Apr 2, 2010I had my Logitech Webcam/mic working perfectly, in 8.10, but when I upgraded to 9.10, the video stopped working. The camera works in lots of other software,Cheese to luvcview to testing with gstreamer-properties But Skype's video crashes when I try to use the video camera. Usually a segmentation fault.
Lots of other threads here suggest that using the version of skpye packages in medibuntu is the solution. So I added medibuntu to my /etc/apt/sources.list, reloaded to get the latest directories. I don't see any "skype" to install, either in Synaptics or in the shell with apt-get Output from apt-cache search is

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Set Microphone With Skype?
May 17, 2010I go to System>Preferences>Sound>Input. The setting, that I had previously placed at 50 %, is now at 10 %. I try to drag it with the mouse but it refuses to move. I have to hang up the communication and then take it back to 50 %. After I call again, we can talk OK. What can I do to correct this trouble? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010.

All i see is a little pop up that says someone is calling me, but I cannot hear the ringtone. When i pick up, i hear the other end clearly, there's just no ringtone with someone calls me

Jul 12, 2010Everything works outside of Skype. Speakers work in Skype, but the microphone stays dead. I've dumped Pulseaudio, made sure volume is up in Alsa, rebooted, but Skype still lists Pulseaudio as what it's using! How do I get its tiny mind to use something else? There was also a thread saying an earlier version of Skype, 2.1.0.47, used to work, but I can't find a 64-bit version of that. I've got the 32-bit version which I could run in a 32-bit ubuntu in virtualbox, but fergawdssake there has to be a better way!How do I make sure the system isn't still somehow using Pulseaudio? I did purge it. It should be gone. Output of various system specs:

Sep 6, 2010i just installed ubuntu netbook remix 10.04.1 on an aspire one 532h netbook, and everything works great except i cant get the mic to work with skype. i know the mic is working correctly because i tried it in sound recorder and was able to record and playback my voice.all sound levels are where they should be, and everything seems to be in order. i'm using the latest beta of skype also. i installed pavucontrol but that didn't do anything.because the mic is working, i'm beginning to think it may be a problem with skype.

Sep 26, 2010Just upgraded to Lucid (32bit), pulse generally seems to work ok: I get sound out, I can see various apps connecting via the Sound Preferences dialog (audacious, flash via alsa interface, etc.), and my mic seems to work fine too.
However, when starting skype (v2.1.0.81 which defaults to pulseaudio if it's running), it isn't able to output any sound and I never see a connection appear in Sound Preferences. Don't really want to force it to use Alsa or anything like that; I'd be fine with pulse if it would just work.
I've tried installing the .deb from the skype site as well as the official ubuntu package, with the same result. Any idea why pulse seems to be working, but skype can't seem to use it properly?

Surprisingly the Sound Recorder works perfectly but skype and ekiga are not able to transfer my voice. I have tried playing around with gnome ALSA mixer and PulseAudio Volume Control but nothin changes.

I was able to get it to work in the Sound Recorder Application and in the System Testing function, but when I do the Skype Test Call, or call someone with Skype, while I can hear the other person perfectly well, my microphone does not appear to work at all, so it is a strictly one way conversation.
I've made sure with the ALSA Mixer that everything is turned on, and all my sound settings are fine, but microphone won't work in Skype.

Apr 16, 2011I have a macbook 2.1 and successfully installedubuntu 10.04 with no problems other than the headphone jac doesn't work and the iSight i had to follow instructions to make it work..however, I cannot use it in skype. It works with cheese and ekiga, but most of the people I chat with are on skype. The driver on skype says "built-in iSight (v4l2) whereas the skype says "built-in iSight (/dev/video0) when I go into the gstreamer-properties, for video it is selected as V4L2 and in the pipeline it reads (v4l2src device="/dev/video0")
When I click test it all works fine, its just that skype doesn't work with the camera. shows I have one, I click test in skype settings and the screen stays black and the green light showing its on turns on....and when I'm in a call i try to make it work and it flashes the green light and doesnt work at all... anyone know a solution or haing the same problem?

Apr 20, 2011I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop computer. In general things work pretty well but I cannot get the webcam to work in Skype. It's a Zebronics webcam, not sure of the model number. I installed Cheese to see if it shows videos from the webcam connected to the computer and it does. In Skype preference I can see that Skype looks for the webcam in /dev/video0 but apparently it can't find anything there.
I wish there was some client program in Ubuntu/Linux which supported both audio call and video chat on the yahoo network. Kopete supports only video and Gyache is not compatible with the new Yahoo 10 protocol or whatever it is. Extremely frustrating for someone who is trying to get others to use Ubuntu instead of Windows.

May 3, 2011I noticed in the new Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity, when in dual monitor the icon of skype is not placed in the tray when "closed". It is only placed in the background, so that I have to kill the process and open a new one. To be sincere, I see a strange aspect of the entire tray when in dual monitor. Is anyone else noticing the same?

Feb 20, 2010I can get my Plantronics USB headset to work with Skype. So far so good.
However if I plug the headset in to use with skype, I have to go to sound preferences to get the usb headset to be the selected audio device. It is automatically detected but is not selected.
Is there a way to have ubuntu netbook remix automatically select the usb headset as soon as it is detected after being plugged in?
Win7 behaves this way and my wife is used to it. Visiting the sound preferences every time the headset is plugged in won't do. Answering a call in Skype requires that the headset be selected straight away. Leaving it plugged in all the time isn't convenient either.

Feb 24, 2010I have just installed 9.10 64bit Karmic Koala on a Sony VAIO VGN-NR110E.
Everything seems to be working fine out of the box...
I have my camera WORKING. I have tested it through VLC and the video is visible. I have installed Skype, and after setting up the source of the mic and video, SOUND works. Microphone from NX-6000 records sound, I can talk to someone on Skype with no problems.
The only issue i have is that in Skype settings, when I click on the TEST button in the VIDEO menu, the camera blinks, but the screen stays black. When I initiate a conversation, and enable my video, all I see is a white box in the corner, and the same thing shows up on the screen of the person I am speaking with. The sound however works flawlessly.

Feb 26, 2010i am having a problem with skype that i wasn't having before, and afaik skype hasn't been upgraded recently, so something else presumably has changed.
because of driver issues i have to use an external usb audio interface to do voip. this interface is not connected to the pulseaudio server. i am able to connect it to jackd and it works fine for both audio in and out. however it no longer shows up in the list of sound devices available to skype. this used not to be the case. i have tried stopping and restarting skype, as well as unplugging and reattaching the interface. the interface does not show up in pulseaudio manager in the lists of devices.
