I am stuck in recovery shell because I mistyped one line in the fstab file. I know what I did wrong but now I cant edit my fstab anymore. I can only enter recovery shell and thats it.
sudo nano doesent work because it's a read only file / disk.
So any idea is worth trying
[URL] and instead of a fat32 I added a ntfs 2 tb hd to my computer. But it doesnt like it, so now when I boot I get

I searched and people are mentioning logging into the terminal and what not, but I cant get to a terminal so that kind of silly. People also talking about updating their video cards for this issue, which also is not my problem.
I have made an entry in fstab that is keeping me from booting. I am able to get into recovery either from entering "M" as it is trying to mount my bad entry or from Grub.
However once in recovery I am unable to save my edits in vi. I have tried several attempts at saving my edits to no avail. What trick will I have to impose in order to clean up my fstab so I can boot successfully.
I am trying to edit fstab to auto mount a couple of windows shares. I have this but it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? code...

The reason is that the /etc/fstab has a line that is

The booting process stopped when it prompts for a root passwd or Ctl-D to reboot.
I keyed in the root passwd, and a (File Recovery) prompt appeared.
I tried to vi /etc/fstab but I cannot save the edited /etc/fstab.
How can I boot successfully in this case ?
I was unable to boot into Ubuntu 9.1 today because the file system is now read only. When I check fstab, it shows "ro" but I can't change it because it's on a read only file system. I tried umounting the root then remounting with read/write access, but I was unable to umount the root. I also tried booting with a live CD, but all I can find is the root.disk file, I can't see any of the file structure. That's probably just how it is supposed to be, but I'm new to Linux so I found it strange. method to either change the disk to read/write besides this?sudo umount /mount -o remount,rw /The other option would be to somehow mount the disk image while using a live CD so that I can get to the fstab file and edit it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI really need some help here, this is driving me mad. I edited my fstab file to boot a partition on start up, only instead of typing sda7 I typed sda1 by mistake and now can't boot.
The problem that is driving me mad is I cannot save changes to fstab from a live cd because I do not have root permissions.
I am relatively new to Linux and have no idea how to use the fedora install disk or the commands to use or if it will let me save changes to the file.
I cannot believe something so easy to fix does not appear to be possible because i can't save changes to the fstab on my fedora install.
I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on an Acer Aspire laptop and have broken my display system while trying to use the restricted drivers for the nvidia graphics card.
Basically I downloaded and activated the restricted driver. I rebooted and now ubuntu freezes on startup.
I can get access to the command line but am unable to edit either fstab or xorg.conf because ubuntu has mounted the filesystem in read only mode.
I have read and tried all the options given in this posting [URL] but because I cant read or write any of the files I cant seem to affect any change to the system
I have a second hard drive with fedora 10 installed on it. My primary drive and os is fedora 12. How do I edit the fstab file in order to mount the second hard drive and get files off of it
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have never in a year had a problem with this d-boot system. Two days ago I tried to boot into ubuntu like every day. It started to load normal, went to the ubuntu logo and paused for about 15 seconds and posted this under the logo:

I have looked everywhere and tried so many things, I can't look any further. All I have been doing for two days is trying to boot this system.
My MBP fails to boot Arch. This is what I did to install ArchLinux. Install rEFIT.
Partition using disk utility such that first one is Mac partition, second is Arch & the third ie the last one is windows.
Then put Windows 7 CD, select it from rEFIT and install it. Similar, install ArchLinux just as I did for windows.
Then finally to install the GRUB, I issued the command $grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/arch - recheck /dev/sda3 (after mounting my /dev/sda3 to /mnt/arch).
This is the exact error and then it drops to recovery:

I have tried rootfstype too. No success.

I just want to be able to remove a couple programs listed in the menu if possible.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had two hd's in my box forever. for more space and backup reasons. Well I have started running the Debian Squeeze distro since December. I've had many issues, some are still unresolved. but now I'm running into major headaches with the fstab. Specifically dealing with/wondering why UUID's are used instead of the old /dev/hd? I was a little annoyed when I tried Kubuntu to find /dev/sd? used instead of /dev/hd? but that was workable. But the UUID's are a nightmare. Here's my problem.
My main box is finally giving up the ghost. The mobo is dying. So in order to do some tests I took my hd bundle (my two hard drives with their cables) physically out of the box and temp installed them in a test box. I wanted to do some benchmark and other tests. I got all kinds of errors. I found that the system wasn't recognizing the UUID's listed in fstab. My concern is when the new mobo gets here next week I won't simply be able to plug the hd's in like I always have been and just let Linux reconfigure itself (Debian used to be good about this). I really don't want to have to clean reinstall if it's not needed.
So for this I have two questions. WHY developers decided to drop using /dev/hd? or even /dev/sd? ?
And is it possible to revert fstab's listings back to the old /dev/hd? settings. In debian fstab had lines commented out showing how each partition was listed in it's /dev/hd? status during install.
I'm getting really sick of all these archane changes in ALL aspects of linux that don't seem to have any good explaination or need.
I've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu.The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.

How do I rename the current fstab to another name and rename the fstab.BAK to fstab? Since this is read only in the /etc directory I have not been able to make this happen from a command prompt.

After I ran Matlab in a shell (without GUI) the shell does not display characters anymore, but will execute any command, I just can't see the characters that I'm typing.. View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat I am trying to do is edit the link target to force ip=xxxx.xxx.xxx string at end. I have a software program which access 4 different servers running the software but with different configs. In xp I can copy links and modify as above to correctly force the program to the various servers.
I have read the various how tos on hard vs sym links which I get. Playing around with hardlinks and sysmlinks (the examples I find) does not seem to be what I need. Feel like this is pretty basic stuff but I am a bit stumped.
I have an external hdd that I have added to the fstab so it will mount when I boot. But every time I add the line to fstab and reboot, it hangs during the boot process and says something about ureadahead-other status 4. here is my line in fstab..
/dev/sdc1 /NAS ext3 defaults 0 0
Is there anything wrong with that? I couldn't remember what fs I chose when I formatted it so I did "sudo parted /dev/sdc print" and it said it was ext3.
