Ubuntu :: Can't Input Things In Katakana - Anthy
Jan 13, 2010
I got the conversion to work for hiragana to kanji by downloading the language support, but now I can't input things in katakana there is no option for it on Anthy. I looked all over. There's no drop down menu for me to change it. One more thing, how do I change the default font to a different one for Japanese scripts?

For years I have been using scim-anthy for Japanese input under Linux. However just moving to ubuntu 10.10 I noticed that the development for scim has ceased and lots of people recommend moving to ibus. So I tried: I got ibus and ibus-anthy installed. I choose ibus as keyboard method input system under System->Adminsitration->Language Support ibus is up and running. I can see the icon. In ibus opreferences I added anthy under Input methods. I restarted X resp. the whole computer. I can choose Japanese-Anthy when clicking on the ibus icon. But nothing happens. I am still writing latin characters, no anthy popped up (like it used with scim), nothing.

I can't seem to get Japanese input working with scim-anthy. I have scim 1.4.9 installed and the daemon running. I have the scim-anthy 1.3.1 package installed as well. I can open and modify the scim-settings, but I can't get the anthy dialog to appear. Apparently, ctrl-space should bring up the dialog, but nothing happens. I tried following the instructions on this page under "Open a program with japanese input enabled - via command line", but still no dialog. After starting the daemon, I tried:
Code: XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM' LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 gvim And no luck. Note that I don't really understand what that command is supposed to do. Should it be something different?

Before I upgraded to Karmic, I had Japanese text input set up on my system, but since the upgrade it no longer works. I can still read Japanese text, and when I press Ctrl+SPACE I still get the ANTHY box in the bottom right-hand corner, but Japanese is no longer on the list of supported languages. how to get Japanese back?

I'm working through some problems in a beginners programming book. The author mentions a formula for calculating the number of ways of picking out n things from a collection of m of them:
Code:
/ m m!
| | = -----------
n / n! (m-n)!
But he does not give a name for the formula. Does anyone happen to know what it is called? I need to do some related research.

I don't know if this is an Ubuntu issue or what, but I've seen other Anthy threads on this forum so I figured I'd just post my issue here and see if anyone has the same problem. When using Japanese Anthy in Ubuntu 9.10 I sometimes get incorrect kanji. For example the first kanji (choku) in 直接 will only come up as the Chinese version of the kanji. On websites this kanji is displayed correctly but I just can't type it correctly. Very frustrating.

Using Anthy with IBus I'm having troubles typing the correct characters. I have stickers set on my keys that correspond with the correct keys for Windows/Google IME. Unfortunately Anthy and IBus have my keys mapped differently than this for some reason. If I have "Use System Keyboard Layout" checked in IBus settings the character ろ isn't mapped at all and if I uncheck it, a very large number of characters are mapped to completely different keys. When I look at the keyboard layout for Japanese Kana I've also noticed that ろ is unmapped. If it's not clear, I typically type using 1 keystroke being equal to a single character rather than typing in Romaji.

After much finagling, I've finally got Anthy setup and working. (This after four versions of Ubuntu )
But I have a slight problem. The cadidate popups are TINY on my 1080p 15" screen. I have to get right up to the screen to see the characters.
Is there any way of changing the size of these popups?

I have the following problem: I want to install anthy (an input method for Japanese text) on my laptop, running with eeebuntu 4 (with upgrades). When I tried to do this with synaptic, I recieved the error message "Depends: libanthy0 but it is not going to be installed". So I installed libanthy0 manually (along with anthy-common, on which libanthy0 depends); but when I tried again to install anthy afterwards, I recieved the message "to be removed: anthy-common, libanthy0" and then "Depends: libanthy0 but it is not going to be installed" again.
When I try to install anthy using apt-get, I get the following output:
sudo apt-get install -f anthy
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
anthy: Depends: libanthy0 (= 9100h-3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
From > sudo apt-get install libanthy0 I get
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libanthy0 is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 191 not upgraded.
Removing libanthy0 and reinstalling it via apt-get hasn't changed anything. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? (I have tried to find it on this page and with google, and although I have found several similar posts, the solutions seemed rather specific to me and didn't help. Still, I'm sorry if I'm asking something that has already been answered somewhere.

I have successfully installed Japanese language packages and Anthy as well as Skype. These were simple. There is a problem though and that is when I use the keyboard shortcut to activate the switch between language fonts in Skype there is no effect. What do I have to do to get the fonts to work within Skype? It works just fine with firefox, gedit and other programs; just Skype. Could this perhaps be a bug within Skype that I have no control over?

I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?

I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

I would like to use Japanese kana (hiragana, katakana, kanji) on Ubuntu but everything that I've tried to get it set up and running isn't working. The Spanish that I have set up is working perfectly so far.
I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.

I updated through the update manager the other day and after I shut my computer down and turned it back on the next day, all my icons on my desktop disappeared and I can't access my files or my applications. It gives me this error when trying to access my files in my desktop.
Could not open location 'file:///home/anubis/Desktop'
No application is registered as handling this file.
I posted a new thread about this the other day and somehow the thread disappeared too. what do I need to do?

Also, what do I use in ubuntu to check for updates to all of my installed applications?

So I've just recently started using awesome, but I was wondering why things look like this and how I can fix it
Just wondering why it's so 'un-decorated' I guess, I assume I'm just not running something I should be at startup, it happens on all programs and windows. http://i51.tinypic.com/afac5c.png
It's looks like windows 98
Here's another screenshot of it http://i54.tinypic.com/349ary9.png
Just all the borders, menus and stuff look horrible.

When I (try) to upload files to Ubuntu One; generally, the upload doesn't happen. What does happen is [on] the bottom panel says: "Sending request to files.one.ubuntu.com . . ." It may sit there like that for hours without an upload happening. Once, I left my computer on and left for a couple of days; when I got back it had uploaded. Is this the norm? Is there something wrong on my end (other than PBKAC)? What can I do to speed things up? Or can they be speeded up? Is the description of Ubuntu One one thing and the reality something else?
What to do?

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I wanted to customise it a little (splash screen, login screen, window theme) - problem is, all of the tuts on the net have been written for 9.xx or lower and none of them seem to work with the version that I am running (I can't remember why right now because I looked this up a few days ago but there was a tab missing in 10.04 that was there in 9.xx and below). how to customise these things running Ubuntu 10.04?

this is totally weird and i have no idea what's happening. i have a 64bit ubuntu 10.10 (just like the title says). i've been having random (really out of the blue) slow ubuntu response. so slow, the mouse pointer works stops works kinda thing. i can't open any program and clicking the power button doesn't work. i have to hard restart it (holding down the power for a couple of sec). this is really making me mad since i'm afraid for my hardware life and to be honest - not very impressed with ubuntu.
i have no idea why this happens and i really need help on this subject, otherwise i'd just have to look for another OS (and i would like not to) also - the computer is new so i don't think it's a hardware problem, but if there are tests i can do to check it i wouldn't mind

I've been running Linux for about 3 years now. I still am having difficulties understanding some of the basic unix and linux software and their dependencies.
What I am wanting to do, simply for my own amusement, is to strip the OS down so that I am only running software that I need. Then I want to build it back up with X and some sort of desktop.
Right now I have a stock Ubuntu 10.04 installation from the alternative DVD. Right now I sit at 643MB and 14MB of ram. Of course I would want it to be lower.
Here are the programs currently on the chopping block. I need to now if I honestly need them or not. I state next to the software whether or not I know what it is. code...
So obviously I have not a clue about many things still, and if you've caught an error in my descriptions then I have less of a clue than I thought.
I just need to know what the system needs to run. I like the basic commands like less, grep, free, df, du, adduser, usermod, apt-get, dpkg, cp, mv, rm, mkdir, ect. What I don't need are things like w3m telnet(Unless someone knows something I don't), memtest+, and I don't ever use cron, but I also don't know if it does something behind the scenes that is vitally important. I remember trying to get rid of memtest one time and it wouldn't boot after that. Any idea why?

The book I have was published in 2006 and I am using Ubuntu 10.10.
