In earlier versions of (K)ubuntu, I have used SCIM and the Yawerty input method to input Russian with a phonetic Latin keyboard.SCIM does not seem to work with Kubuntu 10.04, and UIM does not have (as far as I can tell from searching the repositories) Russian input. The Russian keyboard layout installable in Kubuntu is in the Russian version of the layout, rather than a phonetic Latin layout; I am not familiar with the normal Russian layout and I do not have stickers to stick on the keys to guide myself in using that layout.

I'm using kubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso live (booted via grub2 loopback directly from iso on hd, in case that makes a difference). Processor is a E2180 which according to the Intel website supports the NX bit. I've enabled the option "Execute Bit Support" in the BIOS. /proc/cpuinfo shows both nx and pae in both flags lines. But dmesg says "Using x86 segment limits to approximate NX protection".

I was trying to install packages from the Kubuntu CD to get the Broadcom driver installed but when it tried to load any of the packages on the CD it said they couldn't be found. I ultimately ended up copying the packages from the CD and installing the packages and their dependencies by hand through the console.

I have a problem with a new mouse that I just bought. I cannot get my new Cyborg R.A.T 3 mouse to run under kubuntu. I am able to control the cursor and click on items that appear in it's immediate window. Example: I can click K start icon, but I can't interact with the actual start menu once I've opened it.

I was trying to setup gogui to work on kubuntu, using instructions found on an ubuntu forum: [URL]. I did not even have Java installed yet, so I first tried installing some of the sun-java6 packages. Usually kpackage is good at picking dependent packages and installing them also, but apparently not this time. Next time I tried using kpackage, I was not able to do anything. It gave me a message saying I had broken dependencies, and should use synaptic or aptitude. I do not even have these installed! I think that un-installing the Java software and starting over should do the trick, but I'm not sure how to do this from the command line. Also the instructions in the link above never worked for me.

So I wanna try out xbuntu and kubuntu but will software that says it will install on ubuntu will it install on the others too just as easy? On a side note are there any distros that will be more windows like? where i can install stuff using an exe? I'm horrible with this command line thing. It dont even have to install with exe just as long as it will install without me having to use the command line prompt thing.

I have a fresh install of Kubuntu on an old Dell Dimension 2400 that seems to be working perfectly except for the network connection. I have a wired network connection to a linksys router connected to a cable modem. This connection works on other devices.
Code:
ifconfig
eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0b:db:b6:cf:09

I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.

I have looked around almost everywhere for a way to run Minecraft on my PowerPC with Maverick, but nothing seems to be working. I'm not sure if it's a problem with getting Java on here (which I can't seem to do without it saying you have to have some other Java file there, or something) or a problem with liblwjgl.so (which is apparently not compiled correctly for PPCs).

I'm trying to run minecraft.jar. The download page states that the .jar is executable, but when I try to run it it's as if it was a tarball rather than an executable file. I don't want to extract anything, I want to run it. I tried the instructions on the website: Code: java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp Minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame but that didn't work, and I got this error:

I'm trying out the old, free version of Minecraft, and I cannot seem to be able to move. If I press F9, I sometimes get an options screen, and sometimes not. I have F9 bound to scale in Compiz, though I had the same problem with Metacity. If I press any of the movement keys, I do not move, though I can use my mouse. I'm using sun-java6-plugin.

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

I'm trying to fully automate a Minecraft server, and I decided to use Ubuntu 11.04 on this computer. The computer I'm using for it is an old computer (it's the old family PC, it's about 5 years old (and running amazingly now that I've formatted the hard drive (compared to how it used to run))) so it won't run the Unix environment (or something like that) and runs the Gnome environment instead.
Anyways; the server auto-starts when my computer turns on (my computer also automatically turns on). Now all I need to do is have my computer auto-shutdown at 12:00AM as well as enter the command "stop" into the running terminal. I plan to later add more commands (such as automatically welcoming people to the server when they connect, but that's not important right now and I'll likely be able to figure out if I can get this working).
This is the command I'm using to shutdown the computer:
sudo shutdown -P 24:00
However, it doesn't work. First of all, I need to enter my password, so I need some way to have the shell file enter my password for me whenever the terminal asks for it. Second of all, it just plan doesn't work, even if I enter my password (like, the countdown doesn't appear). As for entering commands into the terminal, the only way I can think of is:echo "stop" But the problem is that doesn't work because it wont enter into the running terminal (and I don't know how to do that).

I wasn't sure weather to post here or on the minecraft forums.
OS: Ubuntu 11.04 x86
CPU: Intel core i5 sandy bridge 2410M
GPU: Intel HD 3000 (Integrated)
RAM: 8 gigs ddr3
So I got my new laptop a few days ago, loaded up ubuntu. After starting up minecraft to connect to my server I realised that the fps was going from 50 to 1 and back to 50 again EVERY SECOND so obviously this isn't normal. After a quick google search every one on windows seems to have no problem. There are no results for linux.
Edit: Yes I know why the are you using a x86 os on a computer with 8 gigs of ram? At the time of installation all I had was no internet access and a live cd from LUD with ubuntu on it

I recently loaded up my old powermac g3 with debian 6.0 PPC, and it seems to be running quite good. I control it using ssh from my windows 7 box. I installed default-jre, so I could run the minecraft server on there.
I've got two questions: I installed Openvpn, but I'm a bit confused on how to use it.. I want people to be able to connect to my vpn network over the internet, what configuration should I use, and could someone maybe link me a decent step by step tutorial?
secondly, when I tried to launch the server, it tried to generate a new map, but this is taking ages! on my desktop computer, it only took two seconds, but after over half an hour, it only got to 20% of "preparing spawn area" what could be wrong with this? Any reason why the java virtual machine would have performance issues? I have no clue.. I haven't tried copying over my smp map from my windows box yet, and launching that.. but I doubt performance will be any better. (my windows 7 machine is hosting at the moment for about 10 people)

I can run Minecraft if I log in to su but I have a user to whom I do not wish to give su permission. If I try to run Minecraft from the terminal without signing into su first, I get a lot of error messages that I do not understand. I think it might have something to do with having to give the user permission to run java but I am not sure.
Here is the output:

Current time is Jan 9, 2016 5:31:46 PM
System.getProperty('os.name') == 'Linux'
System.getProperty('os.version') == '3.16.0-4-amd64'

I just changed my sound profile in the sound preferences menu to Analog Surround 5.1 Output, and now since doing that, Flash player in Firefox has no sound and when I play Minecraft there is also no sound. Sound was working before I did this. I have tried reverting back to the previous settings, but that did not work. I tried rebooting, but no successes from that either. Also, when I test my speakers through sound preferences, they work. System sounds also work.

So I was using Minecraft and it was working just fine, but then I got a rather common error. The fix is always to switch over to java sun. I did this, but now it has a black screen when I start the game. I realized after this that I hadn't tried simply reinstalling minecraft. reinstalling it did not fix the new problem. Can anyone tell me either how to switch back to jdk or how to fix the black screen?
