General :: Copy Folder Hierarchy / Recreate All Folders From One Directory Without Copying Over Contents Of Folder?

Jul 2, 2010

Is there a way to recreate all the folders from one directory to another without copying over the contents of the folder? I've been trying to do something like this,

Code:for i in `ls $X`; do mkdir $PATH/$i; doneUnfortunately $i is deliminated by whitespaces in the filenames and not the actual folders.

$X contains only other folders so I dont have to worry about regular files but any kind of more "advanced" solution would work.

Ubuntu :: Create Shell Script To Copy Contents Of A Shared Folder On A XP PC?

Apr 8, 2011

I was wondering if there would be a way for me to copy the contents of a shared folder that's running on an XP system using shell script. Actually, there are two shared folders that I want to do this with. I want to be able to launch the script and automatically copy all the contents of each folder into two separate folders on my ubuntu desktop. For example;

Lets say that I have Shared Folders A1 and A2 on my networked XP system and I have Folders B1 and B2 on my Ubuntu desktop. I want the script to automatically copy the contents of A1 into B1 and likewise for A2 and B2. During the copying, I want the script set up such that any pre-existing files in the B1 & B2 folders will automatically get overwritten by the ones copied from A1 & A2.Is there any possibilities of me achieving this?

Ubuntu :: Copy All The Pictures From Various Folders In Documents To A Single Folder

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Copying Folder To Home Folder?

Jan 8, 2011

I'm not positive if this is in the correct section but I am hoping so. I am running dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Modify Folder Hierarchy For Importing Music?

Jun 16, 2010

I dual-boot, and in Windows, I use an awesome program for music maintenance called MediaMonkey, which sadly, isn't Open Source, but still awesome nonetheless. Anyway, one of the things it lets you do is sort and import your libraries by practically any format you could find imaginable. I have that program setup to import and store my music in the following format:

G:Tunes<Genre><Album Artist><Album><Track Number> - <Track Artist> - <Track Title>.<Extension>

Is there a way to change the default setups in whatever music program I choose to use? It seems to be the same no matter what program I use if it's a GNOME-based program. I've used Banshee and Rhythmbox, but both only leave me with the following options:

Folder:
Album Artist/Album/
Album Artist/Album Artist - Album/
Album Artist/Album (Year)
Album
Album Artist

Ubuntu :: F-Spot To Digikam - Cannot Easily Drag Tags Around To Recreate Hierarchy

Apr 11, 2010

I'm trying to switch my photo collection from F-spot to Digikam. Things have gone surprisingly well, considering I'm running a GNOME system. I have ~2000 photos with a hierarchal tag system to categorize them. I've come to grips with the fact that Digikam won't be able to read this tag hierarchy, and will completely flatten it.

My real problem is that I cannot easily drag tags around to recreate my hierarchy. Digikam only lets me drag one tag at a time (instead of allowing me to ctrl-select or shift-select multiple tags simultaneously), and when I release that tag, a popup appears, requiring me to click "Move Here" before the tag actually goes where I dropped it. Is there any way to speed up tag management in Digikam?

General :: Copy A Directory Without It's Contents?

Nov 5, 2009

Is there a way to copy a directory (retaining the permissions and owners) without copying the contents of the directory?

If there is no such thing... then I need a way to determine if a target path is a file or a directory, and if it is a directory I need to make a new directory elsewhere that has the same name, owner and permissions.

Basically, I'm trying write a script to copy 200 GB of files over a network to a new server, and I'd like to do it by generating a list with the find command. That way, I can migrate large chunks of the files over the course of a week, and on the day of the migration generate a new list of files that changed in the last week and then copy just the chagned files over minimizing the down time. However, the list will contain directories that I can't just use the 'cp' command on because it will copy all the contents of the directory.
