Ubuntu :: Clean Up After A Failed Installation / Error Cannot Locate /usr/src/btusb?
Oct 15, 2010
Made a mistake while installing btusp for macbook. I know now that I shouldn't have deleted the installed files, I should have run "apt-get remove", but it's too late. Now whenever I install software or updates I get an annoying message about the btusb packages:Error! Cannot locate /usr/src/btusb-0.0.1.dkms.tar.gz.
File does not exist.

I got the /boot is to small error when I tried the preupgrade from FC 11 to 12. I would like to clean out all the installation files and try again with the recommended fixes. Preupgrade just reboots the box no and restarts FC11 up so I need to start over fresh.
Where are all the files that I need to clean up for the preupgrade?

I installed a command line version of Ubuntu 10.10 using the alternate install disk. To suit my needs, I have to install the gcc C compiler in this environment. When connected under root, I enter the command: 'apt-get install gcc'. The error 'E: unable to locate package gcc' is then displayed on screen. how to install gcc? Is this package available from the alternate install disk or do we have to download it. If I dowbload a tar file, where should I copy it to to be able to have the install application see it?

I reformatted my root partition and boot partitions and installed ,averick but zhen I boot I get a grub 15 error. I might have made a mistake on the partitioning screen zhen I selected /dev/dsa6 for the GRUB bootloader - this is my dedicated /boot partition - and don't know how to fix it now
my current fstab is code...
By mounting all partitions one by one I can see now that everything has moved around so that
sda is the bigbastard drive - 500GB - that was sdb previously
sdb is supersize/basckup and was sdc before
the paritions on sda have moved to sdc
I have no idea hot to put everything back

I installed Lucid (clean install after several attempts at upgrading from Karmic failed), and I have an Intel 8xx video card. I was able to get Lucid installed by adding "xforcevesa" into the command line at startup. Now I would like to try changing my computer away from Vesa and seeing if I can try to get the i915 driver working.
That being said, I cannot figure out where to go to change my kernel boot configurations. Every tutorial I've found refers me to /boot/grub/menu.lst which I cannot find. Ever since I moved from Karmic to Lucid, I've regretted it as it seems like all the How-To documentation is no longer valid, everything has been changed and moved around.
I don't know why it is dumping me onto Vesa, or why my stupid driver was blacklisted; everything was working fine under Hardy, Jaunty, and Karmic. Why problems now? Does anyone know how I can get into my boot setings and replace "xforcevesa" with something that will make the intel driver work?

I ran a firmware test, after I discovered a bad memory stick on a 1 gb stick. Replaced my memory stick and just for grins ran a firmware test and I don't understand this:[Fail] Failed to locate HPET base [Fail] OS/2 memory hole test-The memory map has a memory hole between 15mb & 16mb.
Re-ran MEMTEST just to make sure my new memory was fine, no errors. My Linux OS appears to be running slower on boot-up than normal, What documentation there is on the internet on HPET is over my head.I ran SMART on the both drives. They were good. So I am a little stumpted.

I am trying to install 10.04 32bit onto a new 1.5TB harddrive. I had previously installed 10.04 64bit on an old drive in the same nmachine. I partitioned and formatted the new drive using the old system. I have a couple of windows partitions and restored Win2K images to them, 4 formated Ext3 partions for whever flavour of Linux appeals to me a swap and two huge NTFS Data (home) and work areas. I installed Grub on the new drive, it also has its own partition for boot config files. The old drive has now gone.
Grub2 boots OK and gives me option for all the OS's even the one that are gone, thats OK I can fix that later with grub-update. Win2K boots fine and I see my NTFS partitions.
Now I boot from the Live i386 CD and chosse to install Ubuntu. The only thing that not allowed to default is where to install. Specify partition manually, Choose a spare 20GB Ext3 and the swap is already there too. I let it reformat to Ext3 and mount as /. (In Advanced I let the install boot loader default to ticked on /dev/sda )
The install goes OK until I hit the pop-up "Installation Failed". The installed encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will be run etc etc..
I have tried this at least 10 times no. I downloaded and cut a new CD even though the old one worked fine on another box. Tried unticking the boot loader. Disable the floppy, removed the floppy.
I am relatively new to Ubuntu. Where do I look for the cause of the problem? I'll cut and paste the install log files in a moment.

A few week's back I ordered a Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and I recived it just yesterday. So I put it in the CD-ROM drive and rebooted my PC. First off when I went to install it, It gave me and error saying Installation failed because of an unrecoverible error. then I booted into the option "Try Ubuntu"and started searching for a solution for the error online. I found a forum that was talking about the unrecoverible error and it said "Boot into Try Ubuntu and click the installation icon at the desktop" I did. Then I gave my information and such and then it started installing. then when it hit 41% at copying files It gave me the error message saying that it failed and the error code was [errno 5] I tryed following other steps online and they were all a no-go.
_
Replaced CD-ROM drive with spare - failed
Moved Desktop to another envirement - failed
Disabled Floppy drive - failed
Move memory chip to another bank - failed
Mark first 3 options in boot menu - failed
I am only able to get online using the live CD because I was dumb enough to delete windows ):
DELL DIMENSION 2500

I logged on today to find my computer with a blank black screen when I walked back into the room. It appears that Ubuntu suddenly cannot find my HD anymore. I get through the grub screen and even past the little white Ubuntu 9.10 logo, but then no login box appears and when I press a key I get the terminal, where is says something to the effect of:
Error can not locate drive by-dev-id HD_BLAH ,
my Ubuntu partitioned drive of course. Is there any way to check that that drive is even still functioning. I pretty much have permanently switched over to Ubuntu, so it would suck to lose that drive.I really need some advice on what to do...should I just attempt to boot the live CD? (by attempt I mean my computer is so damn old that the CD and DVD drives are pretty much dead, and I'd be lucky to read a CD correctly because of this).

I'm getting the following error when booting from the 10.04 live CD: Installation Failed. The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again.
I checked the CD for defects, and even tried re-downloading/burning to a new disc, but got the same problem. I tried booting in to the LIVE session then installing from the desktop but I still got the same error. I have had 9.10 running on here fine, and after running a Kubuntu 9.10 disc I had to hand to check it would work, that installed fine (hence the auto-partitions you will see in my info dump below). Here is some information about my system, let me know if I've missed anything. I've also included a copy of the syslog below.

I am having trouble upgrading and updating. When updating the file downloads to 99% and then stops. The error message is:
[Code]...
I believe this has something to do with a power outage while upgrading a few days ago. Most of the install completed after rebooting, all except the three 'linux kernel image' files and a few others. Also, as a side issue, Flash plugin and Flex builder are no longer working. This may be unrelated. Does any one have any trouble shooting advice for the issue?

Trying to install net-snmp on a VM running rhel5. I did a 'rpm -qa |grep snmp' and it returned 'net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.el5' as already being installed.
So, I then ran 'rpm -ivh net-snmp-5.3.2.2-9.el5.1.x86_64rpm' and it returned an error: Failed dependencies: net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.el5 is needed.
Why isn't it recognizing that net-snmp-libs is already installed on the server?
