Ubuntu :: VirtualBox Stopped Working (Starts Booting Then Closes)
Oct 12, 2010
I'm running VirtualBox in Ubuntu 10.10. Been using VirtualBox for ages. It stopped working a few weeks ago but I'm baffled. Windows XP begins to load and you see the animated progress bar then it powers down. There are no errors and it's not creating any log files.

When I load XP in VirtualBox it starts off with the keyboard working. However, if I leave my computer for 10mins the Ubuntu computer/screensaver lock comes in. When I then go back to my VirtualBox I cannot select the CTRL-right to activate the keyboard. The mouse still works correctly but I cannot type anything.

I migrated a few VirtualBox vdi's to a new laptop. My Windows XP and 7 virtual hard drives imported nicely when I created and started the guests; however, Fedora bombs as soon as the boot progress bar completes. I get this error message: VirtualBox GUI has stopped working.

I have this issue with Rhythmbox where if I tried to open it trhough Applications > Sound & Video, the program would start and close almost immediately.
I ran it in CLI & got:
Code:
rhythmbox
** (rhythmbox:3378): DEBUG: Loading the real store page
** (rhythmbox:3378): DEBUG: navigation requested to https://one.ubuntu.com/music/store-no-token
Segmentation fault
So what now, re-install through Synaptic?

I have a problem with LibreOffice 3.3.3.1 (from the libreoffice stable repository) and some (not all!) .doc files. When opening some .doc files LibreOffices starts and directly closes . The same problem occurs (for the same files) with LibreOffice from the unstable repository. When I go back to the LibreOffice version (3.3.1) shiped with 11.4. everything works fine. Hence, if you have problems with some .doc files downgrade to 3.3.1.

I haven't used my VB for a few weeks however all of a sudden it refuses to work for my normal non-root user. It's almost as if it can't find libraries in the /opt/VirtualBox directory. Initially it refused to start completely so I linked the required libs into /usr/lib64 ( yip real hack. Then it started but a vm would not start, and comes up with an error about a missing lib again which is definitely there. My non-root user is in the vb group and nothing besides system updates has changed. vb 3.2.10 slack64-current.

I had Ubuntu installed in Windows XP (with Wubi). One day my motherboard, let's just say stopped working. So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.

Upon booting, how can I know which program starts first? Also, how can I force something to start after something else? For instance, how do I make sure that everything I deem as "not urgent" to load after the GUI and also how do I make sure things like firestarter start before fail2ban, etc?

Ran preupgrade for F11 to F12. Everything ok there it seemed. Upon reboot, it started booting the kernel, then the video disappeared, no signal to monitor. After about 15min, I just rebooted and managed to get make to Fedora 11.
Considering just going with DVD upgrade. I googled preupgrade no video and here as well, and several unrelated things seemed to come up.

I have ubuntu 11.04 with virtualbox installed. I have some old vmware virtual machines on an NTFS partition that I am able to successfully boot with virtualbox at my ubuntu desktop however, when I vnc into my desktop from a remote location and start up virtualbox and try to boot my virutal machines, I get:
Quote:
Failed to open a session for virtual machine.. the virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 0.
result code NS_ERROR_FAILURE 0x80004005
component: MACHINE
interface: IMACHINE
from googling this some people have indicated this means my username is not in the virtualbox user group, but I am logging in with the same username over vnc as I do when sitting at the machine where virtualbox works fine. the directory the machines are on is mounted, not sure why I can't boot them what else could be causing my problem? has anyone ever setup vnc4server on ubuntu and got virtualbox working?

I installed 10.04 on daughter's laptop. It's been working perfectly but suddenly it's refusing to boot. Sadly, she's now half way around the world so I can't fiddle around to get it working. She's posted me a photo of the screen.
Here's what seems to be the important part:
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.

So, first of all, this is my sisters computer so I am not sure exactly what happened. I had installed ubuntu alongside WinXp a couple of weeks ago. Today she booted into xp for the first time and accidentally launched some system restore option. A dialog box appeared and told that if she continued, everything on her disk would be erased. apparently, there was no indication of how to not to continue, so she shut it down by holding the power button.
Now, it won't boot. Not even to grub, it just cycles where the screen comes on, a courser blinks in the top left, and then it automatically restarts after about 5 seconds and repeats (unless one launches BIOS configuration). I assume something about the MBR has gotten messed up. I tried booting off a USB thumb drive, but it just accessed the drive for a second or two, and then went back into the cycle (I tried every USB socket, and the BIOS was configured properly to boot off external USB, also, I was able to boot my computer from the USB)
how to proceed if I can't even boot off of USB. Oh, the computer is Asus Eee pc netbook (no CD drive).

maybe my questions sounds funny: i'm looking for a very small (or better as small as necessary) distro which runs in a virtual box an starts wine. The reason is: we have new laptops in my school runnig windows7 64bit home and we have some software which runs only on WinXP. So why not take a virtualbox wich runs wine to start the old Software?

I'm dual-booting Ubuntu 10.4 (grub2) and Windows 7 (x64). Something stomped on my grub install on the windows boot sector (probably windows). I was getting errors like "Cannot find disk.." I updated my grub.cfg to what I thought should work and now I'm getting errors like "cannot find C/H/S values".
I've attached the RESULTS.txt. Its really a simple install, although I do have a RAID5 array; the RAID disks are just for data and hold no OS files. Both OS's are on /dev/sdd.

Last night I couldn't access my webserver, so I ran downstairs and turned on the monitor, only to find a "GRUB" prompt on the screen. I don't really know much about grub, but it didn't seem to accept any input anyway, so I rebooted, and after the server went through all its hardware checks, the "GRUB" prompt reappeared, still unresponsive to any input.
Next I booted with the F11 DVD and selected "Rescue Mode" from the menu. That looked hopeful. I was able to mount my filesystem, but I have no idea what I'm looking for or how to fix it. The manual hasn't been too helpful, and I haven't found any "how to guides" that address this kind of thing.
How does a solid reliable system like this just stop working? How can I get it back on its feet, and is there anything I can do to prevent whatever happened from happening again? Am I doing anything wrong?
This server has been running nonstop and trouble-free for about four years now. I upgraded from F10 to F11 without incident. I'm running Apache httpd, Tomcat (through httpd via ajp13), and sshd (only accessible from the local network). I update everything with yum on a weekly basis. The server is on a private network with port 80 NATted through the cable modem and a wireless router. The wireless network is secured with WPA2 Personal.
I was just about to upgrade to F13 before this happened, and I'm now wondering if I should do a clean install and start over, or if installing F13 as an upgrade will fix whatever is wrong with the system. I've always felt you had to get everything in working order before you even think of upgrading, but I don't know if that applies to Linux. Will I just end up with a F13 system that won't boot?

Fedora 14 on my laptop has randomly decided that it hates me. The system stops booting after "starting atd", right when its starting X. It "hangs" after the fedora logo, though it will reboot when I try "ctrl-alt-delete". I can see that haldaemon is failing to start, and when I boot the kernel with "selinux=0" it gives me an error message:
error while loading shared libraries: libdbus-glib-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. NetworkManager fails with same message. the .so file is in its proper directory, where it has been all along. I've tried booting into runlevels 2 and 3. No luck there either. It'll boot to the login prompt, but as soon as I under my userid the screen flashes. I managed to get the error message it was giving me before the flash: inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 503: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT` failed!
I can boot into single user mode just fine. I've checked dmesg and Xorg logs, but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for (and I imagine that those logs would be useless if I boot into runlevel 1, since the error is at higher runlevels. But I can't get the logs for those because the computer just hangs. SSH and networking are never enabled before the hang.)
I'm at a loss here. I use the machine for both school and work [and I have quite a bit of both to do today] and I've been trying to get it to boot normally for hours now. Anyone have any ideas that I could try?

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

I found out that my installation was incomplete. So I reinstalled Debian using the businesscard image on a DVD. It worked fine, but I have a hardware constraint on my computer. I have two SATA hard drives and one SATA CD/DVD drive, and only two SATA connections on the motherboard. So, to install Debian I had to remove one hard drive and put the CD/DVD drive. When I saw that Debian was working, I removed the CD/DVD drive, and that's when Debian stopped booting. It said it couldn't find tty and opened BusyBox, giving me a command-line interface, and the line started with (initramfs) before the commands (with the parenthesis).

I have been carrying out updates of both Vista & SuSE whenever i operate in them.
One (Not So) Fine Day, when i Choose from the Grub loader "Microsoft Windows Vista SP2" option it just din't boot into Vista. I have Tried many a time.
My First doubt was towards Vista only, so i choose the "Windows Recovery Mode" option from Grub. It went into the Recovery mode. I ran Memory Tests on Windows Partition, took its own sweet time, whatever missing indexes and all it carried out and finally gave the Thumbs Up result. After that, i carried out Startup Repairs, all came out well. So, Yet again i restarted and tried to get in Vista. Nope, dint work.

I randomly started up my laptop one day and the mouse and keyboard stopped responding once GDM's login screen came up. Everything works fine from the console, but even if I run startx from the login shell the mouse and keyboard do not work, even though everything else in GNOME runs perfectly.
I am using an HP dv6426us laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 (i686 architecture with the 2.6.28-15-generic kernel). Below is a copy of my xorg.conf file, just in case there might be something wrong with that. I will try and put more information on, but seeing as I have to use a different computer to post this thread, copying over log files and stuff is difficult for the moment (though I am going to try and copy them over to a flash drive).
