Made a persistent 10.10 usb to try out une - loved it, great job. Decided to install it together with the Windows7 already on my laptop. Did the standard installation - went well. Restarted without the persistent usb. And what starts up - Windows7. I was expecting the old menu (ala 9.10) which allowed me to choose whether I start W7 or Ubuntu. So can somebody please tell me how I get Ubuntu to start from disc and how I get to choose which os starts up. Surely Canonical's preference is not that I use W7?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop currently and my mom would like to have it on hers as well. However, she does not want to get rid of Windows 7, or use Wubi (for some reason). So, my only choice is to dual boot it. While I was installing it onto my laptop there was an option to choose the partitioning. There wasn't an option to do this on my her laptop though because you can only have 4 partitions on a hard drive apparently. The partitions are:
NAME (TYPE)
System (NTFS)
C: (NTFS)
Recovery (NTFS)
HP TOOLS (FAT32)
Is there anyway to backup a partition (Like Recovery) and make it bootable from a flash drive/CD? Or is there any other work around from this?

Starting up xubuntu 9.10 on my dual booted inspiron 1501 (vista) and the desktop pops up, but there's no taskbar or anything just the desktop. All this after fixing my grub [URL]. I popped up a terminal and installed tree to show me the filesystem. All my files are still there I then ran synaptic and tried to see if any packages were missing but I don't know much so now I'm stuck with another problem.

I'm running an 8.04 server and I'd like to have a gui option for my goddaughter to use. For various reasons I don't want to make any changes to the server and also for various reasons I'd like the gui desktop to be 9.10.
I had 9.10 running on another machine but the motherboard died on me. If I just slot that hdd into the machine, edit grub etc, will I be able to reconfigure for the different hardware or will it simply fail to boot? Wiping the drive and installing again wouldn't be the end of the world but it would save a lot of time if it's not necessary.

I've been using my laptop with an external LCD monitor attached to it at work (Philips 201E). And at home with a different external monitor (Samsung 2032BW). I have an ATI graphics card (HD3450), with Ati Catalyst drivers enabled and I'm using the Single display desktop (Multi-Desktop) seeting. At work I have the external monitor on the left and laptop on the right, while at home the other way around. So when I switch between the two setups, I just needed to go to Ati Catalyst Control Center, change the order of the displays, change the resolution (Home - 1680x1050, Work - 1440x900), reboot and it was all fine.
But since a while it doesn't work properly anymore:
At home it *still* works fine. At work it doesn't work. Sometimes it works for some reason, after a few resolution/setting changes in ACCC and reboots... it's very strange and annoying. Does anyone have any idea for fixing it? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the ATI restricted drivers and that seemed to make it work initially, but it still works just sometimes. This is my xorg.conf currently:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "amdcccle Layout"
Screen 0 "amdcccle-Screen[6]-0" 0 0
Screen "amdcccle-Screen[6]-1" 1280 0
EndSection
[Code]...

I'm using an Intel chipset GMA4500 and Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome. The monitor configuration tool does not seem to have an option to make the secondary screen a mirror image of the primary screen. It works fine when I connect my TV using HDMI as a second screen, but I want it to be a mirror of the primary, because some apps like Skype will only go "full screen" on the primary display.

Im running a wee Aspire One, 1024*600 with an external monitor 1024*768 (maverick desktop edition- 10.10) I have them set up independently, the external is to the right, and above my aspire. I have set this up in the monitors options. But it seems the desktop environment (although not the backgrounds) extend off to the right of my aspire (under the external) and to the left of my external- (above my aspire).
I know that it may be nit-picking, but it is a right pain when I 'loose' stuff on this phantom desktop space. For example- when i move my cursor into one of these spaces- and have to wiggle it about till it pops onto one of the screens. Also- i'd like my screensaver to pop up on both screens, and span them both- not just be repeated on both...

I`m running openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE 4.7.0 and i want to install Gnome3 as a second desktop option at login menu, for me to explore and learn. I know the Gnome 3 repo is this Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE: 3.0/openSUSE_11.4 and the app`s repo exists as well Index of /repositories/GNOME: Apps/openSUSE_11.4+GNOME_STABLE_3.0 I don`t use network manager for my internet connection because i own a router and i use ifup with dhcp4. To install it i just add the repo`s and run zypper dup ? or are there any other settings to adjust so i don`t end up with a broken system(regarding to the kdm service that starts KDE, i suspect that a gdm daemon will be created as well...) ?

I want to be able to connect remotely to my desktop like I used to from my phone, but when I connect I get a black screen the size of my full desktop(both monitors) and I can move the mouse/type.

I am once again trying to get a fully functional desktop at work without a dual boot setup. One issue is file searching. I have looked at beagle, tracker and Google Desktop. I am currently testing Google Desktop and it appears to work well, but it is not integrated into nautilus and it appears to not index my email in evolution that is accessed via an exchange server.
Beagle appears dead. Tracker looks promising, but I can't tell if it integrates into Nautilus currently without rebuilding Nautilus. If you use Tracker, can you tell me how it works with Nautilus, mapped cifs drives on windows servers and evolution in exchange mode. Also, the current version of tracker is 0.10.6, but on 10.04 only 0.6.X is available and Natty looks poised to ship with 0.8.X. Is there any advantage to compiling it? Are there Ubuntu specific tweaks that are lost if you go with source?

In this particular example I am using NoMachine's NX, although the behaviour also occurs when running VNC for instance. I'd like to connect from my laptop (1 physical screen), to my desktop at work (2 physical screen) via NX. It all works but the following problem occurs: When I connect with my laptop to my desktop I (almost) always am connected to the 2nd physical screen, whereas all windows appear on this first screen. I can interact with my desktop, use the task manager etc, see which windows are running, but any application I start, starts on the first screen (which I cannot see) and for the life of me I cannot move them from screen1 to screen2 without dragging them (which obviously is impossible since I only see screen2).The obvious workaround is: *before* you connect disable the second screen via the display manager but for me this is a non-pratical work around because it requires a lot of actions before heading home. how I can connect from a single-head desktop to a dual-head desktop without crippeling my desktop experience?

I am trying to set up dual monitors for lenny but nosuccess for the moment.
They were working fine for the same setup on ubuntu.
Using xrandr I get:
I read that virtual screen size could be the maximum part which is of no use in comparison to the current size.
So setting a virtual part in my xorg does not help much. If the above is right.
I have:

I have 2 monitors. I'm using the Nvidia driver in Twinview Mode on the right side. I can move the cursor from one monitor to the next and I can drag applications between the two. I have multiple activities. And the second monitor selected one of those other activities as the background. I'm not sure how this was chosen, or if I have a choice. Anyone know? Do activities affect what is displayed in a dual monitor setting? As I toggle through the activities, the two monitors change, but never to the same one.
When I open an application, it's a guessing game which monitor it appears on. Can I control that?
I know if one clicks the top left corner of an application they can send it "To Desktop" ("all", "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc). If I could assign "Desktop 1" to monitor 1, and "Desktop 2" to monitor 2, I could then use the "To Desktop".
At a minimum, how does one control where applications open in a dual monitor setting?

In the past (before UpStart was used in Ubuntu) I was able to configure multiple boot items in Grub menu to load the same kernel but into different runlevels. I had configured runlevel 3 (I went into /etc/rc3.d/ and removed the symlink to /etc/init.d/gdm) to be w/o GDM, so that if I had chosen it, my box would not boot into X. How can I achieve the same effect in Lucid?

I've used Ubuntu just a couple of times, and I've Never performed the Installation. I've been a Windows user mostly. But I'm ready for a change. I would like to Install Linux on my Desktop & Netbook Computer.Problem is, how to go about it.On the Desktop, I'm not the only person using it, and while I'm all & ready to try Ubuntu (Specially since XP Broke 3 days ago and the Format is impending) The rest of the people using the PC aren't. On the Netbook, right now I can't since I'm working on something, and I'm worried about compatibility issues between Platforms. So I did some research on how to get both Platforms up and running, and I found Wubi. Seemed like a perfect way to start! However, I downloaded the client, and when Downloading the rest of the Installation software, It just took way too long!On ETA it marked 4 hours at first (sure enough, it took little more than that) but then it gave me a new ETA of 8 HOURS!
Is there any other way to download it? Other than the 1.6 Mb Client file? & For the Desktop. Since I'm formating the HD anyway, What steps should I follow to install both OS on it?

I have a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 as a server (it is in standard Ubuntu not Ubuntu server edition). I have 4 1TB hard drives, three of which I want to back up to on certain days of the week. I have tried using Lucky-Backup and Rsync but neither seem to be able to handle the amount of data (there is currently about 400GB). Does anyone know of a program that can run scheduled backups of this size?

I've been planning for some time to add a Roku box so I can get Hulu plus on my TV (and possibly Netflix later on), plus I do quite a bit of iso/upgrade testing during Ubuntu development (nearly three years now), and it would be very convenient to be able to connect both of my computers at the same time So I need a router. I currently just have an AT&T DSL modem, but I have super fast DSL (about 7,000 kbps down and 1500 kbps up), and it costs me about 60% of comparable cable service Anyway just a desktop switch won't help until I get a router set up. No doubt the easiest way to go would be AT&T's own router for $100 US:
[URL]
I still have Win XP on one box (although it's nearly never used) and their "stuff" comes with an auto-setup disc that usually just works, but I've dealt with their "tech help" several times down through the years and as soon as you mention Linux they become almost mute OTOH I've been looking at less expensive alternatives:
[URL]
The Trendnet runs about $35 US and the Netgear runs about $42 US. As far as I can see both would just connect to my modem with a Cat5 ethernet cable and then to each device with additional Cat5 cables.

Like most long-time Windows users, I am a bit (very!) confused by the manual partitioning of Linux, and particularly the semi-guided partitioning of Ubuntu 10. I first tried Ubuntu way back in version 5, and it was easy to install, I could identify the correct partition by SIZE, not the enigmatic sdb1(0,1,0) nomenclature used in 10.
I set up a 32GB partition, figuring I could install Ubuntu to that, letting it manage the entire space. Instead, I can't even figure out which drive or partition is which (three hard drives, 8 partitions).
Why can't Linux (most distros--some are clear) at least give you a "sdb (0,1,0) 25.6GB" "hint" that you are installing to where you want to?
I've tried thirty versions/distros of Linux over the years (starting with Corel Linux) and for the same handful of reasons, never replaced Windows, or for that matter, even used Linux much.
1) Partitioning woes (explained above)
2) Inability to play well with Windows networks
3) ALSA? I've NEVER gotten it to work for me; it either works out of the box or I never have sound
4) Needing to download every audio and video codec and it's associated libraries to play an mp3 and watch a Divx movie
5) Completely non-intuitive naming of almost every part of Linux (why can't the names at least hint at what they are?)
Yes, I want a more Windows-like Linux. I grew up with the DOS command prompt. Been there, done that.
