General :: Backing Up System With Two HDs?

Sep 5, 2010

I have a Seagate USB drive that I'd like to use as a backup drive for my home system with two drives. One drive contains /home and /root, the other contains /var. I've read about a lot of different software for backups but I'm not really sure which one would be the best for this. I want to be able to use this backup to restore the system just in case something happens. What would be the best software to use for this? I'd like something that will basically clone the system I assume since I'd like it to not only copy the system structure but also symlinks.

Debian :: Backing Up The Full System Onto A Bootable CD/DVD?

Nov 10, 2010

I come from a PCLinuxOS tradition (about two years), and a great full backup program was mklivecd, where I would use a GUI to make a bootable livecd/dvd with all my system which was handy in case something went wrong. Every week or so I would create a DVD ready for emergencies. After looking at the options in Debian (using Squeeze, and very happy with it for a few months now), I'm wondering if there is something similar. Remastersys, it seems, doesn't work with GRUB2 (only with GRUB-legacy), and Partimage makes images, not bootable CDs/DVDs. What is your full-backup/bootable system strategy, something, if possible, as easy/straightforward as mklivecd?

Fedora Servers :: Set Up A System For Backing Up Files?

Nov 17, 2009

I would like to set up a system for backing up files and even possibly using it to keep music on and listen to it over the network. I am wondering which would be better to use a separate FTP server or buy one of the NAS enclosures and a couple of hard drives to put in it. I am assuming that the NAS would be accessed via NFS. I have never run an FTP server and I have never had used NAS.I am just looking for pros and cons to each one. I would just like opinions as to which service (FTP/NFS) would be better for this task.

Ubuntu :: Almost Perfect Update To 9.10 Except Sound

Nov 1, 2009

After many troubles with an update, I did a clean install if 9. 10 64-bit and it seems to work really well. First thing I did, was install the restricted codec and Tweak. using tweak I added Chromium and VLC. Then I right-click the speaker icon and un-muted the system. I then opened the Sound preference and in the hardware menu and disabled the Internal Audio and the R700 Audio Device. The Sound Blaster Live Value card is the only one highlighted..the Setting is "Analog Surround 5.0 Output". But still no sound!! When I did a fresh install of 9.04 the sound was automatically installed and I got the start up drum sound but nothing now. Kinda frustrating considering everything else seems to work fine compared to others even feels a little better than 9.04 but the sound thing is not cool.

Here is the terminal output for aplay -l:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Renoise Works Perfect But No Other App Has Sound

Feb 8, 2010

Recently I installed Renoise demo and followed their install instructions from the Renoise 2.1 quickstart guide. It said if you get any errors to do the following:

Configuring Realtime Threads:
If you get a warning message when you start Renoise, read this section. To allow Renoise to create realtime threads, which are required for low latencies with ALSA or JACK, you have to
edit the /etc/security/limits.conf file. A realtime kernel does NOT help here, it does not set the required options automatically! To enable RT thread creation via PAM open the /etc/security/limits.conf file in a text editor as root (or sudo). Then somewhere near the end of the file add:

YOURUSERNAME - rtprio 99
YOURUSERNAME - nice -10
Replace YOURUSERNAME with your username. You can discover this with the 'whoami' command.
Alternatively you could also create a group named "Audio", add your user to that group, and use '@Audio'
instead of 'YOURUSERNAME'.
Save the file. Log Out. Login. At this point it should be working. To verify that it works, launch Renoise, select ALSA and make sure the 'Realtime threads' option is on. You will get a friendly warning like the one above. If RT creation failed. Try again.

Jack Configuration
If you don't have "Jack Control (JACK Audio Connection Kit)", we recommend that you install it.
Jack Control allows easy Audio/MIDI routing with an intuitive GUI. On Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get install jackd qjackctl
Now you can start it from [Applications] -> [Audio] -> [Jack Control].
Click the "Setup" button, and set following values:
Change the "Priority" value to 89. (If you use realtime kernel, also add check mark beside "Realtime")
Change the "Periods/buffer" value to 3 or more.

In addition, please configure latency and other settings according to the needs of your system. Now I don't have sound where and when I used to, for example: songbird no longer plays sound tho it plays the track and no sound in web browsers aswell, like ..... plays but no sound. It has to be something simple because audio for everything was fine until editing that one file and installing that audio jack program.

2. If not, any insights on where the problems usually are?

The Beta 1 has been scheduled for the time the original Beta was scheduled for, and Beta 2 has been scheduled for 20110414. For those of you who have seen my profile, that falls on the day I turn 18! OpenSUSE :: SUSE Would Be Perfect If It Used Debian Package Mangement

Oct 19, 2009

The more I use openSUSE 11.2, the more I love it. Today, I tried another highly recommended KDE4 distro, and while it was nice, I immediately recognized that the excellent integration and refinements SUSE includes are very much to my liking. openSUSE is nearly perfect for me in every way -- except one. The package management continues to leave me baffled.I was hoping I would eventually learn to like it as much as Synaptic, aptitude/apt-get and the other tools on Debian-based distros. But the more I read, the more I am questioning whether I will ever like it.I'm now fairly convinced that Debian-based package management is the gold standard. (Of course, I'm just going on what I have read. I'm far from expert, and I'm hoping to get educated by posting questions like this one.)

But I doubt I will find a distro that is equal to openSUSE in every way except that it uses Debian-based package management. (I wish such a distro existed.)So, if I have to live with YaST, zypper, RPMs, etc., how can I learn to have the best experience with the least amount of investment? Low investment is important because if I really wanted to invest the time to become more of an expert in operating systems, package management, etc., I would probably just jump to Arch Linux and KDEmod and enjoy a rolling release. Or maybe Gentoo, etc. What I like about openSUSE is that it just works. It works out of the box. Except for package management.

deal with the initial setup of all the stuff on another (Debian-based) distro that isn't to my liking or that just doesn't work, and then thereafter enjoy that distro's good package management..have a great out of the box experience and the overall nicest initial OS experience I ever remember, but live every day with a package management system that isn't up to what I experienced under Ubuntu.Quote from the link above: It is almost unfair to include Red Hat in the same category as Suse because, frankly, Suse makes Red Hat look like geniuses. I don't know why a company which can create arguably the most attractive and professional looking distribution available in the Linux world has such a godawful package manager.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Backing Up A New DVD?

Mar 24, 2010

I've been putting my DVDs onto my home network for a while without any probelms until now. When I put in Doubt and try to rip it, the title tree (in both K9 and DVD::Rip) shows several titles of a large filesize and the same time duration (that of the film). About three of the multiple titles are exactly the same file size and duration and then there are about 3 more that differ slightly in both.

I think this must be some kind of anti-piracy measure. Obviously 6 files of 5 GBs wouldn't fit on a DVD so it must be some kind of error/trick. When I try to backup the DVD it doesn't work. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Ubuntu :: Backing Up With Rsynch?

May 21, 2010

I've got a lot of photos, home movies, documents, etc on my machine (currently running with ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64) and i've had issues in the past with hard drives failing. fortunately i've not lost anything substantial as all the important stuff was recovered from backups i had made with blank DVDs.my last desktop rebuild was about 2 years ago and i decided that using blank DVDs to back things up was no longer practical as they're too small and the amount of data i need to backup is too large.hard drive storage used to be quite expensive but they're getting cheaper and cheaper all the time. i bought 2 pretty large, identical drives for($70) each.my machine has 3 hard drives in it. the first is a small solid state drive with the operating system on it, the second has all my data on it (mount point is /data) and a third to backup the stuff i don't want to lose (mount point is /backup).i use the following script to automatically make another copy of all the stuff i want to backup onto a second drive.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
rsync -av --progress --delete --log-file=/home/paul/.backup_logs/rsync.home.$(date

[code]....

this is automatically run at 9pm every night as a root cron job.the 2 lines that begin with "rsynch" do the actual work of backing up my data. the 2 lines that begin with "chown" are just for convenience. they change the owner of the backup log to myself so i can easily delete them without being hindered by ownership issues (the script is run as ROOT so the logs are created, and therefore owned by ROOT).i originally used this article to help set it up in the first place.it explains the process with a good degree of clarity and i can recommend it to anyone who would like more info on this technique.i'm not too worried about losing my system as all the configuration files in the home directory are backed up.it doesn't take too much effort to rebuild the system but it's the personal data that is much harder to replace.

if the data drives fails i will be able to replace it and restore the data from the backup drive. if the backup fails i can just throw it away and make another backup. this whole strategy is designed to guard against a total drive failure. it offers no protection against accidental deletion of files except for the small window between the deletion and when the script is run (anything deleted from the data is also deleted from the backup the next time the script is run).i've only really experienced hard drive failiure 3 or 4 times.the last time the computer started doing all sorts of wierd stuff and i didn't understand the issues involved.

Ubuntu :: Backing Up Files Changes Permissions?

May 14, 2010

I did a clean install of 10.04 over the weekend and copied all of my backed up files from my external drive back to my internal drive. However, I've noticed that when I moved all my files back, they're all now marked as being executable. I've since fixed this, but I was wondering why this happened to begin with?

I use rsync to backup my files (grsync to be exact), but when I do so I copy files from my internal drive, which is formatted as ext4, to my external drive, which is formatted as NTFS (I keep my external drive as NTFS in case I need to hook it up to a Windows machine). Does the file system discrepancy have to do with why my permissions change when I backup/restore my files? Is there a way to prevent this? Or should I be backing up my files a different way?

Ubuntu :: Backuppc Not Backing Up Client?

Oct 28, 2010

I have been struggling to get backuppc running and finally today figured out what I was doing wrong. Backuppc is running on my Ubuntu 10.04 server. I have it backing up my mac, but I can 't get it work on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I followed the same steps I used in getting it to work in my mac, so I can't really see why there is a discrepancy. This is the error log I'm getting now:

Code:
full backup started for directory /
Running: /usr/bin/ssh -q -x -l root 192.168.1.120 /usr/bin/rsync --server --sender --numeric-ids --perms --owner --group -D --links --hard-links --times --block-size=2048 --recursive --ignore-times . /
Xfer PIDs are now 14404
Read EOF: Connection reset by peer
Tried again: got 0 bytes
Done: 0 files, 0 bytes

Got fatal error during xfer (Unable to read 4 bytes) Backup aborted (Unable to read 4 bytes) Not saving this as a partial backup since it has fewer files than the prior one (got 0 and 0 files versus 0) The dreaded 4 bytes error. I was getting that problem before on my mac, but from what I've managed to find, this error usually shows up when you don't have ssh keys set up properly. Once I got that figured out, it started working on my mac. I can confirm that that part is set up because when I execute the following as the backuppc user on the server:

[Code]...
