Ubuntu :: Automatically Add Panel To Second Monitor?

Jun 16, 2010

I want to add a new panel to my external monitor automatically, but I don't want it to clutter up my main monitor when the external is not plugged in.

As it stands today, I right-click on my top panel, select New Panel to create a new one, right-click on that one, select Properties, select Bottom, right-click again, select Add to Panel, select Window List and Show Desktop, right-click on both, select Move and drag them left....every single day.

At night, I go home and delete the new panel, because I only use a single monitor and the panel is there, cluttering up my desktop.

How can I do all that automatically?

Ubuntu :: Add Panel To Dual Monitor In 10.10?

Apr 7, 2011

I have a dual monitor setup in 10.10, which acts as an extended workspace.

In previous versions of ubuntu, I could move panels around by grabbing them and moving them to the area within the second monitor.

In 10.10, I cannot seem to do that.

How do I create panels in this extended workspace on the second monitor?

It uses build in wireless but I just tried to connect using an ethernet cable and nothing happened. Still couldn't get on the internet. My wireless monitor won't even show up on the panel and I've tried to readd it and it doesn't work. I have no need for a computer without internet.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Settings Per Monitor Config?

Mar 31, 2011

I have a maverick box plugged into two monitors, using the open source radeon driver and randr. Each monitor has a top and bottom gnome panel, with various widgets in each. There is no /etc/xorg.conf. The Problem: If I 1) remove both monitors to plug the box into my HDTV, or 2) connect to the X server remotely from a laptop, the panels all get shoved onto the one display. Do you have any advice on how I might specify different gnome panel 'profiles' for the different uses of this computer?

Ubuntu :: Xinerama And Dual Screens - Create Another Panel On The 2nd Monitor?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm having some issues getting my two monitors (both 1600x900) to work well with Xinerama. The first thing I'm having trouble with is getting 1 wallpaper to span across both monitors..from what I've googled it's sounds like I'm not the first either The 'span' function in the change wallpaper window doesn't do it. The second thing is that I would like the panels to stretch across both monitors well, or at least be able to create another panel on the 2nd monitor which I can't do now. Here's my xorg.conf file:

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "amdcccle Layout"
Screen 0 "amdcccle-Screen[1]-0" 0 0[code]....

Ubuntu :: Installed The Nvidia 185 Drivers And It's Not Recognizing Monitor As A Flat Panel Lcd?

Mar 10, 2010

i have a viewsonic VA712b monitor that used to get 1280x1024 resolution on my dell optiplex gx260 that had the intel video card.i upgraded my motherboard cpu and memory..the nvidia 6100 that is onboard seems like it would be an improvement to my old onboard intel but the best resolution i can get is 1024x768

i installed the nvidia 185 drivers and it's not recognizing my monitor as a flat panel lcd but as a crt, also it won't set the correct refreshrate - either 60 or 75.. it's set at 50... since xorg 7.4 no longer uses a xorg.conf file.. i'm not sure how to go about manually adjusting the settings to ones that will actually work. i mean other than buying a separate graphics car (URL)

Is this a bug?I just tried to move the panel to my laptop's desktop, and the size of a maximized window in that screen gets adjusted properly. So I guess it is a bug related to the extended desktop

I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

Ubuntu :: After Adding 'killall Gnome-panel' To The Startup Applications Does The Panel Fail To Load Altogether

Dec 4, 2010

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.

Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.

I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

Ubuntu :: Resolution - Top Panel Is Slightly Cut Off - Missing About The Top 20% Of The Panel

Mar 23, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:

HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050

When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.

I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.

Ubuntu :: Starting Empathy From Panel Freezes Panel?

Sep 25, 2010

So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).

Desktop Environments :: Unity2D Panel Broken (mouse Over Reverts To Gnome-panel) / Sort It?

So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Best Way To Duplicate A DVD?

Feb 23, 2011

I finally got round to transcribing our wedding video from VCR to DVD. Now I would like to duplicate that video a few times and pass copies round the family, more to preserve it than to bore the relatives.

I dragged the DVD icon from the desktop to a thunar (file manager) window and it created a folder containing this lot code...

Total size 1.3 GB.
But I have no idea what to do with these files.

I tried this command code...

and ended up with a 4.4 GB file, which Archive Manager says contains the above folders, and presumably also contains an image of 3.1 GB of formatted but unused disk.

What's the best thing to do here? The ISO file will presumably burn a good DVD copy but it's a waste of disk space to keep it, (I'd like to keep a copy on hard disk too) and I guess will also take needlessly long to burn.

Can I create a smaller ISO from the file folders? If so, is there an app to edit the titles before I do so? The recorder put a second title "Empty Title" on the title page which I'd like to get rid of. I discovered by accident that the VOB files play in parole media player - one is the title screen, and the other two contain about half the video each. So I don't know what all the other files are about.

Ubuntu :: Xorg Doesn't Detect Monitor / Won't Display Higher Than 800x600 On A 1400x900 Monitor

Apr 3, 2010

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

Here is my current xorg.conf.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

[Code]....

Ubuntu :: Startup Applications Appear In Duplicate?

May 16, 2010

I tried to put a terminal in the desktop using more or less the procedure described in this article:

[URL]

It worked fine, but then I installed avant-windows-navigator and I think it created some conflicts with compiz and other applications. Both the desktop terminal and Skype started to appear in duplicate when I logged in. So I went to the startup applications menu and disabled them both. When I logged back in they both appear only once, but the terminal is in the wrong spot in the desktop. So there are probably some startup registers somewhere that are causing this.i've tried reinstalling compiz and I uninstall AWN and it didn't work.
