Ubuntu :: Explain The Multiple Firefox Default Folders?

Mar 14, 2010

Under /home/username/.mozilla I have a default folder which contains folders named "aqeif3n4.slt" and "cache". Under /home/username/.mozilla/Firefox I also have more default folders such as "6ajy4rl7.default", "ad2fpe1q.default" and "ivkrjhk8.default". I do not understand what the default folder under /home/username/.mozilla is for. I am sure that the .default folders under /home/username/.mozilla/Firefox are my Firefox files (duh!) but why are there more than one? Is a new one created every so often so you have copies from past time periods? Or what?

I have a set of folders in some directory /home/dir, and I'd like to generate zip files for the contents of each folder separately. I'm wondering if there's a quick way to do this with a one-liner, or what the bash script would be.

Directory structure: /home/dir/first/second/thirdand I want three files, first.zip, second.zip, and third.zip. I know zip isn't the best format, but these are for distribution to users on Windows machines and I'd prefer to keep them in the zip format.

Server :: Multiple Folders To A Single Path

Mar 27, 2010

We have too many audio Paths, for each user have one. We would like to create a unique folder to Read in network.

For example:

The idea is Mapping all folders to the path /pub/Music in server, so all user can access all music online in the server.

Very Well. How we can do it?

And when pc1 and pc2 have the same subfolder, like Beatles, and in the subfolder have different folders ( PC1-Beatles/Revolver ) (PC2-Beatles/Habbey_Road) or The same folder (PC1-Beatles/The_Mistery_Magic_Tour) (PC3-Beatles/The_Mistery_Magic_Tour)...

Is there a way to contemplate this issue?

Debian :: KDE Default Folders Missing?

Sep 10, 2010

Once I setup KDE on Testing and opened Dolphin I reallzed there were no default folders (Documents, Desktop, Music...) and was wondering if this is normal. Other distros like Kubuntu and PCLinuxOS (what a name) have these and I was wondering if they added them or they are part of KDE. Gnome has them on debian but not KDE.
If they are part of KDE and I'm missing them and shouldn't, would manually adding them as I did require mentioning them elsewhere on the system or do applications and such assume they are there?

Ubuntu Servers :: Default File Permissions For System Folders

May 5, 2010

I had a major raid event recently which caused my Ubuntu 9.04 server to recover part of its file journal on the system partition. This caused some of the file permissions to go all funny and I now need to change them manually.

What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/

The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.

General :: How To Explain Difference Between Open Source And Freeware?

Oct 26, 2010

1) A 13-years old boy wasn't impressed by KDE 4.x. Its own Window$ looks also nice and pretty and have similar functionality.

2) Open Source? How to explain a difference between open source and freeware? Do we really benefit running open source programs instead of freeware? Most of us will never read a line from a source. We want, we require easily accesible binaries.

So why a common window$ user find worthy to run Linux? What can Linux offer? Linux should be as different from window$ as it is possible.

3) Twm window manager is definitely something strange - in the way the vi editor for notepad users. Twm is for some reasons better than any other wm. I started both kde desktop and xfce desktop under twm. Both desktops can be iconyfied. It is your choice which at this moment you prefer. But you can work with both. Full democracy. No more discussions which is better.

4) When finally developers of KDE, GNOME will make these desktop almost perfect they will be obsolete. In fact they are today obsolete. It is about 20 years working in the same manner. Windows, buttons, mouse's click - I think it's enough. At least I am really bored.

5) NextGen UI. Not GUI but UI. A core of the nextgen UI will be an AI
engine. Also see p. 4, we may think about VUI - virtual environements,
you can run all your preferable GUI simultaneously. Or any other today predefined UI (eg. cli).

6) What about windows (parts of a graphical screen)? Nothing. If AI will be in the core you will need windows only for watching video and playing games.

Finall remarks: It is not a project only an idea. My intuition tells me that there is a time for changes. Time for swimming in deep water.

Fedora :: Bash Script Symbolic Link Multiple Folders?

Dec 23, 2009

I've been using fedora for quite some time now but I've never really written any bash scripts so I'm new to this. Basically what I'm trying to do is create symbolic links of movies that I have organized in this fashion:

Code:
Movies/A
Movies/B
Movies/C
etc.

I basically want to create an "ALL" folder that has links to all the movies in their designated folders. I have created somewhat of a bash script but it does not work.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
cd '/media/Videos/Movies'
for file_name in `ls *`
do
ln -s "$file_name" All/$file_name
done

I don't think its creating the right link to the movies and it is not taking into account the fact that some of the movies have spaces in their names.

General :: Glftpd Multiple Or Non-default Directory?

Mar 18, 2011

I've had enough fighting my glftpd installation by myself, here's the thing.. I got an glftpd server running nicely and all, I've been using the default glftp/site/ directory as incoming/storage/file-folder. However the disk space on my OS-disk is running low and I was hoping to expand the storage with another disk..

I formatted a ext3 disk just as any other and mounted it to a /media/diskdirectory but now what?.. at first I was hoping to merge the disk so that newer files would be stored on the new hard drive while keeping the old ones in place but that seemed hard to achieve so I copied the entire /site/ folder to the new disk so that I could point glftpd to use that directory instead and here's my problem. Simply trying to edit the glftpd.conf or site command change homedir did not work, I have tried mounting, mount --bind, linking(?) all of which without great results.

The mount --bind thing worked though my uploaded files were written to both directories(both hard drives), the old glftpd/site/ and the new mount --bind:ed /media/disk/site directory.Basically I want to use a hard drive that is not the OS drive as the default download/upload directory in glftpd how do I accomplish that?

Of course I tried searching the forums and the glftpd resources available and all I found was an old thread from 2006 that didn't get answered.[URL]..

Security :: Default Group For Multiple Developers?

Feb 9, 2010

OK I have multiple developers on a system and I have setup a area on the web server where they all should have access to and all that fun stuff. Now I do not want to setup these developers default group to be this single group cause they could be members of multiple groups...

IE:

/var/www/cust1 - Group Cust1
/var/www/cust2 - Group Cust2
etc...

Then say for the developers:

dev1 - member of Cust1 & Cust2 - Default group is dev1
dev2 - member of Cust2 - Default group is dev2
dev3 - member of Cust1 - Default group is dev3

So when they go into say /var/www/cust1 only dev1 & dev3 should have access to modify files and when they create/edit files the owner should be the user and the group I want it to be Cust1. Then when going to say the Cust2 area new files and stuff have Cust2 group access with RWX.

Is this possible for users to just use their normal accounts, or will I need to look are setting up "project" accounts where they can su into say dev1cust1 account which will have the default group of Cust1?

how you all handle this and what I might be able to do so that the permissions stick.
