Nautilus mounts NTFS partitions when I acces them, and before mounting, it asks for root password. Is there a method to auto-mount ntfs partitions on Debian startup, without requiring root password each time they are automatically mounted ? And without installing additional packages.

Using: Debian Lenny. I want to mount 2 NTFS partitions in my /etc/fstab file, so that I needn't manually mount them when I want to use them. One of the partitions is the primary partition on the same hard disk as my Debian /, /home, and /swap partitions. The other is a 2nd internal hard disk.
a) Should I use ntfs-3g instead of ntfs as the /etc/fstab filesystem? I want to be able to read and write to the partitions as a user and not just as root.
b) I have read on the forum that "mounting NTFS partitions through fstab is not a great idea" - I thought that any dangers of doing so were ancient history. Why would it not be a good idea?
c) Which options should I use?
d) If I use 'user' instead of 'users' so that one specific user (me) can use the partitions, how do I specify which user name? (The man page is annoyingly unclear about this).
I have successfully mounted my Win7 volume and my external hard drives NTFS volume as well. However, after modifying the fstab I seem to only be getting the win7 volume to auto-mount. Below is the contents of my fstab. /dev/sdf3 is not mounting. Again, it works no problem if I manually mount it.

I just installed Debian 8.2 (Jessie). I couldn't find the way to mount the Windows 7 partition, at installation time.

I've recently installed Arch on my main PC, and I decided to use Xfce4 desktop environment as appose to gnome that I use on my laptop. Firstly, I had to search round for an icon theme to get any of the icons working (they were all just papers with red crosses in them to start with), which I think is taking lightweight a bit too far :P, but just my opinion.Now i've got that sorted I turned to the problem of auto-mounting partitions. I'm having some trouble getting HAL to auto-mount my NTFS partitions which have my documents and music on. They are NTFS because i've got dual boot windows, and had windows before Archlinux so NTFS was the logical fs type to use. I think HAL is auto mounting dvd's etc. (can't be sure as I aren't in Arch at the minute)I can mount the NTFS partitions manually using:mount -t ntfs /dev/sda(number from 1 through 3) /mnt/sda(1 through 3)
However, I can only access this via root, so I carried out: mchmod scott.scott /mnt/sda(1-3)or something similar and that works fine, so I know they can be mounted successfully. I've tried auto-mounting them using fstab but can't seem to get this working, and I would rather not have fstab auto-mount them, I would rather let HAL sort all that out for me.I have checked that dbus, hal, consolekit and xf86-input-evdev are all installed (although im not sure what xf86-input-evdev does).Has anyone got any ideas why its not auto-mounting the NTFS partitions. My laptop mounts the NTFS windows partition fine using gnome.
I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?
i reinstalled opensuse yesterday.when i turn on my system every time i need to enter my root password to mount my partitons.please see the following image.i want to automount all partitions on startup without giving root password(before reinstalling opensuse it didn't ask root password to mount my partitions)

View 6 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have a dual boot system it consists of Fedora 12 and Windows Vista, at this time when I am logged into fedora 12 I can select the windows vista partition in the f12 file manager, I am than prompted for the root password and after entering the password, the drive mounts as read/write with no problem. How can I automate this mounting process so once I login as a standard user the NTFS partition mounts without any input? I would like this to auto mount without prompting for a password or having to double click on the vista partition each time.

I first noted a few weeks ago I couldn't mount my NTFS partitions using dolphin. At the time I was having problems with windows, so I thought - naturally, they are marked as dirty, no biggie-
However, I still can't mount them and I know they are clean. I get the error: "filesystem is neither well know nor in /proc/filesystem nor in /etc/filesystems" which is strange since I can mount just fine in the console using mount -t ntfs-3g.

I have U1004 dual boot with MSW7 and sometimes want to mount those NTFS partitions for mostly reading operations. Ubuntu makes it easy by a single click in Nautilus. How to change this behavior and allow mount NTFS partitions with user's password only, like sudo behavior, for example? In addition, how to mount them read-only?
Note: I mount those NTFS partitions occasionally and there is nothing in fstab about it.
I just installed kubuntu 9.10 and noticed that several partitions (fat32 and ntfs) are mounted automatically after I login. I searched /etc/fstab but found no entries for those partitions. So I guess there may be something like start-up scripts that automatically detect and mount all partitions on the hard disk at boot/login. Does anybody know the location of those scripts (if any)? I want to disable that auto mount.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 and notice that when I look in Places none of my volumes/partitions are mounted - if I click on them I have to enter my user password to authenticate to gain access. My problem is that (with some help) I have set up rsync so it runs when I shut down my PC and backs up my Home folder from a partition on sda to a partition on sdb - this is great but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
I have done some tests and discovered that if I use my PC and never manually mount my backup sdb partition the rsync does not work (I also have GAdmin-rysnc so I can run manually backup but this also will not run if I do no mount the sdb volume). However, if I do mount the sdb backup partition and close down/restart then the backup works. What I need is my sdb backup partition to be automatically mounted every time I switch on - can this be done? I'm sure I had this working in 9.04 (auto mounting) but 9.10 seems not to like it.
I installed Fedora 13. I edited my fstab to automount my NTFS-3g drive. It worked. Then I updated to Kernel 2.6.34.6-54.fc13.x86_64 It doesn't work any more.

Have a 1TB external USB hard drive I want to use on both Windows and Linux (Mythbuntu 9.10), so I thought the easiest way would be to format it with NTFS. Installed the NTFS-3G package and I'm able to read and write to the drive fine from Linux, however I have a few questions;
1) How do I configure Linux so that when it mounts the NTFS partition it is writeable for user, group and other (bascially I want everyone to have read and write access)? Currently when the NTFS disk is mounted the permissions are restricted to the user only and I suspect I'll need to edit fstab for this, but don't have much experience here so need help with the specifics.
2) If my Linux PC is turned on with the external drive attached, the disk is not mounted until I double click on the icon on the desktop. Is there anyway I can configure Linux so that it will automatically mount the external disk when booting?

I have a windows partition on my drive, and I want to access it without having to mount it first, etc. There are just two partitions, windows and Ubuntu. I am running Ubuntu 10.04.1 so I want to mount it on startup. I saw this article: [URL] but I don't know if what it describes will work as it's almost 2 years old. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot setup with a fair amount of files in my windows volume. I noticed that the Ubuntu 10.4 GNOME version (at least) does not auto mount my NTFS drive. Of course as I have seen from various post this gets annoying when opening up a program that loads previous files before I for ex, click the '110GB FileSystem' icon from Nautilus or similar...that seems to mount it for me then... I want my 110GB NTFS volume to mount automatically so I dont have to do this process everytime I reboot.
I found a post on the forum (the latest one I could find) below that recommends installing ntfs-config. The post is from May 2008 but mentions 10.10 (via edits) so I'm confused and wondering if there is an easier/default way..or this is still the way to go? After several screw ups editing system files manually, Im very cautious about doing it in this case because its a work computer and frankly the uninsttall or editing the fstab manually worries me.
I used to be able to mount my external hard drive's ntfs partition by simply clicking on it, but now I can't anymore... I know that the last time I've used it with windoze, I had to force shut the **** thing down 'cause it was frozen real good (pretty unusual right !?!).The thing is, with ubuntu it sees it and mounts it no problem.
