I have been a Ubuntu user for quite some time, but now I'm thinking about installing a Red Hat based distro on my laptop, so that I can learn another area of Linux. Can someone suggest good distro?I'm looking for something that is stable, good repositories, up to date with latest technologies/techniques etc.

I was amazed by its speed, since everything runs in ram, its not comparable with w7. That is the key feature im looking for.
I know, that the most common recommendation here, is to "try out different *nix based OS-es and find the one that suits".
I hope i can rely on other people experience, who have comparable system and silmilar hopes.
What i expect?

-hibernation?!
-support for canon camera
-ACPI (crucial, since t41 has "fan always on" issue)
-quick boot
-constant saving (puppy saves data to memory, which is a problem is power-cut happens)
Im sure puppy can fill out most of these requirements, but still im looking word from you guys.

There are simply so many of them, but i would like to sort out one which has periodical updates and has fulfilled my requirements. Also, Gnome interface would be nice.
I state that, i wont be needing bundled software, because i can get what i want later on and i don't want excess trouble uninstalling software.
I've been using linux for a while (various distros) but somehow they dissapointed me. I know what I'm looking for, a lightweight, fast, minimalist but customizable enough, with no specific graphical environment, bleeding edge distro for a new laptop (used for studying and surfing internet), that hopefully works with my hardware.
I want to have the possibility to compile from source to make my own changes but also to install from binaries easily. I'm not a linux expert, not even an advanced user but I'm willing to learn anything to get my distro running so I'm not looking for a full out of the box distro. It would be great if this distro also had a good community.
if I were to install an RPM package, say MySQL, in Fedora 12 x86_64, which one should I download? MySQL provides builds for RHEL5, etc. So is there a 1-to-1 correspondence between RHEL and Fedora?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to set up a very simple version control system in my own computer, which only I will use. I want to use it mainly for latex files, not programming. I basically want to use it as a smart backup system and to keep track of past versions, but I don't need merging, patching, etc... My typical needs are the following:Work on a file many times and committ the changes every couple of days.Every now and then, try something new, and do it on a new branch. If it doesn't work, go back to the original one.
Take a look at a previous version (often a binary file, say a pdf or dvi file).I have used git so far, for no special reason, but I haven't been able to get comfortable with it, specially since it only handles text files efficiently (I think). My main issue is with point 3 above, I haven't found a way (maybe there's just no way) of pointing to a previous version of a file and opening it in an external program. Would CVS or SVN or any other version control system allow me to do this easily?
Fedora 12. Since I don't have a direct connection, I'm wondering how wifi would be or is enabled when roaming. Is there an application that would allow adjusting/ choosing the network which would be compatible with sugar's environment?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
im still relatively new to linux and fedora, and i was wondering if it would be possible to install another distro on an external hard disk and keep fedora's grub. i tried this once before but the following things happened: (fedora is on my internal hard disk) the installation to the external hard drive went well, and i set the boot partition to C: because thats the first partition however when i unplugged my external hard drive, and proceeded to boot into fedora, nothing happened. my bios screen flashed and then a blank screen with a cursor. is there anyway to keep Fedora's grub where it is and just install another linux distro without that said distro's grub and add that distro to the grub list in fedora manually? or even boot to my external from the bios itself (because mine can do that)

1. I'd like to choose a small distribution, but one that is easy for me to deploy and manage (I'm new to Linux, but I am an IT professional). What shall I use?
2. I'd like to understand the implications of using Compact Flash. Will the OS need to write to disk? Can I configure my installation so that the CF card is read-only and provide a small writeable partition on my hard drive for any required IO? Should I not bother, and put it all on HD? (My motivation for using CF was to limit power-consumption/noise/heat).

I had configured runlevel 3 (I went into /etc/rc3.d/ and removed the symlink to /etc/init.d/gdm) to be w/o GDM, so that if I had chosen it, my box would not boot into X. How can I achieve the same effect in Lucid?

I would like to Install Linux on my Desktop & Netbook Computer.Problem is, how to go about it.On the Desktop, I'm not the only person using it, and while I'm all & ready to try Ubuntu (Specially since XP Broke 3 days ago and the Format is impending) The rest of the people using the PC aren't. On the Netbook, right now I can't since I'm working on something, and I'm worried about compatibility issues between Platforms.So I did some research on how to get both Platforms up and running, and I found Wubi. Seemed like a perfect way to start!However, I downloaded the client, and when Downloading the rest of the Installation software, It just took way too long!On ETA it marked 4 hours at first (sure enough, it took little more than that) but then it gave me a new ETA of 8 HOURS!
Is there any other way to download it? Other than the 1.6 Mb Client file? & For the Desktop. Since I'm formating the HD anyway, What steps should I follow to install both OS on it?

So I'm choosing between noname (Logilink ?) card with Sil3124 chip and HighPoint 1720 card. Functionality basically is the same for both cards or at least it is enough for my needs. I will run mdadm anyway. So the question is should I really pay 3 times more for HighPoint ? Is there any reason for that or Sil3124 will do the same ? What about compatibility ? As I know both cards are supported on thet kernel.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have accidentally removed my /boot partition(when installing grub using LiveCD i'm typing "rm -rf /boot" instead of "rm -rf boot") After that i have installed grub, have to reinstalled latest kernel(2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686) using rpm(and 2nd time using yum) but result the same: i can't boot into my system. Unfortunately, i can't copy&paste log, but booting stopped after something like a:
mounting /proc
mounting /sysfs
Creating /dev
then kernel finds keyboard and mouse and... and nothing. Is it possible to restore my system without reinstalling distro?

I have a computer with 2 HD. In one of them there are installed XP and F14. In the other there are several XP files and Mandriva (the last installed distro). At booting, the grub window I see is the Mandriva's one, where I can select F14 or XP. I should like to see at booting the Fedora's grub.conf window with selecting options for XP or Mandriva. How can I change this?
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy SL6.1 Distribution isn't connecting the the source packages from yum. It says something along the lines of the repo???.xml cannot be found for altrpms & sourceforge packages.
I have already tried using the command:
su yum clean all su yum update package-list
but that failed to work.
and su yum makecache
Is there any other way i can try? Like uninstalling the source from yum then reinstalling it?
