Jul 12, 2011Nautilus mounts NTFS partitions when I acces them, and before mounting, it asks for root password. Is there a method to auto-mount ntfs partitions on Debian startup, without requiring root password each time they are automatically mounted ? And without installing additional packages.

Jan 9, 2010I just installed kubuntu 9.10 and noticed that several partitions (fat32 and ntfs) are mounted automatically after I login. I searched /etc/fstab but found no entries for those partitions. So I guess there may be something like start-up scripts that automatically detect and mount all partitions on the hard disk at boot/login. Does anybody know the location of those scripts (if any)? I want to disable that auto mount.

Feb 21, 2010I have 9.10 and notice that when I look in Places none of my volumes/partitions are mounted - if I click on them I have to enter my user password to authenticate to gain access. My problem is that (with some help) I have set up rsync so it runs when I shut down my PC and backs up my Home folder from a partition on sda to a partition on sdb - this is great but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
I have done some tests and discovered that if I use my PC and never manually mount my backup sdb partition the rsync does not work (I also have GAdmin-rysnc so I can run manually backup but this also will not run if I do no mount the sdb volume). However, if I do mount the sdb backup partition and close down/restart then the backup works. What I need is my sdb backup partition to be automatically mounted every time I switch on - can this be done? I'm sure I had this working in 9.04 (auto mounting) but 9.10 seems not to like it.

Then Ubuntu just freezes. I am using Ubuntu Natty, if that helps. I am currently unable to get into Ubuntu without a LiveCD.

May 3, 2010Dropbox will not start properly because my Lucid installation is on a SS HD (/dev/sdc) but my data, including my Dropbox folder is on an internal NTFS-formatted HD (/dev/sda), and I also have another internal HD for backups (/dev/sdb).
For some reason I can get the backups HD to auto-mount on startup, but not the data HD. My fstab file looks like this:

Jan 18, 2011i have a question regarding how data is placed on a media, for example the daily used hdd: when we talk about storage we often speak in heads sectors and cylinders. my question is if heads, sectors and cylinder is the true way data exists on a hdd platter?
lets take for example, disk_x
1000.2gb = 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track 121601 cylinders.
fdisk -H 128 -S 32 /dev/disk_x each cylinder will be shrank to 2097152bytes, number of cylinders will grow to 476934. but everything will be much more aligned and readable or there is something i don't know and i will loose almost half of the total sector count on the hdd cause 63-32=31. i asked the partitioner just to use 32 sectors from each track and only 128 tracks of the cylinder.
or another example, if i have a cluster size of 4k. why not making each track use 56 sectors or 7 clusters. theoretically i have all files in my storage and each one of them occupies 14 clusters isn't it wiser to make it as described. what happens when i invoke fdisk -h -s params? what will be changed, the disc physically and the way it is accessed or only the partition table? you probably asking your self what the hell does this dude wants? i want to get maximum i/outputs and the widest bandwidth and the nicest readble partition tables and to understand better fdisk -H -S.

Hardware :: 3 SATA HDs Installed - Drive 2 Shows No Partitions In F12
May 2, 2010I have three sata drives installed in my machine. 1 is my boot drive, contains a windows install, and a linux install. All is well here. Drives 2 and 3 are simple fat32 volumes, I store my data on drive 2, and periodically sync it to drive 3. I do this simply for backup reasons. It was only recently that I setup this scheme. Previously I had all 3 drives in a fakeraid setup. Raid 5. I broke the array to set things up as I've described. All is well in windows, all 3 drives work as expected. However, in linux (fedora 12), drive 2 shows no partitions! If I do an fdisk -l, it shows sdb1, but if I attempt to mount it, I'm told that /dev/sdb1 does not exist, and in fact, /dev/sdb1 does NOT exist. sdc1 however, does exist, and is mountable.
A few things I've noticed with seem relevant.
Gnome reports a raid5 drive, which if I try to interact with it, fails.
Gparted shows sdb as a standard drive.
Dmesg shows the following, I've grepped out sdb and sdc for comparison, as they should be identical.

I did play around with mdraid while my array was apart, but I cant seem to find any method of testing sdb to see if something is somehow still configured on that drive. I've re-written the partition table, and even performed a low-level format on the drive, nothing seems to restore its function in linux.

Aug 24, 2010First of all: it's been more than 12 years ago since I worked with Linux, and a lot has changed in the meantime. But I considered it a challenge to install Ubuntu 9.10 and lateron upgraded to 10.04 LTS without any troubles, until now:
Except my main partition ("/") all other partitions fail to mount. All NTFS partitions from my other OS and also 2 other linux ext4 partitions I've made are not accessible anymore. and, what bothers me the most: I deleted those 2 new linux partitions in the meantime because I couldn't access them initially because Root was the owner (Duh! root is standard disabled in Ubuntu, right?). After an attempt to try to automount all partitions following the help guides I got now big grey errors on my splashscreen while booting, telling that an error occured with e.g. /media/Backup because it is missing or it cannot be mounted, with 3 options below: waiting, skipping or using a command prompt to solve this. I always choose Skip for safety.
Now if I want to see the content of all my other partitions I got a popup telling me unable to mount e.g. /media/Downloads and the message included:

Server :: Auto Mount USB Drive To Specified Mount Point After Reboot
Jul 19, 2010I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

Feb 10, 2010I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
