Ubuntu :: Beep During Shutdown / Shut It Off?

Feb 5, 2010

I use Mythbuntu 9.10 as HTPC and I got where I can turnoff the computer using remote. But how can I get a "beep" to be played during shutdown? by this I would know the computer is shutting off - it is behind a glas door so I don't see if the led's turns off.

Ubuntu :: A Loud 'Beep' When I Shut Down

Sep 14, 2010

Every time I shut down my laptop, this loud beeping noise comes out of my computer. It's just one beep, but it's loud and annoying. This has been happening recently, and not from the start of installing Ubuntu to my laptop.

after installing linux mint 7, I have been getting one beep on shutdown, a google search on this came back as a ram problem...but then i ran across a bunch of posts on ubuntu forums about one beep on shutdown, with an older version of ubuntu, grep does return some paramter errors, but in the mint bug report page those are listed as : benign ignore. it doen't bother me in the least, as long as it isn't a warning of impending hardware failure.

General :: Terminal Shutdown -h -P With A Beep?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a habit of watching videos when I go to sleep. So I decided to start using, for example, the following when I laid down:

sudo shutdown -h -P 60

Of course this shuts down the computer in an hour. I was wondering if there was a way I could get the computer to beep a few times for the last 10 Minutes and then a few more times for the last 5 minutes?

General :: Disable The Terminal Beep When Running The Shutdown Command?

Sep 3, 2009

I've used the following script here: [URL] to upgrade Alsa to 1.0.21 in Ubuntu 8.04. Now whenever I run:

Code:

sudo shutdown -h <time> or sudo reboot from the terminal I get a rather annoying beep sound. What's even more annoying is if I use the shutdown command to specify a time I get a beep every 10 minutes or so.
I've tried disabling the terminal beep in the terminal profile, disabling the beep in System/Preferences/Sound, adding "blacklist pcspkr" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, and running gconf-editor from the terminal and setting /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode to 'off' rather than 'on'.

Ubuntu :: "Shut Down" Logs Out Current User Rather Than Shutdown

Jan 15, 2010

I've done a fresh install of Karmic 9.10. I'm running on an ASUS laptop (Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300). Problem: When shutting down via the In Indicator applet (i.e. top right menu where one of the options is "Shut Down..."), the system seems to log out the user instead. Then at the user login screen, I have to select "shut down" from there before the laptop powers off. I've also discovered that from the GNOME desktop if I open a terminal and do "sudo shutdown -h now", the system powers off as expected without any further action. Seems like a permissions problem even though the account is the administrator and is the account used for sudo actions.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Server :: Shutdown The Nodes From The Master Terminal Using "shutdown -h Now" Get Shutdown?

Dec 10, 2010

I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .

Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

Ubuntu :: Beep Command Does Not Work?

Jan 25, 2010

My beep command stopped working -- it does not beep. I think this happened when I upgraded to Karmic (but could have been earlier). I use the beep command to notify me of important events.

I tried looking in sound settings, and did not find anything suspicious. I also tried googling but most stuff just describes how to "disable the annoying beep". Lastly, I tried different software channels and repositories to find an alternative program to the beep command, but nothing happened.

General :: Locate Shutdown Log For Linux Shutdown (RHL 5.1-2.6.18-53.el5PAE)

Apr 22, 2010

I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.

I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.

I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.

That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

Ubuntu :: How Do I Turn Off Beep In Virtual Terminal

Feb 9, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell XPS M1530. Sometimes i get a _VERY_ loud beep-sound, eg when i run out of battery or, the case that has me coming here when i'm working in a virtual terminal (tty1-6) and hit backspace once too often, that is, when the command line is actually empty. Not that big of a deal you might think, but, especially when you're wearing good (read: possibly loud) headphones the experience is that god damn unpleasant that i'd like to make sure it won't happen again.Oh and well, just hitting mute (in gnome, which doesn't have a lot to do with tty1 anyways) won't do the job.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Re-enable System Beep

Feb 24, 2010

I like the system beep because I can tell checkgmail to beep when an email comes, that way my speakers don't have to be on.Anyways, I did a fresh install of Karmic the other day. Something is being weird with me when I try to re-enable the beep. Karmic blacklisted pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . Here's what happens:I leave "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep", and it beeps. Good.

Then I comment out "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "beep". Nothing. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep". Nothing. I do "lsmod | grep pcspkr". It's listed there as it should be. I check with "sudo grep pcspkr /var/log/dmesg" and find no errors.

gone to sound preferences muted alert volume. If this was a desktop i would just physically disable the internal speaker, but i don't want to open up my laptop do to possible difficulty of reassembly.

Hardware :: Solution For Disabling Annoying PC Beep (Ubuntu)?

Apr 9, 2010

When in a virtual tty, Ubuntu has an extremely annoying audible beep alert to notify the user that he is trying to do something that can't be done. Say for instance, hitting the backspace key at the command prompt. The cursor can not back up from there, so the system issues out a loud obnoxious BEEP in response. I am in a virtual tty often, and have found myself on a quest to eradicate that annoying BEEP from my system, if it is the last thing I do. After trying several modprobe, and other solutions, that did not work, I have found a solution that does.

alsamixer has a setting for 'PC Beep' that can be muted, silencing all audible system complaints from a virtual tty.

It would be a pain to do this every time, so...

amixer is a command line interface to alsamixer. By placing the following command in my .bashrc file, I have solved my problem.

amixer set 'PC Beep' disable
