Ubuntu Installation :: Convert Startup Disk To Normal Instalation?

I have a very old laptop with no CD and no Floppy and a BIOS that won't boot from a USB device.I wanted to install Ubuntu on it though so I pulled the hard drive and connected it to my Macbook via a USB-to-PATA adapter. I booted the Macbook off the live CD and tried to install Ubuntu to the USB drive but the install wanted to update the boot partition on my Macbook which I would prefer not to do (I run Ubuntu on the Macbook in a VM). Instead, I used the Startup Disk Creator in Ubuntu 10.04 to make the hard drive from the old laptop an Ubuntu Startup Disk. I put it back in the laptop and it works fine, but when you boot it asks if you want to install Ubuntu and of course you can't because there is no available disk.
I thought about pulling the drive and doing this all again but splitting the drive into two partitions so I could make one partition the startup disk and install to the other, but I was not sure this would work. The disk in question is only 12 GB so I don't have a lot of space to work with. Also, this particular laptop is a huge pain to get the drive out of so if I can somehow fix this without removing the drive again that would be awesome. If there was some way to just convert the startup disk to a "regular" installation that would be ideal.
Is it possible to convert Ubuntu 11.04 i386 iso to an alternate iso by any means?? Not that I have bandwidth restrictions, just our ISP doesn't want us to use over a certain amount.. Weirdest uncapped ever right.. So can I convert the normal iso to an alternate iso??
I have recently installed Netbook Remix 10.04 on my MSi Wind u100, and so it dual-boots XP, as well as Netbook Remix. I'm not a huge fan of netbook remix, and I find it really doesn't add a whole lot to my netbook experience. I was quite surprised when setting up evolution and empathy to find a number of the windows didn't fit on my 1024x600 screen.As such I would like to put normal Ubuntu 10.04 onto my netbook. What would be the easiest way to do it? Should I just install it from a LiveCD, or is there a better way?
i was install wine with the soft ware center when my computer crashed, now i cant uninstall it or cointinue the installation or unistall, when i do try to unistall i press the unistall icon nothing happens. when i go into the software center to try and reinstall it says waiting for other software managers to quit,
I have a double problem here. I had a problem with ubuntu which I more or less took care of but at the loss of much information but that is neither here nor there. The problem has to do with the here and now. I purchased a ubuntu 10.04 LTS CD. I installed it and partitioned it with my win xp. All seemed to go good but the problems seem to arrive when I booted to the other partition side.
I am able to select the windows xp side and hit enter and and boot to xp. However when I wanted to go to the ubuntu side of things this is where the problems happens. I click enter the ubuntu selection and this error shows up."Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. <windows root> system32hal.dllPlease re-install a copy of the above file."
The only way I can of getting to the ubuntu side is by inserting the ubuntu cd into the cd/dvd drive. However when I do I get this message."Installation Failed.The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now run so you may investigate the problem or try installing again."I am hoping that someone here will be able to assist me in finding an solution to my dilemma.
I have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" Minimal CD. I would like to use the Startup Disk Creator to put it on bootable USB. when I run the Startup Disk Creator and click on "other" to select the downloaded .iso, my selection is ignored and does not show in the "Source disc" list of the dialog box.Is there another way to create a startup USB from the minimal CD download?
I often run various computers from my Ubuntu 10.04 USB startup disk. Every now and then, people get interested and want a copy of their own. Since I have installed a few extras (VLC, codecs, flash etc) on the disk, not just the out of the box 10.04, I would like to create a clone of the USB startup disk, to give away. How can it be done?
I'm trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on a new Dell studio 1535. Since I have 4GB of RAM I went with the 64bit version. I can get to the menu where I select to check disk, install, try without changing etc... However when I tried to check the disc integrity I saw the Ubuntu logo for about ten minutes and then let it sit for another 20 minutes, and all I saw was a blank screen. I then tried making another CD and came up with the same results. I then tried to install and at first it was like before, but then i started getting different error messages the majority had the form: [ 771.744543] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 337015another looked like:[ 1244.029631] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0 sector 673592a few said something about SQUASHFS.I have tried three different CD's I looked at the hash and they matched up so the file is fine. I downloaded the 32bit version and I'm going to try that just to see if it works.
So i created a USB startup disk on my 32g flash. Worked fine until I went to update the packages on it. Now it wont boot up and it also fails when trying to install on another machine.
I was using the 9.10 version of Ubuntu, and everything was ok. So I decided to update to 10.04, by update manager, and it not works pretty well. So I decided to reinstall my ubuntu. In my PC I also have a instalation of Windows XP, my father and sister uses it. The installation went well, no problems, Lucid Lynx is working fine. But in the grub screen, if you choose Win XP, the CPU starts to whisthle continuously, and the only thing you can do is restart.
I have been reading about it, but do not find the exactly same problem. I have posted a thread in a portuguese forum (im from Brasil) and have no good responses. Sorry about the bad English, I dont have to much experience writing.
When I attempt to create a USB Live Xubuntu setup via the Startup Disk Creator, the settings for the Persistent drive are disabled/gray. When I perform the setup, no extra space is reserved for the persistant drive.
I've used the same USB drive for Live Ubuntu installations in the past and had no problems.
Does the USB Startup Disk Creator work with Xubuntu?
I want to install Ubuntu onto a partition on my external hard drive, but my CD burner is broken so I can't just boot up with a live CD and do it that way. So can I install Ubuntu onto my external hard drive with the Startup Disk Creator that comes installed on Ubuntu? And if not is there another way I can do this?
I've got a removeable disk which I want to mount on startup automatically at mountpoint "/backupsystem". If' it's not there I would like to have no error message. Actually after upgrading to 10.4 I get the message: Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.". But I don't wand this if the disk is not there that's OK for me. How would I configure fstab to achieve this?
I want to make a live USB drive, perhaps even 1 with its own GRUB and a choice of operating systems..Its 16gb so it will fit..or maybe just install multiple desktop environments so I can switch depending on the resoruces of the computer I am using..Gnome>E17>LXDE.But I want it to be a regular account with a root/administrator password, ect. When I use the Startup disk creator or Unetbootin I find that the results are pretty limited. I might as well be using a live CD, but thats not ideal. Alternately, when I just install normally it doesnt always load, even when I hit F8 and tell it to boot from my USB drive.Knoppix based distros seem to work better than Ubuntu based distros in this regard, but I dont want Knoppix I want Ubuntu/Mint and friends.Finally, I have sometimes been having problems 'mounting' or using 'swapon'. Even when I turn on Swap with Gparted Im still not getting the benefit of the large swap area I have created..is this because of how the operating system uses swap? Is there a live distro that will save files and settings to swap before using up ram, by default? If not, is there a way to change the behavior of Ubuntu Live CD?

I'm trying to start an Oracle Integration server as user "oracle" at system startup and my approach was to place a couple of lines in /etc/rc.localsu oracle/home/oracle/startallSomething is not quite right about this as it seems to leave some processes owned by root.
Whenever I am busy reading or writing large files, or large sum of files, my computer is unresponsive. Screens are getting greyed-out and I just can sit there and wait until the reading/writing is done. This is not caused by the CPU which is overstressed because it is not. Look at the attachments and you will see the CPU is used for about 20%. When these pictures were captured the computer was using hellanzb to unrar a long list of rar-files. When you look at my signature you see the computer is not bad at all, just disk-access is slow. I can transfer files with a maximum speed of 30MB/s. Is that normal or is it very slow? I don't know the numbers. I have 2 SATA disks. O.S. is Mint 9-Isadora, based on Ubuntu 10.04 and I use the 64-bits version.
I have two pc's that I've recently converted to Lenny boxes, and I've noticed that whenever there's a lot of disk IO, one of my cores (both pc's have dual core cpu's) jump to 100%. Is this normal? They're both amd64, and I think both of them should be using the AHCI SATA driver.
If you need any more information about my setup, let me know.
Problem is that I can't burn disk using nero linux as normal user. If I try to do so, it tries to create a .nrg image in the drive rather than burning those files in the disk. But if i run nero as super user then it works okay. If I run it as normal itan't even recognize my burner
I used "Startup Disk Creator" to make a bootabel USB drive with 11.04. I followed the guide #2 from (I use 10.04). Everything went fine while making this. I re-booted and selected this USB and selected the "Try it" button. I looked at how 11.04 looks like for about 10 seconds and did not do anything and re-booted.Now there is onlyblack screen with absolutely no text and there is nothing I can do [URL]
The only thing out of the ordinary I noticed is that when I clicked "Erase disk" I ended up with a choice of two: /dev/sdc (with no indication of free space but a capacity of 983.0MB), and /dev/sdc1 which showed 288MB free before I erased it and a capacity of 980.4MB.
This app has never worked on any system I've tried it on, but this particular machine is an LTS (10.04) with recent hardware so I'd like to get it fixed if possible.
i have installed Salix 13.1 LXDE version (Salix 13.1 is compatible with Slackware 13.1). I must use various external hard disks formatted with NTFS. The hard disks are automatically recognized and mounted with PCmanFM file manager, but only user root can write on them. How can I allow normal users to write on automounted external ntfs drives?
Ive been running VirtualBox with a windows XP installation for some time, on an opensuse 11.0 host for some time. Recently, however ive been having issues with suse, and want to take my virtual XP and make it a primary bootable physical partition, on a second disk
I know it can be done, but im not finding how exactly.
What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool
How can i move my virtual machine to a physical, bootable partition on a second drive?
I have a bunch of disk images, made with ddrescue, on an EXT partition, and I want to reduce their size without losing data, while still being mountable. How can I fill the empty space in the image's filesystem with zeros, and then convert the file into a sparse file so this empty space is not actually stored on disk?
For example:
> du -s --si --apparent-size Jimage.image 120G Jimage.image > du -s --si Jimage.image 121G Jimage.image
This actually only has 50G of real data on it, though, so the second measurement should be much smaller.
This supposedly will fill empty space with zeros: cat /dev/zero > zero.file rm zero.file But if sparse files are handled transparently, it might actually create a sparse file without writing anything to the virtual disk, ironically preventing me from turning the virtual disk image into a sparse file itself. :) Does it? Note: For some reason, sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=./zero.file works when cat does not on a mounted disk image.
I have a Dell Latitude D620 which came with Windows XP. I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on the laptop so it can dual boot but I can't connect to the internet.I have a dynamic IP allocated by my broadband service provider which I access by a wired Netgear DM111P router (not cable). It still works fine when booting up windows.I've read through lots of posts by others trying to find a solution as the 9.10 install has just been done and I've not changed anything.
My tentative assessment is the laptop, when running Ubuntu, is not communicating with the router as there seems to be no IP address allocated by the router.
Kde does not start after slackware 13.0 instalation. Mouse just stop and the computer freeze. When I type startx Kde try to start, but everything stop. Does anybody know what could be this ? What log should I look ?
I'm running Ubuntu on a USB startup disk I created on a USB stick for recovery purposes. I cannot use wifi on my netbook if I boot from he USB. Why is this? Is there any way I can make it work again? (wifi is fine when I boot normally)
This utility doesn't work it won't format and won't boot the one time I got it working. Now it has broken my usb flash drive as gparted won't format it to anything . I tried the alternate unetbootin program and now it won't see the flash drive because the startup program trashed it. I still think the external usb devices is the most frustrating part of ubuntu and needs serious fixing. My new netbook install won't see any of my external drives.
