I'm trying to boot from cd so that I can reinstall 9.10 after the upgrade to 10.04 has caused some issues with programs I've been running.
However, I can't seem to get the comp to boot from cd. i know the 9.10 cd works because I had originally installed Ubuntu using it and can't figure out why now with ubuntu installed I can't get the cd to boot.
I recently did a side by side install of lubuntu on my windows 7 laptop. My HDD is actually 2 x 250GB HDDs. I have Win7 on the first, and chose to put Lubuntu on a part of the second. However, when I boot, I can only see the options for that second drive. when I went into the boot order It only shows the Harddrive as an option, not which one. Is there any way I can boot from my first drive again? I need to be able to get at my Windows 7, it is my main OS as I need Excel 07 for a college course. (due to auto-grading none others will work, not even office for mac (which is missing pivot-tables anyways).
So to summarize, I seem to have lost the ability to boot from the first hard drive, and cant find the separate hard disks in the boot order. Preferrablly I would like both OSes (Win7 and Lubuntu) to appear on the same boot choice list, but at least I would like to be able to access Windows7 and only use Lubuntu when I need it. (mainly for my Compouter Science coursework)
I downloaded cd1 of amd64 debian os. Its not booting from the CD. There are no problems with the drive or the laptop. I have successfully installed ubuntu from its cd image booting from the CD-ROM drive.

So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
I have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? Well, turns out it should not have been recommended. I had restarted and all I got was a low res ubuntu logo and a boot right into a full screen terminal. Tried startx and got a no screens found, I look online for about an hour last night and decided to just reinstall, which takes a couple hours when installing all the packages.
I have done more research today and found to install the latest linux x64 driver from nVidias website, which I did, but it does not run. I followed some more instructions and it said to do a �sudo chmod +x <file>� which I did, and it starts to open and I get �You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing.�

I had an Ubuntu Server 32 bit installation and everything was working fine. Now that I installed Ubuntu Server 64bit on a new drive in the same machine, the ethernet card is not working!! This is insane cause when I put the hard disk with the 32bit installation back and booting from it, the ethernet card is working without any problems but in the 64bits installation it is not shown at all using "ifconfig -a"

I have very interesting problem after ~10 PHP Fatal error, php 5(latest one) in apache2(latest one) in Ubuntu Server 10.10(with latest updates) just do not work. So if try any php page it's not working(user see white page), but HTML still work fine.What that can be? So only restart apache is help to back php. (we are running Wordpress blog 3.1)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded Samba to 3.5.2 to enable Windows 7 to log in to the PDC. ACL was working with the Samba 3.0.28a that came with 8.04LTS. After upgrade I can now log in to the domain with Win 7 but ACL permissions are not working on Win7, XP or anything. They still show on the server but any attempt to change permissions on the workstation fails with "Access is Denied" and only user/group/other permissions are doing anything. Anyone know what changes for the ACL were made between the two versions? I know they're working on switching to VFS modules but setting "vfs objects = acl_xattr"
View 1 Replies View RelatedOK so I set up a server yesterday and got ndiswrapper loaded on it with the appropriate driver, I edited the /etc/network/interfaces file to contact my router with it's MAC address, WEP Key, etc... So the problem is I can ping addresses like Google and Ubuntu Forums but I can't use apt-get to install or update packages. When I try sudo apt-get update I get a whole bunch of Code: W: Failed to fetch <address>Temporary Failure resolving <address>My Wireless interface is wlan0 and also I can ping my server from my other computer running Linux and my server can ping that computer too.

I'm especially interested in Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Intel Moblin, and when my internet comes back tomorrow, xPud. I'm kinda freaked at Moblin though because there isn't an option to split the hard drive to account for its space, and even if there were, I'm freaked that a GRUB won't show up Ubuntu or even Windows 7
My requirements:
1. Boots up in 5-15 seconds on 1.3GHz processor/4GB RAM or within 10 seconds on a netbook which has 1.6GHz Atom and 1GB RAM
2. Has to have a good-looking window manager (so a customised Linux distro with something like Fluxbox/Blackbox is out). Something like what's in netbook designed OS's are good
3. Has to actually be able to run good on laptops that aren't netbooks, for I'm hoping to run the OS on proper laptops too
4. Can be propiertary, though open-source and free is good too and preferable
5. Has to have a GRUB so I can switch between Ubuntu/Windows 7/whatever fast-booting OS it might be or at least an easy way to switch between the 3. More preferable is that it comes as an .exe that can be installed inside Windows, like xPud

Went to bed last night and left the computer running, something weird occured this morning (media file wouldn't play) so I just decided to restart.
now I am getting this,
Mount of root filesystem failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system.
ctrl-d just brings me back to the above error message.

I tried booting up in recovery mode and it says that it "Gave up" waiting for the root partition or the root device. I tried running the LiveCD i have that i used to install and the partition manager shows the partition still there so i have no idea what the problem is.
