I have installed ubuntu on my notebook, and there are 4 partitons in the hdd, all are NTFS, only one is ext4.
the problem is i deleted some hidden folders(in ubuntu which are not hidden, such as recyclebin and file information table folders) in ntfs partitions, now i need to reinstall the windows 7 back, i have a doubt that even windows will ever recognize those partitions again?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently switching to a new laptop that will be my main machine and currently I use a laptop and a desktop on a daily basis. The laptop will continue to be used by another member of my family but the desktop will no longer have any use (well I might later build a new desktop but this one has finished his service).
The machine in question has:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.4GHz
4x512MB DDR-400 (2GB Total)
Seagate 200GB SATA 7200RPM 8MB Cache Hard Drive
Geforce 6600GT 256MB GDDR3
Since I will no longer use it as a desktop/working machine I'd like to set it up as a home server. However I can't decide which OS to use for that. I have access to all Windows Versions since XP/2003 (with the exception of Windows Home Server) and I have some knowledge using both Windows and Linux so that's not a problem on my choice.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've come across this rare issue, I have a friend that uses some software that is particularly slow in Windows 7, the best compatibility is in Windows XP, I told him to make a partition and have both OSes in the computer, at which he replied: "Could I have a different OS for each user?", it seemed like a good question to me, so is that possible?, suppose that I login and it boots me to Vista, then I loggout and Linus Torvalds comes and logins and boots him into Ubuntu, he gets bored and logs out, afterwards my friend comes and logs in, booting into XP, summarizing:

I wished to know if I can install windows 7 on my system when I am already running Linux Mint 10(as the only operating system on my machine). That configuration is called a dual boot. If you install Win7 first (or it is already present), THEN install linux, you will find that grub notices both and you will not need to mess with the MBR. The better solution is to load mint, add VirtualBox, and install Win7 into a virtual machine. Then you get to run Linux and Windows AT THE SAME TIME!

One of drives I have mapped is my Linux home directory (We have separate windows and linux accounts and home directories here). When I view it from windows, all of the files and folders beginning with . are shown, as would be expected. (Although . and .. aren't in any folder)
Just wondering if there is a way to tell windows to not show anything starting with a dot. I was hoping there's a registry entry or something that defines what a 'protected operating system file' is, so I could put dot files in the same category as thumbs.db etc.
I was wondering if there is some way to determine when a file finishes writing to a directory on both Windows and Linux (obviously, they will probably be two different commands). This is mostly so that, instead of constantly polling a directory for new non-temp files, I can set up a program to simply listen for the completion of a write-to-disk (it seems better to do things that way).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI still have to dual boot with Windows (for now!) but having the various NTFS partitions show up in Nautilaus, etc. is a problem.Also I would like to share some data between Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10 but I cannot create any more partitions due to well know limitations. In my case I already have 3 primary Windows partitions that I want to keep and 1 primary Linux with ext4 and swap as logicals for Ubuntu. BTW my laptop had all 4 primaries used up an I got rid 1 for Ubuntu. I could get rid of more but really do not want to now.
I found many great ideas and suggestions here in the forums but could not find exactly what I was looking for so I cobbled together a couple of I ideas and I think I have a working solution.First to hide a Windows partition and protect it this works great when you add this line to fstab:

Of course change your partition to the correct one and make sure the /Windows directories are created.I have used this many times and it works great except I want to have access to 1 or 2 directories without exposing the whole drive.I turned to symbolic links to help solve but when sda2 is "hidden" with the above there is a rights problem for my normal user. I could probably solve it with umask somehow but I just did this instead:

I found this allows me to access the directory but it is still hidden from Nautilaus. I am guessing it is because it is mounted in a location it does not normally look in.After this I created a symbolic link to the directories I want access like this:

ln -s /Windows/sda2/Temp /home/myuser/windir
Note I did not use sudo here because that was causing me rights problems at one time. This is permanent until you rm the windir file since symbolic links are just special files.
So now I can access windir in my home directory on the NTFS partition without me accidentally messing up my other Windows system files. If I try hard I can mess it up but this provides just enough protection for me. I can also drag the link to my desktop or the Naultilaus left nav pane and it acts like a regular directory.I sure there are a 100 ways to achieve what I wanted to do but thought I would share this method since it took me a while to figure it out.
I formatted with mkfs.nts a USB 500 GB external drive. Under Linux when I connect it to the USB port it's recognized and works. Under windowz 7 home is's seen in the device list but not in the computer window. I can't do anything with it apart eject it. View 4 Replies View RelatedThe bad news comes that active support for Mint6 is set to end Apr. 30. The worse news is I don't know what to do about it. Complicating this is that I have about 5 drive partitions and duplicate Mint6 operating systems because of password problems and just partitioning the drive and rebooting the OS instead of trying to fix the issue. I hear good things about Mint8, but my 80 Gig drive is getting pretty thin on partitions. I know there must be a way to safely remove the partitions and duplicate operating systems. I just don't know how to do it.
