Ubuntu :: Convert A Lucid Installation To UNR?
May 15, 2010
I want to convert a Lucid installation to UNR, so am I right in thinking I can download the interface from Synaptic to do it. Or is it necessary to download the full version of UNR?

After upgrading to Lucid I get the following warnings which I did not have before:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
These occur when I start emacs and xpdf. On searching I see people are adding font paths to their xorg.conf file but on looking at mine there is no longer a font section. Also I have few directories fonts/X11/usr/share/fonts/X11$ ls misc/util/. I'm assuming the above folders and xorg.conf file are correct.

What's the procedure for updating from Lucid Beta 2 to Lucid LTS? Is it just "apt-get upgrade"? Or would I be better off with a clean install?

I recently upgraded from Karmic to Lucid via the Update Manager. I would like to upgrade further by switching from 32 Bit to 64 Bit. I downloaded the Lucid 64 Bit ISO and wrote an install disk. When I reboot the computer with the install disk nothing happens.

An easy way to convert wav files into mp3 (or ogg).
$ sudo-apt-get install nautilus-script-audio-convert mpg321 vorbis-tools lame nautilus-script-manager.
after that run
$ nautilus-script-manager enable ConvertAudioFile
Now, when you right click on audio file, under 'scripts', you will see ConvertAudioFile option.

I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

How do you convert a 9.04 .deb to a 9.10? I'm not sure if I even need to, but before I install an older package I would like to know if there are general rules. I have a camera software package that has yet to be updated, and I can't find the source code, but can find the Jaunty .deb. are there any pointers out there?

I have a lot of .flac files downloaded from several sites. Most of them come with a .cue file, and the .jpg with the cover, etc. It seems it is the intention of the uploader that one rebuilds the original CDDA. However, if I had a stand-alone CD/DVD player with flac I would hardly see the point of converting the flac to cdda. Furthermore, I could even play the flacs with a software player although, in this case, the audio quality would not be so good due to the noise picked up by the signal from the PC digital circuits.

I have been using ubuntu 10.04 through wubi installation and would like to now convert it to a dedicated partition .
On searching I found LVPM does that. It converts the wubi install to a dedicated partition including all the softwares and settings.
Unfortunately it doesn't support ubuntu 10.04 currently .
Can anyone suggest any alternate way to achieve the same or a patch for LVPM .

Canon MX320, MX330, MX860 printer installation on Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit. I am sure Ubuntu Lucid is similar. Once I upgraded to Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit I found that getting a Canon Pixma MX printer installed was not going to be easy. So I thought it help others if I posted my experience here. To pull this off you will need both the Debian package, (.deb), and the source package from either
Canon Europe: [URL]... Or Canon Australia: [URL]... NOTE: The only reason to get the source is to access the ppd files. They are in the Debian package but it is a lot more work to walk newbies through unpacking the .deb. Since there are errors in the source code it makes impossible to compile a driver. Therefore, you will need to install the 32bit Debian package and force the architecture, then add the correct printer driver from the ppd file in the source package. While these instructions worked for me there are a few assumption I make which mat affect your outcome. My MX860 has a wireless network connection.
In other words I have no idea if this will or will not work on a USB attached printer. (If someone would be kind enough to post back if they get that configuration working that would be cool.) The other assumption is that the general reader is relatively new to Lunix and the command line interface. The commands were cut and pasted from my working kconsole, so they should work for anyone.Here we go:........

I have recently installed Netbook Remix 10.04 on my MSi Wind u100, and so it dual-boots XP, as well as Netbook Remix. I'm not a huge fan of netbook remix, and I find it really doesn't add a whole lot to my netbook experience. I was quite surprised when setting up evolution and empathy to find a number of the windows didn't fit on my 1024x600 screen.As such I would like to put normal Ubuntu 10.04 onto my netbook. What would be the easiest way to do it? Should I just install it from a LiveCD, or is there a better way?

I'm about to change colleges soon, and my new college (Full Sail University) requires us to have MacBooks. The university distributes the MacBooks to us with loads of class-related software pre-loaded. I'm unsure if they give us recovery discs for the Mac installation and the software.I have used Macs before, but I'm not all that Savy with them. What I need is a walkthrough on how to do certain things:
I want to backup the hard drive of the Mac, including the OS, and all the included programs.I want to wipe the hard drive, and install Ubuntu as a single OS.I want to take the backed up OSX and run that in VirtualBox, with full functionality: (internet, video making, graphic work, multimedia, etc)After that, I want to install Windows 7 as another guest OS, but I think I can handle that.

Our business is replacing Microsoft Windows with Ubuntu (Linux) but there is one or two problems with the main computer in the office. One the main computer is my Dad's computer and the only thing he does differently then the other computers is that he does his accounting which he uses Simply Accounting and I don't think Simply Accounting is compatible with Ubuntu/Linux.
I found a great, simple accounting program for Ubuntu called Eqonomize. It doesn't have to be that one, but anyone where we can convert are data from Simply Account to an accounting program with Ubuntu.

I have two partition in my netbook (plus swap):
/dev/sda4 with Ubuntu 10.4 /dev/sda5 with Centos 5.5
I use Ubuntu obviously. Centos is there because I need to run some test on that distro. The problem is Centos uses Grub and Ubuntu uses Grub2.
This is /boot/grub/menu.lst from Centos:
Code:
default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,4)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title CentOS (2.6.18-194.17.4.el5xen)
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/xen.gz-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5
module /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5xen ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet
module /boot/initrd-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5xen.img .....
This was generated running update-grub2 and grub-install under Ubuntu. It's not working. It gives me something like bad magic number. How can I convert the grub1 entry in a grub2 shape?

I have a very old laptop with no CD and no Floppy and a BIOS that won't boot from a USB device.I wanted to install Ubuntu on it though so I pulled the hard drive and connected it to my Macbook via a USB-to-PATA adapter. I booted the Macbook off the live CD and tried to install Ubuntu to the USB drive but the install wanted to update the boot partition on my Macbook which I would prefer not to do (I run Ubuntu on the Macbook in a VM). Instead, I used the Startup Disk Creator in Ubuntu 10.04 to make the hard drive from the old laptop an Ubuntu Startup Disk. I put it back in the laptop and it works fine, but when you boot it asks if you want to install Ubuntu and of course you can't because there is no available disk.
I thought about pulling the drive and doing this all again but splitting the drive into two partitions so I could make one partition the startup disk and install to the other, but I was not sure this would work. The disk in question is only 12 GB so I don't have a lot of space to work with. Also, this particular laptop is a huge pain to get the drive out of so if I can somehow fix this without removing the drive again that would be awesome. If there was some way to just convert the startup disk to a "regular" installation that would be ideal.

After screwing up my current UNR install, I have decided to get a fresh installation of regular Lucid without all the BS that comes with the netbook remix, BUT when I boot from usb and start the process I can't get past the keyboard selection phase... it just hangs there forever. I tried making a usb with the alternate text based version too but it halts at the same spot, namely detecting hdd's. Now, I've installed the UNR previously from usb without any problems so something is wrong here, I just haven't got any wiser from reading whats online either. I checked the forums etc but didn't find any answers... I'm on an Asus Eee 1005PE by the way.
