I have made an entry in fstab that is keeping me from booting. I am able to get into recovery either from entering "M" as it is trying to mount my bad entry or from Grub.
However once in recovery I am unable to save my edits in vi. I have tried several attempts at saving my edits to no avail. What trick will I have to impose in order to clean up my fstab so I can boot successfully.
Because I forgot to bring a portable hard drive, I cannot boot to a linux OS.
The reason is that the /etc/fstab has a line that is

The booting process stopped when it prompts for a root passwd or Ctl-D to reboot.
I keyed in the root passwd, and a (File Recovery) prompt appeared.
I tried to vi /etc/fstab but I cannot save the edited /etc/fstab.
How can I boot successfully in this case ?
I've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu.The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a removable SATA Mobilerack which i use to play with.It has redhat linux loaded on a 500GB disk and i made a new partition using fdisk and then made an ext3 filesystem with mkfs. I then tried to edit fstab to add the new partition but have obviously stuffed it up. When I tried to reboot I get the error fsck ext3: UNABLE TO RESOLVE `LABEL=/mnt'.

I searched and people are mentioning logging into the terminal and what not, but I cant get to a terminal so that kind of silly. People also talking about updating their video cards for this issue, which also is not my problem.
I am stuck in recovery shell because I mistyped one line in the fstab file. I know what I did wrong but now I cant edit my fstab anymore. I can only enter recovery shell and thats it.
sudo nano doesent work because it's a read only file / disk.
So any idea is worth trying
Sometimes Linux just make you want to throw the PC out of the window, and get a new one with WINDOWS on it...Having only just "got" the idea that there are a nunber of ways of issuing chmod, I now find that there is yet another when in the fstab file. It is an easygoogle to find out a workaround to make this drive RW, but doing that way one does not learn what is actually happening.how do I find out UID and GID? fmask and dmask, how do I find out what the current settings mean, and what they should be to allow RW access for various groups/users or for everyone?

I have a raid0 hd with windows xp pro. When i try to shrink the partition using anaconda, I get a disk error and the comper locks up. I have to shut off the ups to reboot.
I have two NTFS volumes I want to automount at boot. I can't get my user account to mount them in Fedora 10. I keep getting the message that the two lines I have edited in fstab are bad. The volumes are sda2 and sda8, and the volume names are SPACELAB and Spaceman. I also need to be able to mount an NTFS usb drive from time to time. I am getting frustrated, so I have posted my fstab file below,

View 2 Replies View Relatedok so i have been haviung the same problem for a while now and it is starting to **** me off, with every distribution of ubuntu i am getting thuis stupid message when i log in it is ionoly every once i a while that i get it but saince i have upgraded to 220.04 cannot fix it. i could fix it befor pretty easily, the probklem is when i get t o the login screen i get this generic login menu whne i attept to login i get this message somethiung like power management is not installed correctly. like i said b4 it was easy to fix, all i would do is to go to the ubuntu recovery thing, which is apparently not available ion 10.04 it does not evn give me a choice which to boot how do i get to recover mode in ubuntu 10.04?

4 core Xeon , was running 64 bit 9.10.
Upgrading over the weekend, but it failed, and suggested running dpkg-reconfigure -a
I couldn't launch any terminal/xterm windows, and couldn't login via ssh (kicked me out with xmalloc failure) or through a virtual console (showed garbled characters)
So I had to reboot.
Now the boot process -- I've tried recovery mode for all othe kernels I've got installed, but all fail in the same way:

I run 9.10 from a live usb with persistece, and got /etc/sudoers awfully messed up. now i'm told to fix in through 'recovery mode', but i don't think live usb has one. is that true? what about my sudoers? is there another way to fix it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfraid I'm an utter newbie. I'm using 10.04 64 bit. I only noticed this after I tried to install the NVIDIA driver and all my ubuntu os'es blackscreened after restart. Because I couldn't even access recovery mode, I ended up reinstalling ubuntu, overwriting the old root.I thought the problem was due to the driver, but it's even now persisting. I can run the terminal (within X?) but if I try ctl alt <F1-6>, the screen just freezes until I do ctl alt F7. Furthermore, recovery mode still leaves a black screen after the initial loading text. I need it to work before I attempt reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers again, as I don't want to reinstall the OS and all the programs.
Sometimes it feels like I can do stuff in recovery mode, like Ctl Alt Delete or sudo shutdown, but sometimes not. Not sure if this is related, but grub also lists windows vista and windows recovery as the opposite they should be (I thought my windows was completely screwed until I tried windows recovery).
I have a HP mini 2133 with Ubuntu 10.04 NBR installed, but because the CMOS battery went flat and the date on the BIOS got reset to 1980, I now get a failure starting the machine (Superblock failure: Last mount time is in the future). I've already googled on this error, and the general advise seems to be "run fschk and let it complete", but my question is...I don't get a grub screen come up when Ubuntu boots, and Contrl/Alt/F* doesn't bring me to any login windows. So how do I interrupt the startup, and get to a login window before I get the mount error.

I've got an ASUS N61 laptop with an ATI Radeon 5730 graphics card. I just upgraded to 10.10 from 10.4 and was trying to install the open source video drivers. I must have messed something up and can't get to the terminal now.
I'm having a huge problem right now and I could use some help deciphering what's wrong.I can't get my system to boot (see signature) and even the recovery mode is buggered. henever I try to boot, all I get is a flashing underscore. This is the same for both the normal and recovery modes Kernels. I've run the boot info script from a live cd and I've attached it to this post.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI used a clonezilla live cd to clone a working updated install to another SSD of the exact make and model. Something went terribly wrong, and the new system booted to emergency mode. I then went back to my working laptop I cloned from and it did the exact same thing when booted, into emergency mode. After a couple of days trying to figure out how to rebuild the FSTAB on the once working machine, I finally figured out how to mount the root partition and copied all my important stuff off. WHEW!
Before I was able to mount the root partition, I had a heck of a time trying to mount it, getting errors about unable to read superblock, etc. I used testdisk that I installed on a debian live cd (on a flash drive) and it did something, not sure, but after that, and rebooting, I no longer had sda1,sda2, and sda5. I only had 1 and 5. sda2 was the root partition (extended, ext2) and I thought all was lost. But after running fdisk -l, I noticed two other devices... dm-0 and dm-1. I noticed that dm-0 was my root partition and read that it has something to do with LVM. I mounted it, and grabbed all my important stuff.
Now I am stuck at rebuilding my fstab so my boot, root, and swap partitions are properly mounted. Again, I do not have anything to copy and paste yet. I guess I got lazy since a lot of my work on this system is via Putty and SSH from a windows machine. It certainly looks like the partitions are there and ok, just not sure where to go from here.
I read that I need to get the UUID's from the partitions, then rebuild the fstab using those. I figured out pretty quickly that using /dev/sda1, 2, and 5 did not work. And the UUID's are pretty long. Without copy and paste, I am not sure how to use those without manually keying them in. I tried shelling into my laptop via putty while it is in emergency mode but failed.
This is an urgent problem. I removed my propreitary ati display drivers because I had to update them but I don't know what happened. Now I can't boot. The screen shows the Ubuntu splash screen but then the login screen does not come on. I get a blank screen. Worst of all, I had removed Recovery entries from the grub so I can't boot into recovery mode so easily. It's urgent. I don't want to reinstall with my exams a week away.

I'm running 9.04 on a Powerbook G4 and, long story short, I accidentially put it into hibernate mode. When I try to turn it on, I am greeted with a blank screen after the bootloader. Unfortunately I can find no way to get out of this, since I'm using yaboot instead of grub. I can access my yaboot.conf file if I mount the HD from a live CD, but is there something I can put in there to tell it not to try to resume from hibernation? Or would deleting the swap partition at hda4 that apparently contains my hibernation data solve the problem?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed lucid last week, and this morning installed some updates that appeared in update manager and then started having issues with permissions so I rebooted. Now when I try and log in I get the message Authentication Error Normally this wouldn't be a problem I would reboot again hit ESC just before loading Grub appeared and go into recovery mode and change the password for my master user. But I never get the chance to press ESC, and even I hold the key down from the time my BIOS flash screen is up, I never get the GRUB menu.

I have used the old ubuntu on this computer some time ago i believe it was the 8.04 version. But anyway back to the point, i have decided to put ubuntu back onto the computer but i have encountered an issue. The issue is that when i installed ubuntu everything seemed to be working perfectly out of the box the printer, wireless etc... but when i installed the restricted drivers for the ati card inside.Upon loading ubuntu a big OUT OF RANGE came up on the monitor and i cannot access anything. I looked at the FAQ but am unable to get into recovery mode to type in the relevant command prompt and there seems to be no grub popping up to press esc/shift to get into the menu. Is there anyway around this? i am prepared to reinstall ubuntu but what could i do to prevent this upon re installation?.
View 4 Replies View Relatedas Ubuntu is my only OS on this box.I had this PC running as a server for a few months with few reboots.I installed updates as usual yesterday, and hadn't changed anything configuration-wise since the last reboot. Well last night this server that I was running was moved to another Windows box and so I finally got to shut this PC down for the night. In the morning, I was greeted with an endless splash screen. It went on for 20 minutes without anything. I did update the kernel through update manager.
So what do I do? This machine has a 1TB HDD with a lot of very important data on it--reformatting is not a considerable option at this point. Which is bad because I don't know what else I could so when even recovery mode isn't working...
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on an Acer Aspire 7520 laptop running Vista.Thereafter, Vista could only be run via the "Windows Recovery Environment" grub menu option, which is on /dev/sda2. However, within Vista than the wireless network is not functioning any more. It has given lot of headaches to find a way out. Unsuccessful, so far.
