Ubuntu :: Checking Driver Loaded For A Hardware?

I would like to ask some questions about checking which driver loaded for a hardware. Information: I am using Ubuntu and Xubuntu version 9.10.
1. For all types of hardware (including but not limited to network adapter, video card, sound card, USB devices, etc), if the command 'lshw' configuration does not show the loaded driver for a hardware, but the hardware work perfectly, is there any other way to know which driver loaded for that hardware WITHOUT ANY RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, (and for network device, without using "connection information" feature in NetworkManager) ? If yes, how to do it?
2. Does your answer in question 1 will work for external hardware (hardware based on USB, FireWire, etc) and also the other non-pci based hardware? If it will not work, any other ways?
3. For your answer in question 1 above, do I need to install any packages that was not installed by default during Ubuntu installation?
4. For network hardware, "connection information" feature in NetworkManager does show the driver information. But, like stated in question 1, "lshw" command does not show the information about the driver used, then how NetworkManager get information about the driver used for a network hardware?

i found this quote: WPA/WPA2 are broken in every module everybody has tried (AFAIK) since Adam's 1.7.1.1 DKMS driver. Downgrade like so: 1) Get the driver from [URL]... 2) Go to terminal, and move the pre-installed driver so it won't get loaded. cd /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/ sudo mv rt2860sta.ko rt2860sta.bak. 3) Install rt2860-dkms_1.7.1.1_all.deb. It will also install dependencies needed to compile the driver. If it doesn't retrieve the right packages, make sure "build-essential", "linux-header-generic" and "dkms" is installed. Let it run and it should complete without a problem. 4) Restart. The new driver should work automatically. the deb file gives me an error.

I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.04 running on a PCM-9343 board from Advantech. To do so I followed the instructions in this file from DM&P [URL] I installed a text-only Ubuntu using the alternate installer on a CF card that was connected to my PC. After reboot I downloaded the given kernel and updated the installation on the card, as said in the instructions. Inserting the card into the PCM-9343 gives a working Ubuntu Installation. So far so good.
The only thing not working is networking. The ethernet adapter is not loaded on boot, neither can I up it after logging in using "ifup -a". I found out, that the driver was not loaded during booting, i.e. the module r6040 didn't show up on "lsmod". The module is included in the modified kernel, that I downloaded from the producer's page. So I added it to /etc/modules and rebooted. Now it's loaded, but still no eth0. Ifup -a gives the following messages:

I tried all the threads to load and compile the driver for the Belkin wireless-N F5D8053 (Ralink RT2870 chip) I still cannot get it to come up - the wireless status says device not ready. Here is some of the system info relating to the adapter:

How do you find out which driver is being used for a certain device. Say that I run lsusb and I find "Bus 007 Device 002: ID 046d:c043 Logitech, Inc. MX320/MX400 Laser Mouse", how can I find out what the active driver for the device is?Also, is there some way to list all available drivers for a device? Is there a way to change the driver at runtime?

I used to have FC11 installed with the nvidia supplied binary driver. Worked fine, very stable. Trying FC12 and FC13 live CDs caused a hang, so I stuck with FC11. FC14 live CD did boot so I backed up my own files and did a clean FC14 install. Upgraded to get kernel 2.6.35.6-48, installed the nvidia driver from RPMFusion (260.19.21) and had a working system! Now, after a cold boot, the kernel always hangs during boot. Tried a number of kernel boot option (apci=off, noapic and a few others too). The hang is not always at the same place. The earliest it has hung is after:Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint
Sometimes its a few lines later at:NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 260.19.12 ...(which would seem to imply that the hang can even occur a step or two before the actual driver is loaded!)
Sometimes it keeps going for a few more seconds and randomly hangs during some other driver load.
Without a specific nvidia driver the system always boots ok, so I'm pretty sure its the nvidia driver but I just can't seem to get a handle on this in a reproducible way. Sometimes, when I have make some other change, it will boot and work ok, but a reboot locks it up again (for example, in case it was SELinux, I disabled it and on the next reboot it booted and worked ok. Then, next boot, it wasn't working again). When I make changes, I reboot using the previous kernel, make the changes and reboot, with an occasional success. Once I start rebooting using the latest kernel, it always hangs.
I'd love to get a solution to this, but even some advice on debugging this would be appreciated!
I'm using 8600GT, 256Mb, PCIe card in a MA69VM motherboard with 3Gb of RAM.

I just installed ubuntu on my m11x and am completely new to ubuntu. After installing the latest driver for the 335m I am stuck at checking battery state and there is no way I can get to the gui anymore. The only access I have to are the tty's and I don't know what to do. I have already tried finding a solution for a couple of hours, but cannot find any. Please help me solve this problem, I do not want to reinstall again.

I have a Macbook Pro which i want to install Opensuse 11.2 64bit(Upgrades to 11.3) The problem is that once i install opensuse and then boot via rEFIt, it loads up till the desktop is supposed to appear. All i get at this stage is darkness with a few coloured shapes in the background (Video driver not loaded).I can however reboot and go in via the failsafe option. Once in here i can use the GUI. I am a total noob with linux, can some one give me the instructions on how to install this driver. Its driving me insane. Sometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?

At times I notice that my CPU is working hard and I open terminal and enter #top which shows me that gzip is running and using 90% or more or the CPU this remains the same after I close all applications and the only thing left open is terminal. The only way I have found so far is to reboot the system.

I am unable to use k3d or blender due to a weird graphics related problem. It says glx is not loaded. I tried to put Load "glx" line in my xorg.conf but no success

I've been looking forward to making the switch to Ubuntu for a while, but ever since I did, the road's been pockmarked with errors and hassles. That's, primarily, because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Let me explain how I installed Ubuntu: All I did to install Ubuntu was download the file from the website and run the program. I didn't burn anything onto a CD or USB; I just clicked on the .exe file and let it run from there. Everything worked great - all I had to do was boot my laptop and choose from either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Now, I had no idea how to watch videos, so I started to install a lot of stuff from the Synaptic Download Manager. Now, I don't know all of what I downloaded, but it was mainly games. The next thing I know, I get this page when I choose Ubuntu:

I'm trying to prevent a few modules from loading at boot, like i.e. bluetooth, sco, bnep, btusb, usb_storage and uvcvideo, so I blacklisted them in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but they still get loaded. I've checked that I unload all of the ones depending on eachother so that shouldn't be the problem, I think. Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do to really prevent them from loading?

I have both the openjdk-6-jre and sun-java6-jre versions of java installed on my Ubuntu Maverick desktop, with the sun version setup as the default. I was trying to load the web page,URL..., an amateur radio software defined receiver. I can load the page on Firefox run on XP in a VirtualBox machine, but when loaded on Firefox on my Maverick desktop, I wasn't getting any sound with openjdk, so I installed sun's and set it as the default. When I run 'java -version' from the command line, it reports the following:Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_22-b04)Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 17.1-b03, mixed mode)but on firefox, when loading the above page, it reports 'java version test applet 1.6.0_20' on the page. When i run my iptables script using fw builder (=installed on my router/server) everything works fine...until i reboot (nomather "test run" is active or not) to counter this problem i'm using the 'iptables-restore' in the "interfaces" file. upon reboot a "iptables -L" confirms me the correct rules are loaded.
However... tests (eg ping test from an ethx interface) to the outside indicate the script does not seem to be working. upon installing the script with fwbuilder this works again fine....i see no difference in the route table nor do i seen anything suspicious in the syslog. restarting the "network" does not solve anything either
I have seen posts about an you need to activate it by using "/etc/init.d/iptables save active" but theres no iptables in that location. only /sbin contains that program.

My rewrite_module is not loaded checked with a script and double checked with sudo apache2ctl -l. Output:

The rewrite_module doesn't work because I always get: HTTP Error 500 (just 'static' pages work perfect. I tried everything but I'm not a apache2 config specialist so I should ask some help after searching myself for 10 hours now If you need more information I will try to serve it!

when you first start up your computer it is in command line, before the gui has loaded. Just like when you type ctrl alt f1 it goes to a similar screen. in both those cases my fonts are twice the size they normally are. I've used ubuntu and slackware, installed them both on different occasions, and the font in the terminal was always small and looked like what i came to see as normal. but now they are stretched out and twice the size. i am wondering if there is a command or way to change either the font or the resolution or the display settings of the terminal.
