Ubuntu :: Add The Skype Plugin To Pidgin Software
Mar 1, 2010
i have a partition, with windows 2000 on one side and ubuntu 8.10 on the other. I installed the ubuntu a year ago but only started using a few days ago. I am currently busy transfering all of my activities from Windows to Ubuntu. This transfer involved, among other things, an attempt to add the skype plugin to my pidgin software on ubuntu. Here are the instructions I followed (from the site Ubuntu Geek) :
[Code]...
After installing the plugin I opened pidgin but was unable to do anything with it. I later understood the reason -- namely, that a condition for this plugin to work was that skype had to be installed and running on my system. So i installed skype (but only after having added the plugin).
In any case, now my pidgin will not start. When I try to start the program, the little pidgin window flashes briefly on the screen and then disappears. Having absolutely no experience with linux systems I don't even know where to start looking for the problem. I thought of uninstalling and reinstalling pidgin, but I get a warning that this program shares vital components with other programs, so I dare not...

I have Ubuntu 9.04. I've installed Skype on it, and I have pidgin 2.5.5. I downloaded and installed the skype4pidgin plugin, and I've restarted Pidgin, I've restarted Skype, I've restarted the entire computer, and still Skype is not appearing in the available Accounts Type list when I go to add a new account.

I've got Pidgin 2.4.1 on my Hardy computer, and I got the 'Off The Record' plugin working with no problems: I went to Tools > Plugins, found 'Off The Record' in the list of plugins and checked the box - and now OTR works. On my Jaunty machine I've got Pidgin 2.5.5 installed - and I can't find the OTR plugin! I go to Tools > Plugins and look through the list, but OTR isn't there!

I have installed Pidgin and the Facebook Plugin. However is there a bug with it? Because when I try to connect it says it can't retrieve my buddy list. On Fedora 12 this works with Pidgin problems. Is this a bug and is there a work around?

I'm trying to add a plugin to Pidgin, but I'm not really shure how to do it... I downloaded the binairy as a shared dll (.so) and copied it to the pidgin root folder (/usr/lib/pidgin/)... I was kinda hoping that would be sufficient, but (after restarting Pidgin) I still don't see the new plugin in the plugins-list. What am I doing wrong, or what should I do next?

I am using the Skype-Pidgin integration on Lucid. Calls work fine and I can send messages from Pidgin. But incoming messages don't get through to Pidgin -- instead I get an alert from Skype and I have to open up the Skype conversation window to see them.
The versions I have installed are:
pidgin : 1:2.6.6-1ubuntu4.3
pidgin-skype: 20100121+dfsg-1
skype: 2.2.0.25-1lucid1

I have been an OpenSuse 11.2 user since the past 8 months. Recently I had a issue with the operating system and therefore had to re-install the OS again. However, since the fresh install, I have not been able to capture any sound from my laptop's microphone. This is weird because it used to work fine with OpenSuse 11.2 before I had to re-install the same OS again. Additionally I can assure that there are no issues with the hardware since it works fine with Windows 7. I have tried almost everything, but in vain.

I have installed flash-plugin from rpmforge, video on flash sites works, but audio doesn't. Similarly neither the audio or mic works in skype. The soundcard is definitely recognised and I can change the levels using alsamixer. Furthermore, sound works in mplayer. Using CentOS 5.3 64bit fully up todate with rpmforge and adobe repositories enabled.

I have a Kubuntu 10.10 install on which I can't update my packages due to some fail conflict between pidgin and pidgin-facebookchat. I can't even remove the stuff via apt-get due to this conflict...
sudo apt-get remove pidgin
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

Previously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.

While using Rhythmbox this morning, I was greeted by a blunt and undiscriptive error message:
Code:
Plugin Error:Unable to activate plugin Cover Art.Going to the plugin page, I was supprised to find that most of the installed plugins would not load. Without any info being offered in the player, I looked on line. Many people had problems with other plugins, and most of the time it was a problem with an uninstalled python package. But I checked on this site and I found that I had all of these packages installed. (Well, the python ones at least, to check all of them would take forever.)
Code:
[URL]
After finding no help there, I ran rhythmbox -d to debug:
Code:
(12:04:33) [0x934fe68] [rb_python_module_init] rb-python-module.c:406: Init of python module
(rhythmbox:4971): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: unable to load module as python runtime could not be initialized

I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?
