Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Public Key Not Available For Updates
Jul 22, 2010I'm completely new to Ubuntu, I've just installed 10.04 and this is only the second week I've had it, and I'm not sure what is going on with this. Whenever I try to check for updates I get this message: The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Jul 17, 2011how safe is it to run Ubuntu updates when I'm connecting via a public network (wireless or wired) from a hotel (or other public settings). I'm not familiar with the internals but is there an additional validation mechanism for the package servers other than the URL ?

Jan 20, 2011I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my sister's HPtx2000 since she isn't going to use it anymore and it worked better than I expect. The touchscreen works without any additional driver tweaking and installation <3, the wireless works fine, the sound works. I listed those because when i was installing, I was looking around at other people that did this and those were the problems they had (but those was of an old OS).
Well anyways, what I want to ask is about the stuff that doesn't work and the stuff I want to do: The buttons that flip the screen and etc doesn't work. Is there a way to map them and flip the orientation of the screen? And the other buttons too, like the media button. Is there a way to map them to open VLC or something? Does anyone know any tablet programs for Ubuntu? E.g a simple text program that can convert stuff written to neat, typed font? A way to write text into a google search bar using the stylus? And while we're on this, is there a way to map a left click on the touch screen?
In Windows, the left click could be mapped to: a). a side button of the pen, b) the top button of the pen, and c) holding the pen down onto the touchscreen. how to use Samba to access a public folder of a Windows computer? And to access the printer connect to the Windows computer? Some of the tutorials I found were only for folders and printers on the Ubuntu computer.

Feb 12, 2011I, like many people, don't have access to fast internet at home (only 56k). That makes downloading the hundreds of mb of data impossible. But, like pretty much all of those same people, I do have access to local libraries. So, I would like to know the best way to download updates at a library, then come back and install them with ubuntu.The version is 10.04 32-bit, and is 100% stock (just installed from CD), and I want to bring it up-to-date.

The only thing is that i'd like to be able to use openssl public and private keys so only a host with the public key could access/decrypt the filesharing. I've gotten these libraries (httplib, basehttpserver, ssl, os) to work using just a pem file containing both the public and private keys but no success with them seperately. Can someone point me in the right direction or offer an alternative? PS, the goal of the project is to create an anonymous, decentralized, secure file sharing program. May 2, 2011I have no idea what is happening but I started getting a problem after some updates and then I decided to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 to see if this fixed the problem, then I just did a clean install last night and I'm still having problems. I'm always asleep when it happen or not around so I'm not sure what is happening right before this screen, but I can say I usually will only have VLC open (at this point I'm sure it stopped playing videos) and maybe Transmission in the background, nothing else. The computer won't respond to the Ctr+Alt+B+PrtScn or to the power button, or to Crt+Alt+F2 or the like, seems completely frozen...

I know with windows you can add the 2>&1 to capture error data. Is there such a thing for Linux?

Apr 1, 2010I recently updated my software (on Fedora 13) and after the updates had finished installing, it said that the computer required a restart. I noticed that I could no longer type anything into the search bar on Firefox without an error message appearing. So I thought it best to restart the computer then. When restarting, the loading screens took much longer than usual. The guitar pick shape that fills with white was stalling around the top. (I know, I love my complete comprehension of the problem too.) I pressed escape, and was given this message on a black screen.

This is as far as I can get. I press Esc again, and I see the completed fedora logo, but nothing else happens. I press Esc again, and I come back to the previous screen, and this time there are two of the above messages. My computer is fairly old (four years), so I understand if the hard drive is deteriorating. I would like to have use of my computer back, but at the very least I would like to recover some files that I have not backed up.
General :: Computer Crashed After Updates - Multiple Flavors Of Installed ?
Jan 6, 2010Trying to help brother whose computer quit working after he downloaded updates. Don't know Linux lingo but it looks to me like he has multiple flavors of Linux running: Gnome, ubuntu, xbuntu, kbuntu - probably more I've forgotten.
He knew nothing about computers at all and inherited a build-it-yourself computer kit that someone was throwing away. It came with a CD of Linux software. By trial and error he made it run and has managed to do some amazing things with photos and graphic design. But he downloads and launches EVERYTHING that suggests itself to him. Sometimes a thousand files at a time.
Now his machine boots but won't run any apps. It keeps giving him a message that he needs to "manually run" some "dpkg-something" but he doesn't know how to get to any sort of root or command prompt where he can enter a manual command. All he knows how to do is click icons. He's clicked them all. Now his computer is continually running screen after screen of programming language.
Is there any hope? Can we reinstall an OS without losing all of his files of graphics work? Which OS should he use on a fairly old and slow machine if his main (only?) use is graphic design?

Ubuntu Installation :: Ubuntu Stuck At Computer Name Screen After Updates / Fix This?
Jan 28, 2011I am new to Ubuntu and I am running v10.10 through VMPlayer on Windows 7. I wanted to run the updates through the Update Manager. After downloading them and installing them, my VM rebooted and has not worked properly ever since.
When it boots now I get a screen which has my computer name "jason-virtual-machine" and its just frozen there. I tried the "recovery mode" but that does not boot up either.
What happened and what can I do to fix this?

Mar 24, 2011For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Dec 20, 2010I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

Jan 29, 2011There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Mar 25, 2011So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

May 28, 2011I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.

Jun 30, 2010so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
