I get errors that look something like this:

I just updated to emacs23 from emacs22 (sudo apt-get install emacs2). I find that I now have a problem with org mode structured lists not appearing. A single asteriks on a line by itself no longer appears highlighted and no longer collapses and expands using the tab key.

I downloaded emacs, and wanted to use php-mode, so i downloaded something called php-mode. I would have posted a link, but this forum restricts me from doing that.
Inside are a bunch of files, and no readme. I tried to ask google how to install this, but found nothing that made sense to me (i am still a n00b).

I would like to delete a directory in emacs' dired-mode.
I mark the directory with the "d" key, and then hit "x" to deleted flagged.
I then get the following error:
Is there any way to get emacs to delete the directory and stop its whining?
I want to use Emacs abbrev-mode to be able to replace certain programming symbols with their Unicode equivalents as I type. So, for starters, I added this to my abbrev_defs file:

But it simply doesn't work when I am in abbrev-mode. No error message, the auto-abbreviation simply doesn't take place. If I adjust the above:

Then auto-abbreviation works with the word "arrow". Why can't it auto-replace the symbol?
What's the fastest and most reliable way of working on files on a remote linux machine with emacs on a windows host machine? I need to be able to easily copy and paste text between emacs frames and use all the keyboard shortcuts, so putty and cygwin are out of the question. I've tried tramp mode but it just hangs when I try to connect.

On my desktop a version is installed and/or configured that way, so I easily can choose a region in the code and simply click on a menu option to comment out this block of code (i.e. at the begin of each line in the selected code two '##' are put). That is very convenient.
However, on my Laptop, running F12 and emacs 23.1.1, this menu option is missing! I searched within google and found the hint that by pressing 'C-c #' I also can comment out a selected region. But on my emacs it says: 'C-c # is undefined'. Am I missing something? Anyone any idea how to fix/install/update/solve this problem, so I can easily choose a couple of python lines and comment them out?
I am using GNU Emcas 23.2.1 in console mode on Konsole. It has white background colour. I want to change it to black.

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

Basically, I'm thinking in terms of VNC-like operation, where the remote user and local user see the same thing, only instead of a GUI, they both see TTY1 (or 2, or etc). Is that doable, or no?

I manage this system fully via SSH, but there is one thing that I don't know how to do, or know if it is even possible. I would like to start XBMC from my laptop so that I don't have to reboot the machine in order to do that (XBMC launches upon boot). This gives me dual head. I have a second machine on the same 100mbps network that is also running Ubuntu. I want to run X on that machine and have it's X session as a monitor in xrandr, so I would add something like this :xrandr --output REMOTE-1 --right-of VGA-1Is this possible?
I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server.So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble displaying Xwindows programs on a remote machine. If I run "ssh -X newmachine" and I login and then run a program like xclock, I get the error message:
Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0
If I run the same command to an anothermachine which is running Ubuntu 8.04 it works fine and xclock displays on my localmachine. If I run the command "echo $DISPLAY" on newmachine, I see:
localhost:10.0
Also, I have checked and xauth is installed on newmachine. What setting I have to change on Ubuntu 10.04 to allow remote display of Xwindows programs?
I set up a print server with a USB printer attached. I can remotely bring up CUPS and print a test page, but I would like to be able to add a printer in windows like I normally would. Add printer, network work printer and so on, but I am not sure how to implement this on Ubuntu server. Do I need to use IPP or do I have to share it out using Samba? Oh, my server does not have a graphical desktop, it is strictly console based.

Just for background, the computer I wish to administer is located on a boat in Southern Ireland while I'm in SE England. Sadly, the the boat operator is a far better fisherman than computer user and every now and then some rogue sensor numbers get captured by the boat's computer and these eventually need operator intervention. Anyone who has tried to talk a non PC literate user through correction routines over a dodgy mobile telephone while the said user is trying to operate mouse/keyboard in an Atlantic swell will appreciate the problem.
However, there is a fairly good mobile phone broadband signal available in the area so I was wondering if there was anyway I could set up a point to point connection with the boat over this medium. That would allow me to administer the machine remotely.
I tried to boot from CD for demo mode (9.10) but my XP machine wouldn't do it. I opened CD from My Computer and a selection window opened. Choices were to reboot to demo, Install to Windows or Help with Boot. I selected Help with Boot and a boot program was downloaded and installed (I think to drive C: (XP)). When I restarted, a new boot window opened giving me a choice to boot to XP or Ubuntu (9.10) and I chose Ubuntu. Instead of opening for demo it went to full install and I aborted the procedure, went to add/remove programs and uninstalled Ubuntu. Now when I restart I still get the boot selection window, Any suggestions as how to remove the boot program? Can't find it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter updating Ubuntu 10.04 I'm getting this error message. "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module." I have a NVIDIA Geforce 220 video card and previously installed the NVIDIA drivers. All was working well until this last update. There are countless number of forum messages on how to fix this but my problem is compounded because when I get this message the machine appears to lock up.
It doesn't respond to any keyboard commands such as Ctrl-Alt-F1. I am not able to get to a command prompt at all. This was a fresh install of 10.04 so I believe it uses GRUB2 which automatically boots into the operating system with no menu. Is there a way to stop GRUB2 from automatically running the OS and giving me a menu? I really don't want to reinstall.
