Debian :: How Do Security Update Sources Work?

Mar 22, 2011

Just leads to a list of packages. Are these taken down and installed if needed? I take it these are installed from main component right? Is this just to let people know there's a new version in main? If you didn't have "deb http://security.debian.org/ distrib/updates main", wouldn't the updates be pulled from "deb http://whatever/debian distrib main" anyway when you did an apt-get update (by logical reasoning that they'd be new?)

Or is it that you can't detect new versions directly from main and you need the updates package to point out which ones have updated versions?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Update Http://ppa.launchpad.net Natty/main/Sources Sources

May 16, 2011

I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:

- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Update Sources Update Manager / Enable This?

Jan 5, 2010

Some reason i can't update my sources no matter how many servers i try to update it from it does not work i tryed alot of things like update manager and synaptic package manager and terminal to update but nothing is not working

Could not download all repository indexes
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

i can get on the internet fine but the update manager has not worked for 12 days code...

Debian :: Apt Security Update Failed

Apr 24, 2011

I don't know why but my server is no longer successfully updating its security repositories when I run 'apt-get update' on my system. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.Did I mess something up? No changes have been made to the server and I ran 'apt-get clean' and that didn't really do much.

Debian Configuration :: 4.2.2 Security Update Of Kernel

Sep 9, 2015

From the securing-debian-howto [URL] ...

"4.2.2 Security update of the kernel

First, make sure your kernel is being managed through the packaging system."

which suggests...

Code: Select all$ dpkg -S ‘readlink -f /vmlinuz‘

When I try to confirm by running the above, I get a lot of characters of output but the last line reads...

Code: Select alldpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /vmlinuz‘

How do I make sure my kernel is being managed through a packaging system?

Debian :: Security Update 'broke' Kernel / Recompile It?

May 25, 2011

I installed the latest security update for squeeze. It entailed an update of the kernel. Now when it boots, it give continuous kernel error messages about "can't enumerate usb .... " I have a custom kernel compiled from source (not sure about the patch level) from the same kernel 2.6.32. It seems to work OK. Should I worry about the security of this custom kernel or should I try to recompile it? I don't really know how to do any patching of the kernel source.

Security :: Suspicious Requests In Haproxy Log From Multiple Sources To The Same Target - Block?

Apr 12, 2011

I have suspicious requests in my haproxy logs from multiple sources to the same target. I could deny them in /etc/hosts.deny, but there are too many to keep track of. Is there a way to deny all requests to a specific target either in haproxy or through iptables?

Here's an example of the request: Apr 12 15:11:37 127.0.0.1 haproxy[28672]: 41.105.42.150:27072 [12/Apr/2011:15:11:37.315] web_servers frontend_farm/######## 3/0/1/1/169 404 1073 - - --NI 3/3/2/1/0 0/0 "GET /images/comment_icon.gif HTTP/1.1"

I've commented out my amazon instance id for security purposes. The request is for comment_icon.gif which does not exist. All requests go to that. The source IPs are from different countries as well. Blocking a certain country won't work either. Basically, if there was a way to send all requests for comment_icon.gif to /dev/null or something it would work.

Debian :: Awn Applets Do Not Work After Recent Update

Aug 19, 2011

I have been dsitro skipping around. Reinstalling the new versions every six months, only to find more major drawbacks recently with ubuntu. I fixed a major problem with adobe flash being majorly slow on my hardware by following the debian flash guide, what a life saver. I now love my linux system, flash was always a pain, made me appreciate windows. I thought I might try a rolling release distro (PCLinuxos is pretty good but I couldn't install office in wine). I heard about the speed of debian - the mother of all distros. But when I tried debian stable, I had hard crashes so I decided to try Wheezy instead.

Now I seem to be sitting pretty. With one exception, the latest 0.41 update of the AWN window manager breaks the awn applets. I have locked the version at 0.4 by going back to the stable branch that worked. But I would rather not have to check to see if the next updates is going to break them again. There were some more updates recently to awn-applets not sure if they fixed this problem. Why was this update released in the first place, when it breaks down awn almost completely ? without the applets it's almost useless. It's probably something simple like changing the directory but still annoying.

Ubuntu Installation :: Change The Sources That Aren't In Sources.list?

Apr 21, 2010

I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but

1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.

2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.

My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
