View 3 RepliesI wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"

My Home Folder contents are shown on Desktop and if I delete them from Desktop, they are also deleted from the Home Folder. I don't understand why this is happening.
Also, from the side pane in Explorer, the option of Home Folder is not present any more. When ever I go to Home Folder, on the side pane is shows that I am on desktop and the location bar shows that I am in Home Folder.

Been digging around and not finding anything that quite works.
Background: I had an existing 10.10 install and 10.04 on another partition. When I installed the 10.04 I told it to use the existing /home partition which is also being used by the 10.10 install. All good, both users have directories with all their data in the same /home partition.
Issue: So, as the 10.04 was 32bit (experimenting but another story) I decided I would replace with 10.04 64bit. All went well except when I did the manual partitioning I screwed up and instead of setting the existing /home partition to 'use but don't format' - which I think is what I must have done last time - I left it as 'don't use and don't format'. So, obviously, now the new 10.04 install has its /home inside /, which I don't want. I want it on the existing /home partition as it was with the previous 10.04 install.
Question(s): Is there any simple(ish) way of doing this without a reinstall? Not a major problem as I have only just installed and can do it again without losing anything but time, but I would like to figure out a way to do it without if possible.I want to essentially move the /home/user directory (rather than the /home) and make it /media/home/user inside the existing partition. Seems easy enough on the surface but becomes involved as I investigate.Ubuntu 10.04 minimal install with Xfce DE.

Actually, there are two shared folders that I want to do this with. I want to be able to launch the script and automatically copy all the contents of each folder into two separate folders on my ubuntu desktop. For example;
Lets say that I have Shared Folders A1 and A2 on my networked XP system and I have Folders B1 and B2 on my Ubuntu desktop. I want the script to automatically copy the contents of A1 into B1 and likewise for A2 and B2. During the copying, I want the script set up such that any pre-existing files in the B1 & B2 folders will automatically get overwritten by the ones copied from A1 & A2.Is there any possibilities of me achieving this?
I installed Fedora 12 x64. Now everytime I start my Linux the .gvfs directory in my /home/Razorblade -dir is corrupted. So I have to reboot and start an Linux LiveCD, mount my home partition and delete this folder. After that I can login normally. Symptoms: I am able to login normally, start a browser, start my mail client, list the contents of subfolders of /home/Razorblade/... - everything fine. But as soon as I want to list the contents of my /home/Razorblade folder - nothing but this turning blue thing around the curser. The command line does nothing after "ll /home/Razorblade", sometimes even crashes and closes. As root I am able to do "ll /home/Razorblade" And this is what I get:

How to move hidden folder from /home to another location - on another partition? Is it possible? I'd like to move some folders for example ./thunderbird or so that I wouldn't need to make a backup. Or at least is it possible that program can right files to two folders, or that everything from /home./thunderbird would copy automatically to ./thunderbird on another partition every time there is a change? Is it possible to write a script or something? I use luckybackup but I would like to be able to forget about backups and make script or program to do it for me.

I have heard that there is a way to copy your home folder over to the next release and all of the data and program settings will remain intact. I have tried some research on the subject but everything I have found has been extremely confusing. I want to do a fresh install (as my updater has been failing time and time again and asking for partial upgrades etc). Instead of creating a new partition for the home folder, would it be possible to move it to an external drive and copy it back over (I have tried to copy it to the external but I get some errors even in sudo)?

Each time I'm moving my new files and directories from my local slackware PC to my NAS (Linux based) in the LAN.
This NAS is 24/7 online and I can access it from the net.More than that it's backed up every day.
I was thinking of making my home directory directly in this NAS.
I didn't made a separate partition for my Home during the installation of slackware in the PC.
How do you do this without breaking all the links and preferences in /home? Does the system take care of everything? Has anyone done it or is it actually system crippling?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running out of disk space in root, so I decide to move /usr/lib64 directory to other partition by creating moving the whole directory to new location and create a softlink in the old location. What I'm planning to do is:
1. Copy the whole directory to new location
2. Make sure if there's no problem in the copy process
3. Create a softlink in the old location pointing to the new location.
However, when I'm comparing the old location and the new location using du command, there's some discrepancies between those two where the new location contain bigger size than the old one. How is this possible?
Is this the proper way to save disk space by creating a softlink?
Wondering if its possible to have a User's home folder that resides in a different partition (could be ntfs or ext). I don't mean mounting /home on a different partition. The home directory will still be available for adding more users but I'd like to have a specific User's folder away from /home

I want to move my home directory to a separate partition so I can install the new versions of Ubuntu without losing my data. And while I'm at it, what other important directories should I move to separate partitions? And how do I do it? I'm guessing that the /boot directory should also be moved to its own partition too, yes? Because it has the GRUB in it, and if I removed Ubuntu to make way for a newer version of Ubuntu, I'll just get an error because the computer can't find the GRUB that doesn't exist anymore, right? And also, if I move those important yet-to-be-listed directories to their own separate partitions, how large should those partitions be?
I don't want to miss out on the upcoming Lucid Lynx (If it will work in the first place, of course ) By the way, I have an Ubuntu-Windows XP dual-boot system. I'll attach a screenshot of my partition table from GPartEd. You can see that I have about 300 GB. The largest partition is Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAnyways, I recently got into the whole HTPC scene, and picked up an Acer Revo for my self, with a media center OS (XBMC) that was apparently modded from Ubuntu. Keep in mind that I can only use the terminal for any of this, as the GUI is just for video settings, etc.
So, XBMC just totally crashed on me, and the GUI stopped working. The files were still there, I just couldn't watch them. After many hours of tinkering, I decided to just reinstall XBMC, but make two partitions, and then move my movies and stuff to the new, working partition, and afterwards, delete the old, non working one.
I just don't know how to move from one partition to another.
So, can someone explain, in absolute layman terms, how to move my "Movies" folder from my first partition, to the New one?
I would like to move a user's home directory to a different disk. Is there a "clean" way to do this? Specifically, is it safe to just copy all the .* files to the new destination and then change the home in the user config? Or are there maybe environment entries with absolute paths which will cause problems with this strategy?

But Anaconda wouldn't accept mounting point for /home.I went on anyway.Fedora got set up and run moothly.However, /home resided in / with only 10 GB left.And the /home partition could be seen as a separate disk with its 176 GB.This is /etc/fstab:

Im using suse 11.1 with /home on a separate partition. To move my /home to a larger partition it looked easy to use Yast partitioner. I copied all /home/ files first to the new partition and backed-up fstab.
with Yast I unmounted /dev/sdb6 = /home and mounted it to /local
then unmounted /dev/sda4 = mynewhomepartition and mounted it to /home
checking the new fstab it looked fine but after a restart it did not work and I got an error. resetting the original fstab resetted the system as it used to be. My question is: why does it not work, are there (hidden) files with the old or other settings?.
