Fedora Networking :: Manage The Power To Wifi Adapter In F10 Like In Windows?
May 30, 2009im using fedora 10 with gnome on a laptop, i want to increase power to my wifi adapter as im only getting 40% connection strength to the nearest wifi AP (about 20 feet) in windows under power management there is a slider with best performance against battery life, is there a similar setup in fedora 10? ps, if explained fairly well, i dont mind shell scripting (bash) and compiling.

Mar 13, 2010I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

Apr 26, 2011my laptop has a bad power connector on the motherboard so its constantly making the "power manager" box pop up and it annoys the hell out of me. since its loose it will keep popping up over and over. i either have to click the webpage to put it in the background or click "ok" or "cancel" 20 times to close them all. i like the dark grey box that pops up in the corner but the one in the middle of the screen sucks. is there someway to disable it?

Dec 23, 2010I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 series card. I need proper OpenGL support, so it appears I need the fglrx driver. After I install it, I experience very odd freezes related to the power cable:
- It freezes if I rapidly take the plug in and out a few times
- It freezes if I run on battery power for a random amount of time between 10 and 20 minutes. This happens if I boot up on battery power, or if I take out the plug while it's on (assuming the first kind of freeze doesn't happen)
EDIT: I have changed absolutely nothing about the drivers, but now those specific freezes don't happen. Instead, I just got a random freeze, while the power cable was in and not being touched.

Apr 24, 2010have Karmic Coala runing on an IBM thinkpad X.41. Works great. My home network is all ethernet so I have a router , CAT5 cable to laptop.A coupleof times I've had power outages The laptop carries on as it's on battery power. When the power comes back , the router restarts, it reconnects after a few minutes but the laptop doesn't reconnect to the network seamlessly. On some other Linux distro's I've had running /etc/init.d/network restart will refresh everything. On Ubuntu I have /etc/init.d/networks but running restart In the end I needed to reboot the laptop to get the network back on.Perhaps this is a power management issue with the laptop ethernet card i.e losing power powers down the card and it never comes back up properly.

The problem I have is (since I've installed Xubuntu) every time I start up my laptop it just hangs with a little flashing white stripe in the top of the left corner (like every start up). Then when I shut down the laptop using the power button and start it up again it works. How can this be possible? On start up, it hangs, while on the restart it always works. Which means I have to restart my laptop every single time.

Aug 1, 2011I just installed 11.04 on my laptop and the wireless works fine connecting to a AT&T 2Wire router when the ac power adapter is connected. When running on battery power I stay connected to the router but barely any information is transmitted. ie. if i restart the router connection on my computer I can load a web page like google.com then nothing else will work unless I restart the connection again. If I am right next to the router it will continue to work but very slow ( takes about a minute to load ......com when it only takes 2 seconds on ac power ). I figured out that this is not connected with some specific action (e.g. some app crash), it can freeze 1 minute after start or 10 minutes, I think it's random. Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable 3D (dri) In Lucid / Switch Off 3d Dri On Laptop To Save Power?
Jul 25, 2010I want to switch off 3d i.e. dri on my laptop to save power. There is a bug in the intel video driver that makes it generate excess wakeups and thus increase power consumption. I don't use 3d so this is very annoying.
I have tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to insert an "NODRI" option in the "Device" section and have commented out both of the "load dri" commands in the "Modules" section. No go. When I look in the xorg log, these changes are seen but not acted on. The system appears to have hardwired defaults set somewhere which are difficult to override. It appears to be a new issue because with Karmic one still had control with xorg.conf.
Just generally I don't like changes like this because it is not documented on the wiki where and how to change the defaults in Lucid. Linux was supposed to be easily configurable so IMHO this is a step backwards.
Ubuntu Installation :: When Pull The Power Cable From The Laptop Screen Freezes
Aug 11, 2011I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T520 laptop with Nvidia NVS 4200m Graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 11.04.
Before I installed Ubuntu 11.04 I had went to my bios and disabled Nvidia Optiums and changed the graphics to Discrete Graphics. Then inserted my Ubuntu 11.04 CD and installed.
With this I had gotten unity to work. However when I pull the power cable from the laptop my screen freezes. Also if press "FN"+ Home or END to change the brightness of the screen my screen freezes and no longer able to move the mouse or press anything on keyboard.
Did anyone ever run into this problem and or fix this issue? I can get the graphics working properly with Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity with a Nvidia NVS 4200m graphics card.

Oct 31, 2010I have an issue running the openSUSE 11.2 liveCD KDE on a Dell Vostro 3500. It boots fine to command line. It seems to boot fine to KDE (I assume it doesn't hang cause the power button turns the laptop off without holding it). However the only thing I can see is a black screen. I've checked the CD with the tool included to the CD. The hardware of the laptop seems to be fine as well

I would like to boot to linux using underclocked speeds and have Windows running full blast. Is there a way to run Linux completely in RAM?
