Ubuntu :: Blank Boxes In Login Screen (Lucid Lynx?

Jul 30, 2010

I installed Lucid Lynx on a medium-old system, Athlon 2200+ with an ATI video card. No problems during the install itself. The problem is that when I boot into the login screen, I get a bunch of blank boxes. If I move the mouse around, I can see various areas highlighted, but I can't actually see the menu options. I can type in my username and password to log in (not being able to see what I'm typing), but then the desktop panels are empty boxes - once again I can mouse over them to get empty drop down menus, but I can't see anything else.

I've had enough experience with Ubuntu in the past to do some troubleshooting myself. Usually I would just boot into a terminal, switch Xorg to use the vesa driver and go from there. However, a number of decisions in Lucid Lynx have made troubleshooting practically impossible.1 - No grub menu. No way for me to pick a safe boot option.2 - Install CD doesn't come with any rescue boot options.3 - Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server and Ctrl-Alt-F1 to boot into a shell don't work.4 - the default filesystem is ext4, which means my old rescue CDs aren't likely to be of much help.Sigh. I understand that Ubuntu is trying to make things look pretty and all, but these user-friendly changes are making it near impossible to fix a problem like the one I have. I just downloaded a System Rescue Linux CD but it's kind of late to be trying it out now.

Slackware :: Emacs Can't Use Fcitx Input Method?

May 10, 2011

i'm a Chinese student, after I upgraded slackware13.1 to slakcware13.37, I find that I can't use the fcitx input method in emacs to type Chinese. One method is to comment parts of the font path in /etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa file. I can use fcitx input method in the first emacs that I opened and then when I open a new emacs, I can't use fcitx input method and it indicates that the Ctrl+Space key combination is the Mark command. What's wrong with this problem?

Ubuntu :: Eliminate Constant Password Logins?

Feb 19, 2011

Very often I have to leave my computer for a few minutes while in the process of downloading files, or just to get a cup of coffee, and when I come back, I have to re-enter my password to continue. This level of security is unnecessary since I am the only one here, and there is no danger of anyone ever messing with my PC. How can I eliminate these annoying login requests? One reason I am trying to get away form Windows is to have the computer do what I want, and not what other people think I want. I have been experimenting with various Linux OSs and several versions of Ubuntu, and this is an annoyance in every one I try.

I don't know why its called "GRUB 2" while it is actually GRUB 1.98 or 1.99. Anyway. So here's the thing. Due to the fact that I am dual-booting Ubuntu + Windows XP, my GRUB menu would show up during boot with or without me holding down SHIFT. This takes several seconds. What I'd like to do is that GRUB does not show up at all during "normal" boot and only shows up when I hold down the SHIFT right after BIOS POST.

Software :: Count And Eliminate A Repeating Char (-) Leading Up To A Needed Sequence?

Apr 22, 2011

I have a file that contains a number of lines of DNA sequences like the single (yet very long) line below. There are far too many trailing and ending dashes then is needed in the file (however some are needed so I cant just delete all leading and trailing dashes). Therefore, I want to count the number of dashes leading up to the first base (either an A,C,T, or G) for every line in the file. I then want remove the smallest number of leading and trailing dashes among all the lines from each line in the file.So basically lets say the smallest number of trailing dashes between all lines in the file is 300 and the smallest number of leading dashes between all lines in the file is 500 dashes. I then want to subtract 500 dashes from the beginning of every line and 300 dashes from the end of every line. I hope this explanation is clear.

Some dialog boxes are too big for my monitor. I have tried re-sizing using mouse's middle button but there seems to be a limit to the amount you can reduce, which leaves them still too big??

I have hidden both top/bottom bars.

I am prevented from setting up a wireless connection. 1. Because the 'Editing Wirelss Connection' box/window is too long to be able to click apply?? 2.Because all the tuts I find are for older versions and don't seem to apply now?

I starting to think maybe Ubuntu is not for me, I am not a programmer?
