View 6 Replies View RelatedI would like to ask some questions about checking which driver loaded for a hardware. Information: I am using Ubuntu and Xubuntu version 9.10.
1. For all types of hardware (including but not limited to network adapter, video card, sound card, USB devices, etc), if the command 'lshw' configuration does not show the loaded driver for a hardware, but the hardware work perfectly, is there any other way to know which driver loaded for that hardware WITHOUT ANY RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, (and for network device, without using "connection information" feature in NetworkManager) ? If yes, how to do it?
2. Does your answer in question 1 will work for external hardware (hardware based on USB, FireWire, etc) and also the other non-pci based hardware? If it will not work, any other ways?
3. For your answer in question 1 above, do I need to install any packages that was not installed by default during Ubuntu installation?
4. For network hardware, "connection information" feature in NetworkManager does show the driver information. But, like stated in question 1, "lshw" command does not show the information about the driver used, then how NetworkManager get information about the driver used for a network hardware?
I've been looking forward to making the switch to Ubuntu for a while, but ever since I did, the road's been pockmarked with errors and hassles. That's, primarily, because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Let me explain how I installed Ubuntu: All I did to install Ubuntu was download the file from the website and run the program. I didn't burn anything onto a CD or USB; I just clicked on the .exe file and let it run from there. Everything worked great - all I had to do was boot my laptop and choose from either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Now, I had no idea how to watch videos, so I started to install a lot of stuff from the Synaptic Download Manager. Now, I don't know all of what I downloaded, but it was mainly games. The next thing I know, I get this page when I choose Ubuntu:
Code:
GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4
[minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completion. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device/file completions.]
sh:grub> _
So I hit TAB and try the easiest command on the list, BOOT. This is what I get when I try boot:
Code:
error: no loaded kernel
So I don't know what I did wrong.
I'm trying to prevent a few modules from loading at boot, like i.e. bluetooth, sco, bnep, btusb, usb_storage and uvcvideo, so I blacklisted them in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but they still get loaded. I've checked that I unload all of the ones depending on eachother so that shouldn't be the problem, I think. Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do to really prevent them from loading?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen i run my iptables script using fw builder (=installed on my router/server) everything works fine...until i reboot (nomather "test run" is active or not) to counter this problem i'm using the 'iptables-restore' in the "interfaces" file. upon reboot a "iptables -L" confirms me the correct rules are loaded.
However... tests (eg ping test from an ethx interface) to the outside indicate the script does not seem to be working. upon installing the script with fwbuilder this works again fine....i see no difference in the route table nor do i seen anything suspicious in the syslog. restarting the "network" does not solve anything either
I have seen posts about an you need to activate it by using "/etc/init.d/iptables save active" but theres no iptables in that location. only /sbin contains that program.

Monitoring programs won't work until the needed modules are loaded. You may want to run '/etc/init.d/module-init-tools start' to load them.
Possibly necessary info:

Intel T4300 dual core

My rewrite_module is not loaded checked with a script and double checked with sudo apache2ctl -l. Output:

One of the Virtual hosts in httpd.conf (probably it's not best practice for Apache2?) is:

The rewrite_module doesn't work because I always get: HTTP Error 500 (just 'static' pages work perfect. I tried everything but I'm not a apache2 config specialist so I should ask some help after searching myself for 10 hours now If you need more information I will try to serve it!
when you first start up your computer it is in command line, before the gui has loaded. Just like when you type ctrl alt f1 it goes to a similar screen. in both those cases my fonts are twice the size they normally are. I've used ubuntu and slackware, installed them both on different occasions, and the font in the terminal was always small and looked like what i came to see as normal. but now they are stretched out and twice the size. i am wondering if there is a command or way to change either the font or the resolution or the display settings of the terminal.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having one hell of a time getting my old computer back up and running for my son. A year ago I had this computer running with Ubuntu despite it's connection to our local wireless with a Belkin N1 F5D8001. Now I've got the newest version of Ubuntu installed on his computer and I'm trying to go through the same steps that I went through in the past. I've managed to get the NetMW14x.inf file downloaded and I've used the new GUI for windows drivers to install the .inf but it's showing no Hardware loaded.
Also, in the past, there was at least recognition of the existence of the card if I did an ifconfig, it was just a matter of assigning a driver to it, etc. Now, if I do an ifconfig, I get the ethernet (disconnected) and lo (loopback). So it's as if the card's dead, but it isn't because I just wiped XP off it this morning. What the heck is going on with this thing? I could swear I've done everything I've read and everything I recalled doing in the past to make this work, but I'm mostly hosed by the fact that it's as if the system doesn't give a crap that the card is inserted at all.

i found this quote: WPA/WPA2 are broken in every module everybody has tried (AFAIK) since Adam's 1.7.1.1 DKMS driver. Downgrade like so: 1) Get the driver from [URL]... 2) Go to terminal, and move the pre-installed driver so it won't get loaded. cd /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/ sudo mv rt2860sta.ko rt2860sta.bak. 3) Install rt2860-dkms_1.7.1.1_all.deb. It will also install dependencies needed to compile the driver. If it doesn't retrieve the right packages, make sure "build-essential", "linux-header-generic" and "dkms" is installed. Let it run and it should complete without a problem. 4) Restart. The new driver should work automatically. the deb file gives me an error.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to create a test setup in my lab that will run power supplies for an indefinite amount of time. It could be anywhere from days to months at a time. This rules out matlab, as its memory leaks won't let it run that long, and LabView is too buggy (at least in my experience. and it has memory leaks as well). So I need a way to program GPIB (since that is the interface these power supplies have). So far, PyVISA seems to be the most likely way to be able to do this.
However, I keep receiving the following error:
Code:
pyvisa.visa_exceptions.VisaIOError: VI_ERROR_LIBRARY_NFOUND: A code library required by VISA could not be located or loaded.
Searching around, this apparently means that I'm missing GPIB drivers, but I'm not.
linux-gpib installed, and the card appears in /dev.
That being said, every now and then the gpib interfaces simply disappear from /dev,and the only way I can get them back is to reinstall linux-gpib. Also, has anybody else succeeded in working with GPIB outside of LabView and Matlab, and if so how? I'm also open to other options, having made no progress on this after over a week. The two real requirements is that I need programming interface to be scpi commands, and I would prefer to code in python or C/C++.
I was using v 8.10. It came to its end of life and I felt compelled to upgrade. I upgraded to v 9.04. All seemed well, but then I discovered that I had no sound. As a test, I booted up with the v 9.04 CD, using it as a live CD. I had sound, so it seems as though it should be possible for me to have sound from my upgraded v 9.04 too, provided I can make the necessary changes to it.
When using the live CD and opening the volume control, I get as the listed device "HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer)". That doesn't appear when I open the volume control using my upgraded v 9.04. Instead, it says "Playback: Null Output (PulseAudio mixer)". Also, when I check for loaded modules when using the live CD, I get many with snd in their name, but nary a one when using the upgraded 9.04.
Is there some simple way for me to load the same modules in the upgraded 9.04 as are loaded by the live CD? I tried to figure out the answer to this by reading other threads, but was simply overwhelmed by the volume of material and often wasn't sure to which version of Ubuntu it applied.
