Ubuntu :: Can't Get Server To Work Again?

Jun 6, 2010

On my previous install of Ubuntu Lucid (desktop), installing a server was as easy as 'sudo apt-get install apache 2' and then putting my files in my /var/www directory. Doing this, I could access the server from any computer by going to my IP address. Since the last time I formatted my entire computer, I can't see to get such a server up anymore. I can only access it on my computer using my local IP.

I have ubuntu installed, but I also installed kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop in that order. All of which I can choose at login.

Ubuntu :: Getting CGI To Work In Apache2 Server

May 12, 2010

I'm running 10.04 with Apache2/PHP5.x I wanted to test some basic cgi scripts, but my browser is displaying the code (#!...) If I run the scripts on the console, they work fine so CGI is not the problem, it's apache. To install the CGI module I ran sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-perl2 with no problems. By the way, I installed Apache through apt-get instead of doing it manually, but it seems that the installation divides the conf file in different parts, so the regular apache2.conf has this:

Code:
# Include module configuration:
Include /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/*.load
Include /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/*.conf
# Include all the user configurations:
Include /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
# Include ports listing
Include /etc/apache2/ports.conf
[Code]....

I can't figure out what I need to do to get CGI working on my server.

General :: Getting VMware Server To Work On Ubuntu 9.10

Jan 18, 2010

I'm trying to get VMware Server 2.0.2 (64-bit version) to work on my Ubuntu workstation. However, the install script ($ sudo ./vmware-install.pl) runs into problems with the kernel modules:

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/build/include]
Extracting the sources of the vmmon module.
Building the vmmon module.
Using 2.6.x kernel build system.
make: Entering directory `/tmp/vmware-config4/vmmon-only' .....
Unable to build the vmmon module.
Execution aborted.

Am I missing some required packages? This is 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). uname -a returns Linux hostname 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux. Got VMware Server 2.0.2 working. However, if you have some tips on getting VMware Server 1.0.x to work with latest Ubuntu easily (without having to compile the whole kernel, for instance), please share those too! My first impression is that I don't like 2.0 at all, and would much rather use 1.0.x if only I got it working.

I know this version is probably not supported anymore but I can't just format a customer server because it's OS is outdated...I just can't put my sources.list on it because I am on ubuntu 10.10 and it would download updates for the wrong OS probably causing a huge damage on the old one.

Ubuntu Networking :: Server Blocking SSH From Work Network

Feb 2, 2010

I have an ubuntu 8.04 dedicated server running openssh which I am having problems with.

The server is based in England yet I am currently working from Thailand. Slow speeds and timeouts I am used to but it is now over 24hr since I have managed to SSH the server (from here).

I just tried remote desktop on my PC back in the UK and this connected straight away through both SSH and SCP.

Thinking that it may be the IP being blocked from my works network I switched off wifi on my phone and tried to connect over the data network a few times with no luck.

Another strange problem is that when we got the server it was locked into a chroot jail which SSH(22) always leads into. After accessing SSH on port 22 I have to run a break script to gain root access. The sshd_config file says that the server is listening on port 57 yet I have never been able to access this.

Code:
> netstat -a | grep ssh
tcp6 0 0 [::]:ssh [::]:* LISTEN
> iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Work Loopback Server

Mar 24, 2010

I'm setting up a loopback server for work related testing. I have a small program that needs to be executed through telnet from about 200 IP's on the same network. On the server, I have to set a static ip, enable telnet login, and place my 2 program files in the appropriate folders so it will run. I have been on this for 2-3 days and haven't got far.

My /etc/Network/interfaces file is this...
Auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

The rest of terminal is filled up with these, and it states that the file only has 32 characters. I don't know if this is a privilege issue or not. I've read several threads on telnet, and lots of arguments about ssh, but I can't run ssh, so I need to enable telnet. There is not a security issue. I run a private network where the only valuable resource would probably be the text file with my IP address on it. Its also accessed by people that have very limited networking knowledge and no linux knowledge...

So,
Set static IP
Setup telnet server...
Any takers?

Ubuntu :: Can't Get ESATA To Work With 10.04.01 LTS Server, DP55KG Motherboard

Dec 17, 2010

I have run into a problem with eSATA that so far I have been unable to find a solution to it on any of the Ubuntu or Intel forums. My set up is as below:

OS: Ubuntu 10.04.01 LTS Server (base install)
Motherboard: DP55KG
BIOS: ver. KGIBX10J.86A..5893.2010.1116.0001
Marvell Controller: 88SE6145, BIOS 1.2.0.31

My understanding is that Ubuntu is suppose to detect the eSATA drive without any extra drivers, my experience is it does not - I am missing something or is anyone else having/had this problem and been able to get eSATA to work?

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To 10.04 Keyboard Doesn't Work In X Server

May 29, 2011

After I finished upgrading Xubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, I discovered that my keyboard stopped working in X Server. The upgrade process was running smoothly until the last moment, when it produced some error, which I, unfortunately, did not write down. Anyway, the upgrade has completed; uname shows kernel version 2.6.32-31. Now the keyboard works fine if I select a recovery mode at startup, but if I type 'start gdm' from the shell or select the default option in GRUB while booting, the keyboard becomes unavailable right from the login screen. I can log on using the virtual keyboard, but that's all I can do; the keyboard is still dead.

Networking :: Cannot Ssh Into Server From Work

Jun 1, 2010

There is a server at my house that I store a lot of info on and do most of my work on. Normally, when I get online somewhere I ssh into my server and get to work, but all of the sudden, I can't do it from my work place. I have tried changing the port numbers around, but that didn't help. I also can't ping anything when I'm on my work network anymore, I just get a message saying packet filtered. If I connect to a local coffee shop internet, it works just fine and I have full access.

So my question is this, can I do anything about this? If worst comes to worse, I can tether my internet access though my phone, but it is a lot slower than my works internet connection and it really kills my battery.

Server :: Getting MySQL To Work With SSL?

Mar 3, 2010

I have installed the MySQL server on two machines and got them to work as master - master over the internet. But since this is not very safe I wanted to get them to work over SSL. I first setup one machine and that worked. However, after setting the second machine to work over SSL it all stopped. I have checked many howto and faq documents without success.

It seems to be related to the certificate I think. This is a dump from the /var/log/syslog file for MySQL:

Mar 3 17:33:02 asterix mysqld: SSL error: Unable to get certificate from '/etc/mysql/mysqlcerts/remoteMaster/client-cert.pem'
Mar 3 17:33:02 asterix kernel: [ 7209.109831] type=1503 audit(1267633982.018:274): operation="open" pid=1324 parent=1071 profile="/usr/sbin/mysqld" requested_mask="r::" denied_mask="r::" fsuid=102 ouid=102 name="/etc/mysql/mysqlcerts/remoteMaster/ca-cert.pem"
Mar 3 17:33:02 asterix kernel: [ 7209.109877] type=1503 audit(1267633982.018:275): operation="open" pid=1324 parent=1071 profile="/usr/sbin/mysqld" requested_mask="r::" denied_mask="r::" fsuid=102 ouid=102 name="/etc/mysql/mysqlcerts/remoteMaster/client-cert.pem"

This is repeated many times...

I have copied the certificate files in a folder that is owned by mysql:mysql so I assumed that this would be ok.

CentOS 5 Server :: Getting FTP To Work On 5.2?

Feb 27, 2009

I am a Windows user for the last 14 years and am getting into the Linux world. I have a CentOS server set up at home and have been using SFTP. But now I am needing to install a program that has a exe file I can lauch from my Windows machine to the CentOS server but the only problem is it only uses FTP over port 21. I have found quite a few different posting on how to install FTP but only some of the commands they give work and I get a lot of no such directory. I will be using the FTP locally but have been getting frustrated setting it up. I do have it installed an am able to start the service but cannot connect. Is there a step by step information for setting this up? I am new to the command line and all the SCO stuff I used to know back in the early 90's is all gone from memory.
