Programming :: Get Perfect And Complete Way To Start Developing FW Application?

I would like to get help from experts who are experienced in the area of Linux network programming to help me to choose the proper way to create a special Firewall program.I do start reading WinSocket and tending to start BSD. I don't want to start with an API like winsock then stuck. So please, I do need a way to accomplish all features such as capturing, dropping or allowing all kinds of LAYERS as well as Intrusion detection.I am a good programmer in C++ but I am new for linux.So, what is the best Linux OS to install and start with and which is the best way to accomodate C++.
I am very much interested in operating systems and I am a beginner. I just finished understanding OS concepts. I want to create my own OS. But I am thinking of creating a linux distro first and then going towards complicated things. How I need to equip myself for creating it. What should I know, learn and where to start.

Anyway, here is something that is puzzling me and cannot think up a good way around it: I call the constructor and show elements of LoginDialog in the constructor of my QMainWindow, like this:
LoginDialog is a QDialog and it does show up on application start... but... It is not active! The QMainWindow is the active window, even if I put lid->activateWindow();
So, the question is: how do I pop up this dialog on application start in such a way that it will show the LoginDialog on startup as active window?
I'm looking for javascript tutorials or books that meets the following criteria:
1. Very thorough: Starts with the most fundamental concepts and progresses logically from basic to advanced concepts, without skipping over important ideas for the sake of expediency.
2. Lots of small practice exercises that parallel the concepts and syntax being learned.
I've looked at a lot of tutorials, but they all tend to be lacking in one of these areas or the other.
I'm starting work on a little project that uses alot of languages separately (i.e no interaction between languages. Does anyone have any experience like this and could pass on some recommendations as to best practises? I'm thinking either have a eclipse-project for each language stored under a single svn repo, or individual projects for each problem.

so i have installed compiz 9 and it didn't quite work for me, then i have reverted to compiz 8 and things where fine, but after a while my desktop started slowing down for no apparent reason, so i decided to install the nVIDIA drivers from the manufacturer's site, good, i typed in:

Most of FLOSS projects has a lot of code to compile, and a big make process. On my new PC i need a half hour to compile Inkscape, and on my old laptop i need something near to 2 hours. There is a way to put a percentage of the work done in the makefile? (Always there are a hard and dirty way... there is a good, beauty, common way?)
I've got a loop which is able to echo out how complete a process is after each loop (e.g says 25% if the loop has 4 elements and has run once through). Is there any way I can print characters, perhaps a progress bar? I was thinking of using the percentage as a count or something and using.

Is it possible to develop my websites locally before uploading them to my host? I need PHP and MYSQL. I'd like to have basically http access to my websites locally on my hard disk but restrict access to only me. No access outside of this machine. How to do this?

I am running Fedora 8. Each time I run a YUM command, I get the message that there are unfinished transactions, and to run yum-complete-transaction. Upon running yum-complete-transaction, it fails with this error. How can I remove this uncompleted transaction so I can finish the last one?
I have Thunderbird installed and I really enjoy it as an application. I would like to set Thunderbird to start on boot. I tried to locate the binary for it in /usr/bin/ but was not able to. Has anyone done this before or does anyone know how I might go about locating the binary for it?
I just installed the miro internet tv application using yast on my openSUSE 11.2 and I cannot start it.
Running the miro application from console gives me the following output:

I have a binary application that runs only in shell, now I want to open it from another application(Mathematica program) but simply invoking it will start it in memory but not in a shell.
I tryed "bash app" which does not work and "gnome-terminal app" just opens the terminal without launching that application.
Ps: Its the same thing as in Java when you want to invoke a system command like ping but you need to do it like this .exec("cmd ping") instead of just ping.

For example,There is a server A (CentOS) which I have got a normal user name and password but no root control.And my desktop B (Opensuse) which I've got the root authority.Normally, when I do some software developing, I use SSH to login to A. All the developing environment are installed on A, e.g. libraries, PATH, makefile, etc.However, there is a waste of my machine B, because all the test, debugging are performed on A.
I know that sshfs can map a path to local remotely. May I ask if there is a method to map or mount the whole working environment from A to B please?

I have been assigned with a project to develop a 3D chart based on the data available in database of mySQL. The chart should be a drill chart which should give further more details of the area where we click on the chart.I tried for a long time to get some information regarding that.
