Feb 11, 2010I've been using Kubuntu for about 6 months now and decided to try something new. So i switched to arch linux, and after much deliberation, I got KDE functional on it. There's just one problem. The icons aren't displaying properly. Here's a picture:

How do I change the turquoise-ish plasma-desktop and title bar things. Also whenever i open something, it asks me basically where i want to position it. How do i stop it from asking me that as well?
Also, how do I login as something other than root? I did adduser, but no login screen shows up for me.

Ubuntu :: Moving Windows From One Desktop To Another?
May 13, 2010i installed ubuntu 10.4 on my samsung n110 netbook, the regular one, not the netbookremix
so far it looks good, some little inconveniences though, my main one right now is: i used to be able to grab a window with the mouse on one desktop and move it to another desktop just by dragging it (i.e. drag it to the right side of the screen and then it would switch desktops automatically)
now that doesnt seem to work anymore, i can only move the window but then i have to switch desktops manually and move the window some more
this really sucks, i know for now i can use ctrl+alt+shift+left/rightarrow but im used to doing it with the mouse and i quite like it
so my question is, is this a common issue? is it specific to my environment, if that's the case i'd be happy to give you more info on it...

Nov 16, 2010when i move a window around on my desktop its splited up into two where the bottom half sluggishly follows the top half i.e. the top half of the window is leading as i move the window around the desktop rather than moving around smoothly(i.e. moving the say vlc around without the window splitting[moving it around as one]. this issue also persist in fire fox where when i scroll down a web page, the page is split in two where one half of the webpage overlaps the other dependant whether i scroll up or down.
my computers configuration is:
64bt UBUntu 10.04
MSI 870A FUZION......
AMD phenom II x6

Ubuntu :: Moving Special Folders Desktop - Downloads And Pictures
Jan 31, 2011I would like to permanently move the special folders "Desktop", "Pictures" and "Downloads" into the "Documents" folder. Currently they are stored in their default location in my home directory. Can I just drag them there and my system will still work like normal, or do I have to do this with gconf or something like that? I'm running Ubuntu with stock Gnome desktop.

I've been looking for a similar way to accomplish this in (KDE) Kubuntu. I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.

May 21, 2011An ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.
I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:
1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?
2- What's causing this?
Fedora :: FC14/gnome Panel Keeps Moving To Top Of Desktop
May 23, 2011On FC14/gnome I created a panel on the bottom of the desktop. After reboot the panel shows up on the top of the desktop. The panel cannot be moved to the bottom. Can go into panel "properties" and under "Orientation" selecting "Bottom" but after a second the botton switches back to "Top" without moving the panel.
The workaround was to create a new panel on the bottom, set it up, then delete the old panel from the top. When the machine is rebooted the panel goes back to the top. Seems like a basic gnome panel bug.
Hardware :: Moving A Harddrive (with Mandriva) From Laptop To Desktop?

But today (just for fun), I removed the laptop harddrive and connect to my desktop via sata1 (so it will boot up the same "sda1").
It boots up.. i even see the STARTING UDEV..
but it bring me to ..

I typed "startx" and it booted up to Mandriva desktop.. but keyboard and mouse doesn't work ! Maybe because it was looking for the laptop touchpad / keyboard.
Is there a way , while its BOOTING UP, to interrupt the bootup process and make it detect new hardware ?
Ubuntu :: Moving Buttons To Left - Keep Moving Back
Mar 27, 2011I like the buttons on the left. I'm running 10.04 & I know how to move them. The problem is that changing themes will move them back right. OK, if the new theme has them on the right that's OK. But going back to the other theme doesn't change them back. They don't seem to be controlled by the theme, or I'm just not doing it right.

Looks like a bug in gnome-vfs' support (or lack of it) for ext4, or have I got some other more subtle corruption going on? It's of little importance to me as I'm rarely in the GUI, but it would be nice to see confirmation or otherwise.

Mar 4, 2010I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

Jun 14, 2010I updated through the update manager the other day and after I shut my computer down and turned it back on the next day, all my icons on my desktop disappeared and I can't access my files or my applications. It gives me this error when trying to access my files in my desktop.

May 10, 2010When I (try) to upload files to Ubuntu One; generally, the upload doesn't happen. What does happen is [on] the bottom panel says: "Sending request to files.one.ubuntu.com . . ." It may sit there like that for hours without an upload happening. Once, I left my computer on and left for a couple of days; when I got back it had uploaded. Is this the norm? Is there something wrong on my end (other than PBKAC)? What can I do to speed things up? Or can they be speeded up? Is the description of Ubuntu One one thing and the reality something else?

Feb 27, 2011this is totally weird and i have no idea what's happening. i have a 64bit ubuntu 10.10 (just like the title says). i've been having random (really out of the blue) slow ubuntu response. so slow, the mouse pointer works stops works kinda thing. i can't open any program and clicking the power button doesn't work. i have to hard restart it (holding down the power for a couple of sec). this is really making me mad since i'm afraid for my hardware life and to be honest - not very impressed with ubuntu.
i have no idea why this happens and i really need help on this subject, otherwise i'd just have to look for another OS (and i would like not to) also - the computer is new so i don't think it's a hardware problem, but if there are tests i can do to check it i wouldn't mind
Ubuntu :: Need To Remove Some Things From System
Mar 31, 2011I've been running Linux for about 3 years now. I still am having difficulties understanding some of the basic unix and linux software and their dependencies.
What I am wanting to do, simply for my own amusement, is to strip the OS down so that I am only running software that I need. Then I want to build it back up with X and some sort of desktop.
Right now I have a stock Ubuntu 10.04 installation from the alternative DVD. Right now I sit at 643MB and 14MB of ram. Of course I would want it to be lower.
Here are the programs currently on the chopping block. I need to now if I honestly need them or not. I state next to the software whether or not I know what it is. code...
So obviously I have not a clue about many things still, and if you've caught an error in my descriptions then I have less of a clue than I thought.
I just need to know what the system needs to run. I like the basic commands like less, grep, free, df, du, adduser, usermod, apt-get, dpkg, cp, mv, rm, mkdir, ect. What I don't need are things like w3m telnet(Unless someone knows something I don't), memtest+, and I don't ever use cron, but I also don't know if it does something behind the scenes that is vitally important. I remember trying to get rid of memtest one time and it wouldn't boot after that. Any idea why?

Apr 28, 2011For some odd reason when I logged into Ubuntu Lucid Lynx today, Caro dock is all messed up and the close, minimize, etc buttons are on the left on all of the windows.Yesterday all was fine. The buttons were on the right side and cairo dock was fine.Now, it is all messed up. I even brought the compiz icon up and clicked reload WM and that did not even fix it.
