format the new drive
3. tar back in the whole system
Will this work right? Is there something I am missing?
If I type 'grep alias .bashrc' a whole load of stuff comes up. However, if I type 'grep alias *' nothing comes up. Is there some switch for including 'hidden' files - like the -a switch for ls?

Mine MID is Meamo Linux device. When I mean audio, I talking about whatever is coming out mine PC sound card at any point (music, video's audio, XP sounds clicks, etc). Also, the audio MUST BE live, aka no delay between between computer.Basically, the idea to is to "send/stream" audio to other PC over wifi/network so all the sounds are sync. Sort of like a whole house audio system, but one that uses computers so I don't need to buy any additional equipment. Also, it would be nice if the client software worked on other OS, like Linux.I have been looking some software solutions with no luck. I tried UPnp (shoutcast/Icecast) servers, however all of them have 1 Sec to 10 second of delay.Again, I am looking for something instant.I have also looked at pulse audio, however the setup seem too complicated for Windows especially.

I have downloaded the package to reinstall it (Im writing now from a friend's pc) without sucess, because network manager needs other packages who are supossed to be downloaded from the internet while the installation, but I do not have Internet!
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 bit. I deleted network manager so that I could install wicd but did not install wicd first so now I have no internet. I have read several post and the answer for me is not there.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.
"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?
