General :: Duplicate Photos In Ubuntu?
Feb 3, 2011
I've got a lot of photos I've take over the years, and I suspect I've got lots and lots of duplicates, since I may have multiple backups for the same photos.
Have anyone experience with deduplication of photos in Ubuntu, and could recommend an approach for a quick and efficient way to do this?

I just imported a large set of photos into Shotwell on Ubuntu. The popup on completion says:
Quote:
Import Complete
749 duplicate photos/videos were not imported:
[path]/[filename]
[path]/[filename]
[path]/[filename]
[path]/[filename]
(and 745 more)
How can I get a full list of the 749 photos and videos that were not imported?

I have recently installed Puppy Linux because my Windows OS crashed and I could not find the license number and did not want to pay $180 for a new one.So far This OS looks good but quite different to Windows so I am having difficulty finding how to retrieve my photos and documents from the computer.
I have been able to find the relevant files but I can't see how to copy or print them.
I would like to put them onto CD and transfer them to my laptop which is running Windows 7.

I have multiple noisy photos (caputed without tripod) that needs to be adjusted (moved/rotated) and averaged.
How it's better to do it in Linux with FOSS console-based programs?
Current way is something like:
mplayer mf://*.JPG -vo yuv4mpeg:file=qqq.yuv
transcode -i qqq.yuv -y null -J stabilize=maxshift=500:fieldsize=100:fieldnum=6:stepsize=50:shakiness=10
transcode -i qqq.yuv -J transform=smoothing=100000:sharpen=0:optzoom=0 -y raw -o www.yuv
Update: Experimented with "Hugin". It only distorted all photos according some "projection" and refused to merge them: enblend: excessive overlap detected; remove one of the images. Of course "excessive" - they're all almost in the same place. No averaging? /* and images are not actually aligned */.
Proceeding to experiments with enblend/panorama_tools/ale.

This is the equivilent of a DJ going into the"dusty records bin"to play an old song.I've got a hard drive that's left over from a Mandriva Spring 2008 computer and I need to copy the photos off it to a DVD and move them to a computer running Ubuntu.I can't seem to get the Ubuntu computer to access what's on the Mandriva drive, so I've loaded Mandriva Spring 2008 on another computer.
I've accessed the photos I need easily enough, but can't copy them to a storage medium so I can move them to the other computer. I've tried two USB devices, an external DVD drive and a flash drive and can't just copy (or drag 'n drop) the files to the other devices. This evening I may try a portable hard drive, again with a USB connection, and see if that works.
If there's a fool-proof way to do this by using a terminal, I'll try that. I haven't been able to devote enough time to Linux to familiarize myself with terminal commands. Or, if there's a program that will run under Mandriva Spring 2008 that will let me accomplish the transfer, I'll try that as well.

I'm not familiar with Linux and I do not understand technical wording at all. I was given this laptop as a favour and it is an ex-work Dell Latitude. I was given this to help me as a replacement when my Compaq working with Windows Vista stopped working. I do not understand the way Linux works much. I managed to upload photos before from my Ericsson K850i to my memory stick but this time when I tried it kept telling me that the path was invalid and such things which I did not understand. I created a folder for 2011 photos ready to go next year but the mouse pad is hard to control and even though I did nothing the 2010 folder went into the 2011. Sorry if I am not being very clear.
All I want to know is where did my whole years worth of digital photos go from my memory stick as I didn't delete anything. Would someone please help me understand all the different extensions or tell me what I need to do to try and retrieve them. I would be so grateful. I was nearly crying when it happened as when you right click in Linux there is no Undo/Redo button.
I have searched the board and I did see some other questions but I don't think they will help in this instance so I have started one. I hope I can get my photos back and also hope to hear from someone soon.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga) 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5xen (Xen release for virtualisation)
I'm trying to track down a problem with a utility that used to work and now hangs indefinitely. Since its hanging, I suspected a locking problem, and went to have a look for the process ids in /proc/locks; I get:
148: FLOCK ADVISORY WRITE 30279 ca:21:49153 0 EOF
148: -> FLOCK ADVISORY READ 30282 ca:21:49153 0 EOF
Now as near as I can tell this shouldn't be my problem, since the two ADVISORY locks - one READ and one WRITE - shouldn't conflict with one another. But I'd like to understand it all the same. I haven't been able to find any kind of definitive guide for the format of /proc/locks entries, but what I did find in the manuals specifically states:
"Each lock has its own line which starts with a unique number. "
Which is obviously not true; both of my lines start with the same number. Also, since most search engines don't seem to play nicely with symbols, I can't find any reference to what the "->" means.

We have a huge amount of duplicate files in a folder and I would like some pointers on to writing a bash script to create a list of the duplicate files. I've seen examples that check for the md5 sum of files... but I dont need that, the file name is enough.

I have a file that contains lines representing the nodes of a polyline but I only need the first point in each segment. With the following text:
0,"013A",0.57,260739.891,4379258.87
0,"013A",0.57,260737.674,4379258.94
0,"013A",0.57,260684.628,4379258.35
1,"013A",0.545,260769.915,4379257.84
1,"013A",0.545,260739.891,4379258.87
[Code]....
The problem with uniq is that the last two colums will differ. I don't care about the x/y for any points following the first one.

How do I remove the older one? On another note, if I want to update Qt to 4.6 what would be the steps if I already have qt 4.5

What i am trying is to check the file duplication in a folder and remove a file if it is a duplicate of another file ie the contents are duplicate; but names may be same.
Basically i am using md5sum to calculate the md5sum values of each file and redirecting to a file. And i am thinking of comparing the md5sum values. But i am finding it hard to decide how to complete the code after redirecting the output of calculation of md5sum to a file.

I have a couple of MP3s that have duplicate fields in their ID3 tags. Let me show you what I mean: This is causing problems with some media players. Is there a tool that can automatically fix these MP3s in batch? I'd prefer a free Windows or Linux program. I'm not afraid to work on the command line if necessary.

What kind of method to find the duplicates files on linux,
1.how to find just using the file name, sometimes i figure out people often to copy their files to another directory and i want to find out if there any same file name in the linux box.
2. what about if i want to find the duplicate files based on contents of the file, example is in picture file if users store picture files from digital camera first they just save the file name in default but when they want to give that picture to others they will rename it, i've been used method md5 for this situation in python script but it takes long time
I'm asking this question just to know to use bash script a lot in work and i want to test out fdupes at home, is fdupes use similar md5 scan to find duplicate files?

I want to find and remove duplicate consecutive words from a text file. I've tried working with array but is very difficult..then i've tried using sed...somebody hint me with this sed :
sed ':f;N;$!bf; s/(.*)
1/1
/g; s/(.*)1/1/g'.
It works fine but if i have 3 consecutive identical words it only remove first one and the last two remain intact.

Using Linux, I have several backup levels. One of them is a periodical sector by sector copy (using dd) of my laptop harddisk to an external USB disk. Yes, I have other backups too, like remote rsync. This approach (the disk dd) is OK when cloning a HDD with no LVM volumes, since I can plug the external disk anytime and mount the partitions simply mounting /dev/sdb* instead of /dev/sda*. Trivial and handy.
Today I moved ALL my harddisk (including the /boot) to LVM. Everything works fine. I will stress it for a couple of days, and then I will do a sector by sector copy to my external harddisk. Now I have a problem, I guess.
If in the future I plug the external USB HDD to recover any file, the OS will detect a duplicate LVM configuration, with the same name and the same UUID. Even doing a vgrename (which LVM would be renamed, the internal HDD or the external HDD?), the cloned UUID will not change. Is there any command to change name and UUID? Ideally I would clone the HDD and then change the LVM group name and its UUID, but I don't know how to do it. Another related issue would be... In the past I have booted my laptop using the external disk, using the BIOS boot menu and changing GRUB entries manually to boot from /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda. But now my current GRUB configuration boots directly from a LVM logical volume, something like: set root='(LVM-root)' in my grub.cfg. So... What is going to happen with duplicated volumes?

I have some big files of logs that contain errors printed by an app. They are most of the time relevant, however most of them are similar. So i figured i could check what happened between a time interval with a find.
Im using this one
Code:
And I get an output similar to this one.
Code:
Is there a way to condensate the output lines to get only one or two, indicating the start and last occurrence of a block? Or I need to create a program to do so?
Because right now I get thousands of similar lines, but when I'm scrolling through them i sometimes miss relevant information that i would've otherwise noted if it wasn't all that spammy.
