I've just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10. When logginin in with the default GUI (Unity?) and selecting Crypkeeper, I cannot see the icon that enables me to mount the encrypted file system.
I've installed Office 2007 under wine, and would like to add launchers for Word, Excel, etc to the Unity launcher bar.
So, I've created a launcher on the Desktop that will run Word with wine. I've changed the icon to the Word Icon and everything works great from the desktop. If I drag that launcher to the Unity bar, it adds it, but changes the icon to the springboard default icon that new launchers use. Please see attached picture.
As a side note, I am really starting to like Unity (puts on flamesuit), but it seems very easy to break the install of 11.04. I've had to reinstall 4 times now.
I recently tried gnome 3 on my netbook to see if it would work (via PPA) on ubuntu 11.04, it didn't.URL...I rolled backed to gnome 2 (by removing the PPA - comment 7 in the above link), however, now when I use unity as my desktop any changes I make to the docked icons are not saved when I logout. This seems to happen on a couple of different users, so it doesn't seem to be a user setting problem (i.e. a weird file version problem). As a work around I have unity 2D installed on my netbook (an eee 1000H) and this works fine.
Is it possible to move the unity menu bar? It's the bar on the left side with all the icons. I would prefer it to be on the bottom. I really hope they do this for 11.04.
I see many people are a little uneasy with the new desktop of Ubuntu. I think it's marvelous, though... Not because of a reason other than just that a change after a short while is always good.
So, in the Gnome desktop, I would go to gconf-editor and set some keys and I'd get my computer folder and home folder shortcut on my desktop.
This time since the unity desktop has come with a nice sidebar, I'd like to put the same icon there, in the sidebar. But I can't even access computer as Computer:/// anymore... What to do?
I installed 11.04 Beta2 and have a question regarding the mail (envelope) icon in the upper right corner (between the volumn icon and the time).
I prefer Thunderbird over Evolution, and uninstalled Evoloution. Is there a way to tell the icon to open Thunderbird. After uninstalling Evolution, the icon does not seem to have any functionality?
I switched on my machine this evening and the first thing I noticed was the home icon in the unity launcher has changed, then I noted then I noted that the window switcher icon, power-off icon and me icon in top right are also different.
On starting nautilus (clicking on home icon) it looks more like thunar (although about says its not). A screen shot showing "nautilus-thunar" and the desktop is attached.
Firefox's minimize, maximize and close icons have also changed - see other screen shot.
Anyone got any idea what's going on? Anyone else have this.
From what I gather, there's no way to remove the Trash icon from the Unity launcher, or to hide it; is this true? I noticed that if I delete ~/.local/share/Trash, the file re-appears if I click on the Trash icon in the launcher.
I could not find details of what CryptKeeper was doing and I worked this out. It shows how to open and close CryptKeeper files using encfs form the command line. I hope this helps others.
Ubuntu karmic 9.10. CryptKeeper 0.9.4-1 encfs 0.5.2-1ubuntu1 also works in Mint8. Tom Morton author of CryptKeeper site: [url]
How Gnome Cryptkeeper works with encfs
In CryptKeeper create a new encrypted folder:
The directory above is created and also another hidden one called: /home/ian/.aaaaaaxxxxTestCryptKeeper_encfs which contains one hidden file called .encfs6.xml. As you create additional folder and files in the /home/ian/aaaaaaxxxxTestCryptKeeper additional folders and files with encrypted names are created in /home/ian/aaaaaaxxxxTestCryptKeeper 4L9KBI4IeoAKOoZ,IwzVyn2VPGysXt-JCbStUej5Ewnn90. These mirror any files and folders which you create in the encrypted directory except that there names and contents are totally encrypted.
The above CryptKeeper directory can be created anywhere within the Linux file system, for example, on another partition. In each case two directories are created within the parent (in this example /home/ian/), one with the original directory name, the other preceeded with a "." and followed by "_encfs".
How to open a directory created with CryptKeeper using encfs.
Provided you copy the directory like .aaaaaaxxxxTestCryptKeeper_encfs and all its contents, it can be opened anywhere using the following command. (Note that full path names are needed.)
If /home/ian/.aaaaaaxxxxTestCryptKeeper_encfs does not exist you will asked if you wish to create it and you will be asked for a password twice. In this case it will not be in CryptKeeper unless you then import it.)
If it is a CryptKeeper file then it appears in CryptKeeper file list as opened and can be closed from there. To close from the command line type:
I'm unable to display the panel icon for me-tv in unity with ubuntu 11.04. I've tried editing the whitelist in dconf-editor. Any other ideas from anyone? A Google search has also revealed nothing.
My wife was using cryptkeeper fine, then she right-clicked the keys on the panel and did something, I'm not sure what. Anyway, the keys you click on to open the encrypted folder are gone and I can't figure out how to get them back. System monitor shows cryptkeeper running. I can kill it and re-start it, but the keys don't show on the panel. I'm running ubuntu 9.10.
I just upgraded to Natty 11.04 and am getting used to the Unity Launcher. I was trying to add a terminal to the launcher and I'm not sure what I did but now if I copy the icon from nautilus "/usr/share/applications" over to the launcher it creates a blank space like the icon is missing but if you scroll over it and right click you see Label Empty / Keep in Launcher.
The weird thing is that if I create a link to terminal in /usr/share/applications and drag the link over to the launcher it appears as it should.
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and this is my first experience with Unity. I have managed to create launchers in .local/share/applications and drag them to the launcher to add desired shortcuts. Here are two questions I have:
1) I am adding many shortcuts to various directories I frequently use; the shortcut's have commands like nautilus /home/user/some/dir. Despite the fact that I change their icons, when I drag them to the launcher they all use the Nautilus icon. Is there a way to fix this?
2) Is there a way to group the launchers? For example, having a group for office applications, and a group for directory launchers?
1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?
Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher? What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
Ive had a few freeze ups on this system but the last time it affected the top panel. The wireless icon has disappeared to be replaced by an extra bluetooth icon.screenshot attached. Is there any kind of clean up utility (like tune up utilities in win)Also, any kind of log so I can trace this freeze up Iḿ getting.Ive only just got this laptop so dont know if it did it before although prev owner never mentioned it.
I lost the pictures and music icons on the places menu. When I browse the folders from nautilus I see the icons, but when I click on the places menu I see the regular folder icon and not the special pictures icon or music icon
I have recently installed Faenza icon theme and just began to notice the inconsistency of icon emblems being displayed by compiz.Attached image shows the emblems of Chromium, Nautilus and Comix are that of the default icons, while Empathy andCompizConfigSettingsManager displayed the custom icon correctly. The dock displays all apps' icons correctly though. The issue does not occur exclusively to Application Switcher (Alt+Tab), it also occurs with Scale (Super+W), Shift Switcher (Super+Tab).
I tried xdg-desktop-icon command. It does install a shortcut. The shortcut works when double clicked. But the shortcut is shown as a standard icon, not the icon defined in the .desktop file. Do I miss something?
I'm looking for a way to may the open windows show just an icon on the taskbar instead of the icon/text/rectangle that's default. Something similar to Windows 7.
Is anyone else seeing the default icon in GNOME Shell instead of the usual Firefox icon? I am talking about the default icon that looks like a purple diamond.
It always shows a same icon, for every application which shows message tray icon. I just did some shell extension work after fresh installation of F15, nothing related on message tray. Don't know how to change it back.Dose anyone knows how to customize message tray icon for gnome-shell?
Kwallet is off. Then I install a wireless device under WPA. Wired icon starts to change to wireless icon, but does not and goes back to wired icon. Hovering pointer over wired icon shows wired device installed as well as wireless device. How do I keep the wireless icon in place after installing WPA to wireless device?
I have just created an 11.3 64 bit image using susestudio. All seems well but would like to customize the desktop via my script that I have added. My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?
I'm trying to add .desktop file for my application but I'm stuck with very strange problem.I created 48x48 icon for my program called etmmanager.png.I created .desktop file according to specifications:
Code: [Desktop Entry] X-SuSE-translate=true Categories=Application;Utility;X-SuSE-TimeUtility; Comment=ETM Manager for time logging Exec=etmmanager code....
My problem is that icon is not working in menu! I can find my program in Utilities->Time->ETM Manager and this is what I wanted, but there is no icon for the program.
It starts working if I specify absolute path in etmmanager.desktop file like Code: Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/etmmanager.png About my system - Opensuse 11.1 KDE 4.2
I have d/l and am using an icon theme I got from gnome-look. I like all the icons except for a few, specifically the trash, and would like to change them but I can't figure out how. I d/l an empty and full trash icon. I looked in the /home/username/.icons/themename folder and found the two trash icons that came with the theme (they were in ~/.icons/themename/scalable/places). Changed the names of the ones I d/l and replaced those current ones with them.how to do this? I would also like to change the Menu Bar icon back to the gnome foot.
